No one would really have forecast just a year ago what thousands of citizens could have done a year ago.


Get passports, ration cards and other vital information without a bribe through the RTI.


With a sudden jump in the number of domestic flights, has safety become an issue and recently passengers on a Jet Airways flight found out that their flight aborted its landing just seconds before it was supposed to touch down.


The reason was another plane was there on the runway.


Now for the first time a passenger has filed an RTI application to know more about the incident.


Dilip Kumar, a Delhi-based management consultant, was shell-shocked when his flight 9W 830 on Chennai-Delhi route abruptly took off seconds before the touchdown at Delhi airport.


Kumar wanted to know why did this happen and just how far they were from disaster.


"They said they did not have the clearance and that's why he took off. My question to them then was: Why did he come so low as he did. Who's accountable for this?" asked Kumar, a Jet Airways passenger.


Kumar was not satisfied by the pilot's reply that the plane was just 220 feet from the runway, a height from which passengers could see the tarmac but since he did not get an ATC clearance, he took off again.


So, this frequent flier wrote to the Directorate General of Civil Aviation asking him why were the lives of so many passengers were put to risk.


Immediate action


When he didn't get a reply Kumar filed an application under the Right to Information Act.


"Subsequently I got a call from Jet Airways who told me their pilots were trained. An ATC also called he said there was another plane on the runway this shocked me. RTI is a powerful act and it is time bound," said Kumar.


Even other airlines are now a worried lot what if other passengers begin exercising their right to know.


"Look if a plane did a go around from 500 feet or 200 feet, it must because there must have been another plane on the runway. These things do happen not just in India even in other countries," said Jehangir Wadia, passenger.


Of course aborted landings or take offs do take place. But surely somebody must be held accountable for it after all it concerns the safety of passengers.


Well, this RTI application could go a long way not just in making passengers aware but also fixing responsibility.

well if the report says that he is a 'frequent flier' i dunt know why he reacted with such shock... if he has flown many times assuming he must hav been through a go-around.... agreed he just cares bout getting to his destination... why airlines seem to be bothered about RTI on the flying part of it i dunt know... every action or decition made by the pilots is justified... such go-arounds isnt something new... happens alot especially nowadays with the increase in air-traffic...

I think the article is more about RTI's application in field of aviation, and not about anything else.  The next time DN dumps you in spite of having a confirmed ticket, you can demand the same.

The guy should feel grateful to the ATC and pilot for saving him so that he could get to ask these questions which in the end get nowhere.

His knowledge in aviation is poor or else he could have had the common sense to understand that the a/c that landed before him took to long (than required) to get out of the runway. You need right to know if something happens and not to waste resources otherwise.

I feel that RTI is an important tool for asking the right kind of questions at the right kind of time.


It is imperative that we read and learn and contribute to the safety of aviation rather than throwing muck at each other and making each other feel little.


The fact that Aseem has started this www.airliners-india.net is to give a chance to our people to help aviation in our country grow.


So let AVIATION grow

it doesnt always have to be a plane or a runway incursion by a taxing aircraft.... often last minute go arounds are caused due to a dog darting across the runway and in some cases a small flock of birds... usually the white egrets that fly across open areas...


that doesnt mean the passengers lives were in danger.... though if the pilot continued... they surely would have been in danger then lol

This guy does not seem to be a frequent flyer. These kind of things happen all over the world and there is no risk involved in aborting a landing. It has happend with me a couple of times and I am not a very frequent flyer. Sometimes, the a/c ahead takes a longer time to clear the rwy.

Last time, I had a aborted landing was in a 9W flight from IXE to BOM. The flight ahead of us had a bird hit and took a longer time to vacate the rwy.

This guy seems to have a lot of free time with him. He should concentrate more on his consultancy business instead of wasting his time.

Well i am looking at the what the guy was thinking... yes this article is more about RTI's appliaction... but i think using it for such stupid things... he is jus trying to do Hero-giri! lol

Nice to hear about RTI working.However regarding the Pax complaining on the Go-Around.


Its better to Go-Around than to have an Accident/Incident.


The P1 is in the best position to take that desicion & it may not always be that there was another Aircraft on the Runway as the reason.

Yesterday 04sep'06, at Palam/delhi domestic, about 1415hrs, from onboard VT-INA, saw a dog on the taxi-way blocking a right turn after start by barking at the aircraft and not moving aside. After some time the dog turned away and then started barking at VT-GAA. VT-INA then rolled. I don't know about VT-GAA after that.

Everynight at BOM.We at Mx wonder when the next Dog hit would occur on the Taxitrack.Somehow People in charge are too busy relaxing at nights.

Maybe you could take a closer look at VT-GAA when it is in BOM next? (VT-INA will not be in BOM for some time, yet, I think . . . )
