Thank you God.

My first question:

Why do they deice the plane on arrival in most western countries. What is the objective behind the same. What kind of efficiency in terms of % can be achieved/is achieved by the same.

this is something that even I can answer.  Well!! If there is ice on the wings, then the flaps won't work during take off, and you'll have disaster for sure.  Do you remember the days of non-frostfree fridge, where you used to have a tray below the freezer.  It used to have a flap too, and when water used to freeze in it, its flap would be stuck.  Pretty much the same thing over here.

As Aseem pointed out.....De-Icing is the Removal of Ice from the Aircraft surface after it forms. The Rotor blades can freeze & the Aerodynamic contour can be affected on the Leading Edges.Control surfaces can get jammed.Lift is affected.

During Flight most Aircraft use Anti Ice [Prevention of Ice Formation] for Wing Leading Edges & Engine Cowl.

I would not know the percentage of Efficiency achieved theoritically though.

Believe me Im glad We dont have Icing problems to that extend out here. Its not easy to work in Mx.

Does Icing happen to a/c which are on ground and then wanting to take off, or does it happen to a/c which have landed too.

Often i have noticed that while deicing, water is sprayed on the body of the a/c as well.....why?

If the OAT is condusive to Icing, below 0degC or approx 35degF.Not a problem in most places in India though.

In Air its more likely due OAT & Moisture.

The Spray solution is not Water, but DeIcing Fluid.Rated in types depending on the Warming time. Its hot & keeps the Surfaces warm.

The Crew make a decision on what type fluid needed depending on the Time left prior to chocks off.

sometimes manually with a long mop and soap water/cleaning liquid certified for use on aircraft with a guy propped up on a platform... other ways include airlines who have their own aircraft cleaning platforms that clean most of the hull automatically... kinda like giant carwash rotary discs

Out here its done manually. With 10-12 folks using Trestles & Mops of various sizes with the Water Spray bottles & soap solutions.

Remember Dust on an Aircraft is never blown away & can add to weight in long run.
