Indian navy set to issue maritime reconnaissance aircraft shortlist within days
The Indian navy is poised to announce the shortlist for its maritime reconnaissance aircraft contest "any day now", says Boeing, which is offering a P-8I variant of its 737-based P-8A Multi-mission Maritime Aircraft now in development for the US Navy.
Other types in contention for the eight-aircraft programme include a special mission version of the Airbus A319/A320 from EADS, a package based on Dassault's Falcon 900 business jet also backed by Israel Aerospace Industries, an improved version of the Ilyushin Il-38 and a refurbished P-3 Orion promoted by Lockheed Martin.
I think it is time we get over the Russian centric approach. Agreed that it is rather hard to do that with regards to fighter aircraft, but maritime reconnaissance aircraft is a good point to start. Personally, I'd prefer to see Indian Navy acquire jet and not something like Orion, but not quite sure how much it matters to have a jet when it comes to operations?
BTW!! What happened to Russian stuff we had? Was it leased? Are they still in service?
The A319/320 IMO would be a better option... But even the Boeing would be a nicer idea than the P-3 Orion... i feel the tech is old... just my twocents
