Ministry of External Affairs says:

The job of the consulates, missions and embassies of India is under clause 9:

Processing applications received for providing free air tickets by Air India/Indian Airlines for transportation of dead bodies of destitute/stranded/absconded Indian nationals as also for arranging tickets for the escorts. Issuing a recommendatory letter to Airlines for free tickets in such cases. Also issuing letter to the concerned Customs Authorities in India seeking help in clearing the personal belongings of the deceased Indian nationals through customs in India.

                                                                ****

The airline code is:

At least 48 hours before arrival of the shipment, a preadvice message must be sent to the
consignee by telex or fax. This must include the following information:
Preadvice Message:
place of departure
place of arrival
number of boxes
flight arrival details (flight number/date/time)
Avoid arrival of goods on weekends (Sat/Sun or Thu/Fri according to destination)
airway bill (AWB) number
recommended storage temperature.
To facilitate customs formalities on departure and arrival, a proforma invoice/packing list is
necessary and must include:
Proforma Invoice/Packing List:
consignee's address
number of cartons
details of contents
gross weight (optional)
value (for customs reasons, enter a symbolic value even for medical samples)
identifying marks

An Airway bill made out by or on behalf of the shipper determines the contract for the carriage  over the routes of the carrier. It must show the text: “In Compliance with Airline Packing Instruction 650.”

It is usually completed by the airline representative or the forwarding agent.
The name and telephone number of the person responsible for the shipment must be marked
durably and legibly on the outside of the package. One copy of specimen data forms, letters,
and other identification material must be attached to the outside of container.

But why this thread? How morbid!

What i learnt in the past two hours:

A dead human body when being transported by air is called HUMAN REMAINS

There is an NOC which needs to be procured by the relative who is travelling with the body or the ones who are on ground from the AIRPORT POLICE.

On obtaining the NOC one needs to then go to the AIRLINE CARGO OFFICE and submit the NOC and claim the body.
