Lufthansa considering purchase of 100 planes Web posted at: 9/3/2006 2:2:53 Source ::: AFP
BERLIN • Germany's biggest airline Lufthansa is considering a multi-billion-euro purchase of some 100 new planes to replace part of its aging fleet, the newspaper Welt am Sonntag reported.
“A rather large order” for aircraft will be made in the autumn, the airline's chief pilot, Juergen Raps, said in an internal publication Flightcrew Info.
The first decisions could be made during a meeting of the supervisory board on September 20.
According to the newspaper, Lufthansa is in negotiation with US aircraft maker Boeing and its European arch-competitor Airbus, as well as the Brazilian manufacturer Embraer and Canada's Bombardier.
The German airline wants to replace 30 of its Boeing 747 and 29 of its Airbus A340 aircraft with long-haul planes, as well as 62 of its Boeing 737 with European aircraft, the newspaper said.
It added that Lufthansa also wants to replace several of its 83 A320 planes, and may buy up to 60 Embraer for its domestic flights.
Italy has become a bigger market for Lufthansa due to the financial troubles of the Italian national carrier Alitalia, the paper said.
In another article to appear in Der Spiegel, the German magazine said that for long-haul jets, Lufthansa is interested in the new model Airbus A380 superjumbo jet as well as the current model 747-8 from Boeing, and for its medium-haul fleet, it is debating between the Airbus A350 and Boeing's 787 and 777 planes.

Given you're probably working on the 747s at BOM, I'm guessing the LH long haul order might go the Boeing way - with a few 748s and maybe even some 773s in the short term? This is of course pure speculation
BLR is likely to be upgraded to a 747-400 from the existing A340-300 service from the coming winter schedule onwards
Our Boeing 747-400 fleet is to be revamped and an entirely new seating version is to be introduced featuring the new business class product... cant reveal the exact breakup of the seating just yet.

And surprise surprise - I'm booked on LH 755 on 4/Oct and return via LH754 on the 18/October - hence getting to experience the old and the new!! Will try to keep notes and get a good trip report in place on this sector. I've not flown LH455/454 for ages now (don't know if I've actually ever flown that flight), since most of my flying to SFO has been on SQ/TG over the past few years.
It's definitely going to be interesting to see how the BLR airport deals with a full jumbo coming in at night
