Does anybody have more info on the progress/upgrade/new Ahmedabad airport.
The report below says "new international terminal is already on it's way". Last month I could not see any signs of it.
Further "new domestic terminal, modeled on Singapore's Changi Airport, is in its last stages". If this is modelled after Changi, I shudder to think what Changi might be like. I admit the new departure terminal is a bit more spacious, but it's nothing to write home about (of course, it's good compared to old terminal). They had things in place for extensions to fit Jetways , so the a/cs can come all the way to terminal, but the rumor has it that PP nixed it all. What an ***. So the 2nd floor of the departure terminal is completely empty. My understanding it that only things left out there were the jetways. Of course, there's nothing out there after you cross the security.
Also at least the old dump had a viewing lounge on the 2nd floor. None here AFAIK.
The other rumor I heard that there are plans to build a new airport in the western outskirts of the city (Sanand) which will be still 20kms away for the outskirts itself. Any info?
http://www.ndtvprofit.com/homepage/storybusinessnew.asp?template=&whichstory=n&id=35057 The Airports Authority is also gearing up to take the additional traffic. A new international terminal is already on its way and a new domestic terminal, modeled on Singapore's Changi Airport, is in its last stages. New hangars are also coming up which will solve the problem of night parking.
"We are now getting fully equipped with necessary infrastructure to accommodate more and more aircrafts and airlines coming here to operate. We are even adding new facilities to house airlines operating overseas," said S D Awasthi, Director, Sardar Vallabhbhai International Airport.
The civil aviation ministry has also chipped in by giving an extra Rs 500 crore to upgrade the Ahmedabad airport. And with private airlines adding flights aggressively passengers are likely to gain even more as the competition leads to price wars.
