This seems to vary from 500 to 800 rupees on the various airlines, and is often shown as "tax" when pricing and under different heads while ticketing. One explanation was that the price of aviation fuel was rising.
Now with crude oil dropping to record lows, one would have thought that aviation fuel prices would also drop and therefore the fuel surcharges/taxes.
Any input from commercial people here, please?

Though not an airline commercial person - I think the prices of Aviation fuel are kept artificially high by the 3 fuel companies. And they don't necessarily drop with the drop in intl prices.
There was a news article about the govt finally thinking of opening up the Aviation fuel business to new players - which should definitely see the prices of ATF softening in India.
