At least 198 people, including the crew, travelling on Jet Airways flight no 9W-118 from London had a narrow escape on Sunday afternoon when the plane had to make an emergency landing at the Chatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport after one of its engines failed in mid-air.

“Jet Airways officials alone can tell the right reason for the engine failure,” said an official of the Airports Authorities of India (AAI). “The flight was given a green signal for emergency landing at 12.15 pm and it landed safely. We had taken all precautionary measures to avoid any accident at the airport or the runway.”

Sripura Sen, public relations officer with the Jet Airways, said, “Failure in one of the engines resulted in an emergency landing.” Another Jet PRO N Patabi said, “I am not aware of the technical problems that resulted in the engine failure. Flights from UK are getting delayed because of security reasons. This flight was supposed to reach Mumbai at 11 am.”

Coming as it did in the wake of the UK terror plot, passengers felt that the emergency landing had some other connotation.

Many were already traumatised by the prolonged security checks at Heathrow airport before boarding the flight. Reena (name changed), said, “After a tiring journey, we were told about the emergency landing. We all thought it was another terrorist attack.”

Worried relatives and friends waiting for those arriving by the flight felt that the airline officials were not sympathetic enough. Dr Nikhil Aachariya, a resident of Kandivali, who waited for four hours for Reena and another friend to emerge, said, “We were informed by the airport authorities that the flight was scheduled to land in Mumbai at 10.30 am  but apparently the flight got delayed and landed at 12.30 pm in the afternoon. Until then we were not given any information about the passengers and when will they be able to move out.”

Confused and desperate Aachariya got no information from Jet airways counters either. Situation worsened for Aachariya when he saw all passengers but for his friends walking out. “They had some problem with their baggage.” They came out only to discover that their bags were torn probably by the security officer.

Given the increased security threat, however, passengers on other flights also faced delays. For passengers of the Air India flight from Heathrow airport that coincidently arrived at the same time, it wasn’t different. Beatrice Gomez, 28, and Carmen Zambrana, 51, both UK residents, said they were offended by the whole travelling experience. Beatrice said, “I had planned our trip long ago and so could not cancel it. At Mumbai airport we were told to take off our shoes and put our passports in transparent plastic bags. Initially, we felt offended by all this but I guess the security in Mumbai was also competent as there was a huge crowd at the airport.”

Jet Airways had made alternative arrangements with Virgin Atlantic Airways and a few other airlines for the 240 passengers who had booked tickets for London from Mumbai in this flight on Sunday, Patabi said.

Hi Gang,

I witnessed this incident first hand yesterday. Here is how it all happened.

At around 11:30AM, I saw a couple of fire engines and an ambulance line up along taxiway Echo just as an SQ 777-300 was lining up for take-off. Peering into the distance, I could see another couple of fire engines waiting at a point opposite Terminal 1A. I knew something was amiss and called up Anuj to enquire what was happening. Anuj, after surfing the waves for some time told me that the captain of 9W-117, a Jet Airways A340 flying on the LHR-BOM route had requested for fire engines near the runway. However, there was no word on what exactly was the problem.

At around 12:15PM, Anuj informed me that 9W117 was on short finals into runway 27. I could see the aircraft in the distance through the hazy and misty weather but couldn't make out anything visibly wrong. I clicked a pic of the  plane as it was around 300m from me and another one as it passed overhead. As soon as it touched down on the runway, the fire engines, the ambulance and a couple of AAI jeeps chased it till it exited on to a taxiway. The captain then gave the all clear and informed ATC that they no longer needed assistance.

However, the fire engines followed the aircraft right till the terminal and waited there for around 5-10 minutes.  After around 15-20 minutes, I received an SMS from my wife saying that engine failure was the cause of the emergency landing and that the news was being broadcast on all the News channels.

I have submitted the pics on MyAviation.net and they will be up in a day or two. Will post a link here once they are uploaded.

- Vivek

You missed a golden chance of making a packet selling these exclusives to CNN-IBN or NDTV.

That thought did occur to me. However, "leaking" those pics to the media at such a tense time would mean that we would have to kiss our spotting sessions goodbye

I dont understand in the first report posted by KCM it says that the aircraft landed with only one engine thats not possible for a A343 with 198 pax.... Guess it shud have been one engine failure

BTW pls correct me if im wrong... Isnt this the first 9W A340 incident?

Wasn't there a  9W/ A-340 engine problem on a LHR-DEL flight a few weeks ago, which required a "return to London" and subsequent delays, reported in the media?

Here it is!!

http://www.uk-airport-news.info/heathrow-airport-news-250706.htm

Engine failure hits Jet Heathrow - Delhi flight
25.07.06

Over 100 passengers abroad a Jet Airways London Heathrow - Delhi flight had a harrowing flying experience when one of the plane's four engines suffered a mid-air 'burn-out', according to an article in the Times of India newspaper.

Satya Prakash, a passenger on-board the flight on July 15, told the newspaper: 'After about two hours of flight, there was a loud 'thud' and we saw sparks coming out of one the engines. Thankfully, it didn't lead to a a fire and the engine was switched off, but we could see on our television monitors that the aircraft was fast losing altitude. It created a panic situation inside the aircraft.'

The aircraft was turned around, dumped fuel and returned to Heathrow. But passengers say, that the airline did not put them up in heathrow hotels till late in the night. Jet denies this.

A Jet spokesman said: 'There was a technical fault and it was rectified. All passengers were taken care of, put up in hotels and acomodated on British Airways and Jet Airways flights to Delhi and Mumbai.'

Seems to be an A340 again. But Sir Mel, the A340s are quite brand new being ex-South African Airlines planes. Is it common  for so new an aircraft to have engine failure. Most manufacturer pride reliability of engines in terms of on-wing hours.

It depends on what was the Cause. Its unlikely to be Flame out [Which is Serious],Mostly could be a Fire Warning that Prompted IFSD.

But Without knowing the True story it would be wrong on our path to comment.

Anyone aware if it was the Same Aircraft & Same Engine.

In the first picture, you can clearly make out that there is something wrong in the outer right engine. Mx & engine experts, can you throw some light on this?
