National flag carrier Air-India is all set to pick up stake in the proposed $100 million maintenance, repair and overhaul (MRO) facility of the US-based aircraft manufacturer Boeing Company in Nagpur.
Air-India's stake in the facility will be in the form of contribution of its engineering assets and infrastructure located at its base in Mumbai as well as its human resources.
The airline will hire an independent firm to value its engineering infrastructure and human resources to ascertain the proposed stake in the MRO project.
Sources said Air-India would pick up a substantial stake and be a major shareholder in the project next to Boeing. Boeing is also planning to induct a technological partner into the project.
A delegation from Boeing is expected this weekend to finalise the particulars of the Nagpur project.
When contacted, Air-India Company Secretary S Venkat declined to comment, adding, "Air-India has signed an agreement with Boeing, which gives the airline the first right to partner with the MRO project."

The MRO is part of the commitment Boeing gave to the Indian government when Air-India agreed to buy 68 aircraft from it for $11 billion as per the listed price.
"After picking up the stake, Boeing will also set up its simulators on land provided by Air-India and lend simulator slots to the airline on mutually agreed terms and conditions," sources said.
Venkat said the airline is incurring a cost of $3 million per aircraft for major maintenance and overhaul. part of the commitment Boeing gave to the Indian government when Air-India agreed to buy 68 aircraft from it for $11 billion as per the listed price.

Makes sound business as well as economic sense for Air India to do so.
They plan to have an overall Boeing fleet anyways.....so i guess its good for them to be in the resource pool to grow and yes gain a competitive advantage.

Incidentally, the MRO business this side of Asia will have very tough competition form Thailand. The Thai Government has indicated that the (old) Dom Muang airport (Swanrnabhoomi is now operational w.e.f today, Sept 15) will be turned into an exclusive MRO centre. Thai Govt will go all out to get Airbus, Boeing, Embrear and ATR to invest there. Thailand wants to make it the one-stop place for all technical solutions in Asia.

Boeing MRO unit to start functioning in Nagpur from next year
Nagpur, Sep 15 (UNI)
US-based Boeing Commercial Airlines’ Boeing Maintenance Repair and Overhaul (MRO) unit will start its functioning at the proposed Cargo Hub site near Nagpur Airport from next year. Boeing’s Senior Vice-President Dinesh Keskar today told mediapersons that he along with the officials of the Maharashtra Airport Development Company (MADC) surveyed the land required for MRO for which Rs 500 crore would be invested. ‘‘We require 70 to 100 acre of land and MADC has agreed for it. We prefer the land in the Special Economic Zone (SEZ) in the MIHAN poject,’’ he said. He said MRO base would be fully developed in three phases and its first phase would be completed within 8 to 12 months after the land is handed over to Beoing. The facility to repair three big and equal number of small size flights within the country at the initial stage would be made available, he said and added that the project would involve 99 per cent Indian employess. Mr Keskar also assured that aviation training centre would also be set up within two or three years to produce good pilots.
