This long delay is not helping either *A or AI/IC. On the other hand, given that neither Skyteam nor one world are making any progress, at least we should be glad that *A is trying something.
I am just waiting for the day this happens. I am a member of Flying Returns and am slowly but steadily accumulating mileage on Air India
Would give us an awesome choice for flights out of India.
These are the Star Alliance airlines, operating out of BOM.
Singapore Airlines, Thai, Lufthansa, Austrian, South African Airways, bmi, Swiss.
Someone please list *A airlines for DEL, MAA, BLR, etc.....Will be a handy resource to have for choosing an airline once AI is inducted into the alliance....

DELHI:-
Air Canada,Asiana,Austrian,Lufthansa,Singapore and Thai.
Dr. Haetty said his organisation was in favour of the merger of Indian and Air India and would welcome the combined entity to join the Star Alliance, a platform for 18 airlines from different continents.http://www.hindu.com/2006/10/20/stories/2006102001791400.htm
yes - so now HYD has the same combination as BLR in terms of *A carriers - coverage is still slightly thin - but I'm sure that will change soon.
All this increased service from secondary cities like BLR/HYD - I hope this has slightly opened up flights from the earlier hubs like BOM/MAA etc. Is that the case, or are loads even higher at those airports?
I got those figures from somewhere in skyscrapercity.com. This along wid other figures for other airports around the world is listed on another thread on ai.net(Passenger figures for Indian Airports or something. Along wid the link to that page in skyscrapercity.). I know skyscrapercity by itself is just a forum and not reliable, but the person who posted the figure there seemed to have an IATA or someother website link, although i dun think the link was public access.
Furthermore, there have been many articles in the Indian press where the figures I have mentioned were quoted including the 50% odd growth figure for DEL. And I think you will find plenty of links in Indian Aviation websites showing DEL load for prev year to be approx 11mn. 50% growth makes it approx 17mn. This supports the figure mentioned above as well.
Although, I cannot provide you with hard evidence to the figures mentioned I have every reason to believe that they may be reasonably accurate. And I am sure if anyone here has evidence to the contrary they will post it.
Cheers

NEW DELHI: The state-owned Maharaja Air India is getting into the big league in global aviation market. AI has reached an agreement to join Star Alliance, one of the leading groups of international airlines, as a part of its global expansion plans.
This would make AI the first Indian carrier to join a global alliance. Air India chairman V Thulasidas confirmed the move, but refused to divulge details.
"We are joining an international alliance. A non-disclosure agreement has been signed, and we would make a formal announcement on joining the alliance by December-end," Thulasidas said.
Meanwhile, sources pointed out that the airline is joining the Star Alliance, which includes Air Canada, Air New Zealand, ANA, Austrian, bmi, LOT, Lufthansa, Scandinavian Airlines, Singapore Airlines, Spanair, Thai Airways, United, US Airways and VARIG.
The agreement, sources said, is a recognition of the booming Indian air travel market and the improved service standards of Indian carriers.
NEW DELHI: State-owned carrier Air India is set to join Star Alliance, one of the leading groups of international airlines, as a part of its global expansion plans. "We would be making a formal announcement on joining an international alliance in December," Air India CMD V Thulasidas told reporters here. Although he declined to name the alliance, sources said AI was on course to join the Star Alliance and a non-disclosure agreement has been signed. Thulasidas said the decision to join an alliance was taken before the proposal to merge of AI and Indian was mooted. He said joining the international alliance would help the carrier increase its load factor by 5-6 per cent. "It would also help us in getting a much wider coverage across the world through member airlines of the alliance," he added. Air India had been conducting due diligence to join an international alliance in order to strengthen its global position. Currently there are three major alliances in the world--Oneworld, SkyTeam and Star. Star Alliance has Lufthansa, Singapore Airlines, Air Canada and United Airlines among others as its members. He said, while Air India would be joining the alliance on its own, post-merger the new entity would become member of the alliance. Commenting on the merger of the two state-owned carriers, Thulasidas said the eGoM was likely to take a formal decision at its meeting to be held later this week. He also ruled out any retrenchment or downsizing of staff as a result of the merger.
Good show AI. There is still a lot of hope for you!! Good Luck!!
Star Alliance has Lufthansa, Singapore Airlines, Air Canada and United Airlines among others as its members. Coming to think of it, AI and IA have benefitted already much before this!!! AI with ex-SQ and now UAL's 747-400s (to arrive soon) and 777s in its fleet, while IA has ex-Air Canada A319s!!!

now I know why KE's (Skyteam) B747 were returned back.
On the serious note! it is indeed a good news and coincides well with the arrival of AI's new birds, and pending merger with IC.
Any idea about the fate of AIX? I mean whether it will join the alliance or not. Not sure but some of the east European regional carriers are already members.
Where does this leave 9W with? Are they going Skyteam way!
Anyway, its time we start speculating AI's new route in context of the Star Alliance membership.

Aseem,
Delivery schedule. Not coounting the 737s.
777-200LR 2007 Feb, Mar, Apr = 3 2008 Jan, Feb = 2 2009 Apr, May, Jun = 3 Total: 8
777-300ER 2007 Jun, Jul, Aug = 3 2008 Apr, May = 2 2009 Apr, May, Jun, Jul = 4 2010 Apr, May, Jul, Nov = 4 2011 May, Aug = 2 Total: 15
787-8 2008 Sep, Oct, Nov, Dec = 4 2009 Jan, Mar (2), May, Aug, Oct (2), Dec (3) = 10 2010 Jan, Feb, Mar, Oct, Nov, Dec = 6 2011 Aug (2),Sep (2),Oct = 5 2012 Jan, Feb = 2 Total: 27 G. Total= 50
If you look at the delivery schedule of AI's new fleet, AI is still handicapped till about the middle of 2008. Its only when the 787s start to arrive that AI can be a little confident.
See how. Till end of 2007, it will be an addition of just 6 new 777s (3LRs and 3 ERs). Add to this an existing old 747-400 fleet (of this, what remains useful is 6 of AI's own with revamped IFE), about 16 antique A310s and nearly 12 new 737s. AI may add to this about 5 more worn out 747s.
If the merger with IA is in shape by then, you can add a huge medium range fleet of about 75+ aircraft of the A320 family, Bombardier/Embraer, Dornier, ATR The new long range additions will be IA's 2 A330s which will join IA by the end of 2007 (June and Oct-Nov).
So in effect, AI/IA, or whatever the new entity is, till about early 2008, will be a LARGE medium range airline --- where about 27+ long range jets (not so reliable 747s, 777s) are fed by a battalion of RELIABLE medium/small range jets (A319, A320, A321, 737, ATR, Bombardier/Embraer, Dornier). (IA, as on Nov. 24, 2006, is already 77 planes strong, making it India's largest airline, fleet-wise.) Don;t forget to add to this confusion, AI's own squadron of UNRELIABLE A310s.
May be this is where the Star Alliance connection might help, though the process to become a full-fledged Alliance member and then benefit from it takes about 14 months (accd to Thulasi).
Hope AI starts expanding, upgrading and refurbishing its airport lounges to fit into the Star Alliance image and also be prepared for an influx of guests from other Star Alliance airlines!
I'm sure they'll have a huge list of things to take care of, and lounges will be just one small (but important) part of the list of steps AI/IC will have to take. And yes, the demand on the domestic lounges will increase manifold, but then so will the occupancy on IC's domestic flights. I'm sure pretty much all *A Gold members today fly 9W (due to the superior service standards), but will switch to flying IC on domestic sectors due to the affinity to *A. For the small investment in lounges (comparatively), IC can increase it's loads from high fare paying customers.
