As I am traveling on a company conference to Dublin via Frankfurt, my transit time in Frankfurt is only 1 hour. Since I am traveling first time on this route via Frankfurt wanted to know is 1 hour sufficient to catch my plane onwards. Both my arrival and departure are from terminal 1 in Frankfurt.
Besides as an Indian passport holder I have taken a transit Visa for Germany, so do I need to clear immigrations and then come back to board the plane or can I directly transfer to my aircraft. If I can directly transfer to the aircraft then at what point will someone check my transit visa.
Any one who have been from Frankfurt before appreciate if any one can guide me on this.
Srini - 1 hour should be sufficient for LH @ FRA - they are good with connections, and will probably even have someone to guide you in case your flight from India gets delayed.
I don't think you need to clear immigrations in FRA, since Ireland is not part of Schengen - you will have to clear immigration directly at Dublin airport.
there is no need for a transit visa when transiting FRA or Germany in general. you however obviously need a valid visa for your destination if required as varies from country to country, and unless proceeding for permanent residency... you would require a valid confirmed return ticket into India.
1hr is usually enough to make your connection in FRA... however i usually advise our passengers with these connections to try and shift to a slightly later flight if there is one and if they dont mind.... simply because ever since the LHR plot... local security has been delaying departure of all airlines.... in some cases we leave nearly an hour or more behind departure... all because of security checks prior to boarding.
So if you can... keep a little buffer and take the next flight out...
oh...btw.... i speak w.r.t LH and not AI.... i dunno if your flying out on AI though...
Visa required, even if continuing by the same aircraft. Visa must cover each person mentioned in passport.
However, visa not required provided: - transiting only through Frankfurt, Munich or Hamburg; and
- continuing to a third country by same or first connecting
aircraft within 24 hours (Note: Hamburg transit area open only between 04:30 and 23:30); and - holding valid visa for Canada, Switzerland or U.S.A.; and - arriving and departing from/to a non-Schengen state (see:
TIRGL/SCHS ); and - travelling to/from one of the countries for which they hold a visa; and - not leaving the transit lounge; and - holding sufficient funds, ticket with confirmed reservation
and all travel documents required for next destination.
Transit through any other airports will require a (transit) visa.
This TWOV facility also applies for return travel provided it is one journey and return travel has been commenced on or prior to the expiry date of the visa.
Transit without visa is not allowed if making more than one stop in Germany.
Non-compliance with the transit requirements (incl. forged documents) results in: a. fines for the transporting carrier varying between
EUR 1,000.- and EUR 2,500.- per passenger; b. penalties of up to EUR 10,000.- per passenger in the event
that the carrier was negligent in taking the necessary precaution to the end that the passenger complied with the
entry requirements; and c. deportation to country of origin or any other place where
the person is admissible. Detention costs at carrier's
Thanks DBATH & Nimish. I have checked with the German consulate and they say that I do require a transit visa. I am flying from Singapore (as I am based here) on Singapore Airlines and then connecting onto Lufthansa. Unfortunately that is the last connecting flight out from Frankfurt if I miss that then I will have to wait overnight for the early morning flight.
I am still puzzled as to where will they be checking my transit visa if at all they check.
I don't think they will check your visa in FRA, but it will be checked by SQ before allowing you to board in SIN.
If it's an inter-airline flight, then 1 hour is cutting it really fine. And LH will probably not take responsibility for the missed connection :). You might want to call SQ and check what happens if you miss your connection due to a delayed SQ flight?
As Nimish says given your situation it is best to contact SQ and enquire what would happen if you were to miss your flight,
Is your ticket booked through and through as LH does codeshare on the SQ FRA-SIN flights, if your ticket is booked through and through there should be no major problem if you miss your connection, as i am sure you will be accomodated on the next available flight.
