Druk Air in India
Permalink Closed

Coming into DEL yesterday was quite a bit interested to see a A5 bird standing in the domestic side of the terminal. I knew that IC was in talks for sometime to get the Druk Air birds on a wet-lease, so I guess that deal has finally come through.

Now the other part, that bird represents 50% of the Druk Air fleet, so what is happening to their services out of Bhutan? Are they managing with just one bird? or do they have more birds planned for delivery soon.

Anyone who can throw light on this?

Druk Air's A319s were with IA for a while but have gone back after IA got 2 ex-Air Canada A319s (VT-SCD, VT-SCE). IA has also got its first, own and new A319 (VT-SCF) (of the 43-jet Airbus deal), which also happens to be the only Airbus (out of this package) not to have the new hi-tech IFE. (IA wanted it this way).

Druk uses to A319s to get to the Far East (through India) at times. But they do seem to manage with these planes off and on their schedule.

Druk is on UN assistance, so as part of the civil aviation prog. for that country, funds were arranged to buy just about 2 aircraft.

Interesting, I knew a capt. jigme wangchuk who was also the prince or the son of someone very powerful in Bhutan, and he said that Bhutan only had 4 pilots (but that was way back) or something like that. Well now i guess they only have 2 pilots Would love to fly with these guys.

Over a period of time, I've realized how closeted it was flying in India, flying with multi-racial, multi-national pilots is one of the most envigoring experiences one can have. Considering the pilot shortage now, i guess there is enough international pilot exposure that people should be getting now.

PS: How do i change my name to "Boeing 7xx"?

Sorry if I sound negative, but how many flights does Druk Air need?  Don't you think one flight out of CCU would be sufficient, and that also with uncertain loads.  I'd presume most of those traveling to Thimpu would be vacationers and would rather take the land route than fly.  In think in that case it'd make more sense to lease it out one to IC and generate stready revenue.  Again, this is my educated guess and realities might be different.

Let me know when you'd want to do the change.  Once done, you'd have to login by new Username.

Not bad, he used to fly around the same time as Rajiv Gandhi, Sanjay Sharma, etc with IC pilots.

Wonder if he's in India flying the Druk Air bird.
