I can't help to be surprised but yes, a new start up airline is planning to start up in Bangladesh.

They are looking for DASH-8-300 and ATR 42/72 for their operations.

Their website is www.unitedairwaysbd.com and their punch line is FLY YOUR OWN AIRLINE.

Anybody has more details

Biman Bangladesh Airlines.
GMG Airlines.
Air Prabhat.
Aero Bengal.

Aero Bengal. ( If you did not know they were the first in 1995 to fly as private airlines in Bangladesh).
Air Prabhat.

Airlines facing liquidation:
Biman Bangladesh Airlines. (They discontinued some services because they were not viable) JFK routes.

From my limited contacts in Bangladesh, it appears that GMG is doing well and is considered to be much more efficient than Biman.
Incidentally there used to be a time when Indian passengers used Biman as an alternative to AI. In the early 90s, Bengalis living in New York area used to take the Biman flight to Dhaka and then their connecting flight to Calcutta. I suppose Calcutta wasn't connected well to NYC in those days.
