Mumbai-Delhi among world’s busiest air routes

Mumbai:: In yet another first for Indian aviation, a domestic air route is now among the world’s busiest. The Mumbai-Delhi route has clawed its way to the No.7 slot among the world’s busiest routes, according to 2006 findings by OAG, a travel and transport information company. The survey was based on the number of flights operating per week. OAG collates data from more than 1000 airlines, on a daily basis, and tracks around 28 million departures a year.

“It’s interesting to note there is very little movement year on year among the overall top 10 busiest routes, with Mumbai-Delhi the only ‘new entry’,” says Duncan Alexander, managing director of Business Development at OAG.

The entry of Mumbai-Delhi ousts Los Angeles-San Diego, which was ranked tenth last year. Currently dubbed the ``bread and butter corridor’’ for domestic airlines, 11 per cent of total seats per week are offered on the Mumbai-Delhi sector. And the numbers don't seem to be letting up. With over 600 flights per week, the total traffic between the national and financial capital contributes over 50 per cent of the total Indian air traffic. Flights between the two metros enjoy load factors between 75-80 per cent through the year.

The figures only take into consideration traffic between airport pairs. If city pairs are considered, a lot of US city pairs would have been included.

For example: Flights between New York and Chicago would be operating to and from multiple airports in each city. ORD and MDW in Chicago and EWR, JFK and LGA in New York.

Obvious im talking abt general pax travel.

And as far as fares are concerned its natural that u woun't be getting an Air Deccan Re1 or an indian Airlines 'Check-Fare' ticket. You have to pay the full fare but atleast you can get a seat even an hour before the flight
