A very very upset Sahara 301
Permalink Closed

Came in over delhi today and was in the queue for landing, heard a very interesting conversation between Sahara 301 and the ATC who had kept Sahara 301 holding for adams and then asked them to increase speed and refused to let them descend. A visibly upset commander on the Sahara 301 let out a verbal lashing to the ATC including a "you ask us to increase speed when we've dropped flaps, we are at 2100ft now you are not letting us descend can you please respond or shall we take alternate" "Standby Sahara 301" "ENOUGH standing by by Sahara 301 advise alternate".

We had to switch frequencies so don't know what happened after that.

I think it's high time to privatise the ATC as well - and get some new investment/technology to help ease the congestion.

Delhi's getting crowded... Nonetheless. I hear from informed people that Tony (Air Asia) is in Delhi to start Air Asia operations to India. Could be the death knell for a 9w and S2 overpriced, underserviced ops to ASEAN.

*** It would be interesting to know the load factors on 9W and S2 on their Far East flights. With Asian carriers like MH and SQ slashing fares (e.g. a BOM-KUL return ticket on MH was available at INR 12500 on weekdays and INR 14000 on weekends), most of the price conscious Indians would like to fly them instead of the desi pvt carriers.

Also, the novelty of flying an international airline as opposed to the usual Jet/Sahara is another (although a smaller) factor.

Of course, aviation enthusiasts like me would always choose to fly on a widebody operated by MH/SQ, etc rather than those piddly little 737s that 9W and S2 operate!!

I've hardly been in the far-east now for 3weeks, but i can tell you i've seen every single Air Asia flight turn around in 20minutes FLAT. Fuel, Passengers, Cargo and Baggage.... IN AND OUT ... in twenty minutes. Their push back sometimes reminds me of the desi taxi driver from patiala who can back up as fast as he can move forward.

With such efficiency, and service i doubt that they have trouble meeting those $2.50 fares they offer. Besides i believe that their a/c to pilot ratio is around 1:6 which means that you fly every day a little under 8hours, which is fantastic pilot utilization, especially for the right siders who can hit the min hours really quick.

PS : I don't fly for AK but whatever I've seen about them is bloody impressive!
