Air Passengers Association of India

I got roped into joining them a few months ago, and haven't heard much from or about them after that barring the odd press release or coverage. Anybody have any inputs or information on them?

Referring to this Chennai -based organisation and run by Sudhakar Reddy?

They make a noise once in a while, but no one takes them seriously. Began as a voice to protest the high handed ways of IA and just lost track.

Was once what Kapil Kaul is now. Every media organistion had to quote him!!

This is the latest update, this year, when Reddy had something to rant and rave about.

I became a member by paying 2500.oo and after that the interaction has been sporadic at best. They have a lot of "committee members" and initially they wanted to make me one for Pune region, but then they sent me a lot of literature asking me to help in making other members with some guidelines on how the membership fees would be shared.

Now suddenly I got an eMail from them asking me to see them on NDTV and help them with more media publicity. But they also told me they have a magazine called PLANETALK. And in the bargain there is a person, Vijay, who has started exchanging interesting eMails with me. Shall have them up here soon.

I don't know too many, but I do know that when I started taking on the MoCA and AAI on this business of exemptions/preferences to so-called VIPs, then they rapidly dis-associated themselves from the efforts! Even now, the approach is to throw press conferences and invite babu-dom and politicos.

How would you suggest effecting change in a bureucratic country like India without engaging the Babus and politicos ?

It will be interesting to see how did the telecom industry achieve progress in reducing red tape.

APAI has been active.

India struggles to keep aircraft aloft
By Raja M

... The Chennai-based, non-profit Air Passengers Association of India (APAI) is worried that the present civil-aviation boom is more than the DGCA resources can handle, particularly in granting safety audits of airlines. It wants a civil-aviation regulatory independent of the directorate. APAI president D Sudhakara Reddy said, "We demand creation of a Civil Aviation Regulatory Authority along the lines of the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India to tackle issues concerning passenger safety."

...

The whole article is in "Editorial, Analysis, Opinion" section.

Engaging babus and politicians is fine, that's how it needs to be done, but today I as a passenger have the artillery with me so why not let the babus know it, too?

Well gopi has been mentioning about seeting up a org similar to NASSCOM ( http://www.business-standard.com/common/storypage.php?autono=103526&leftnm=1&subLeft=0&chkFlg )=, which IMO is required, his statement about pvt monopoly is true as was evident with 9W literally ruling the skies up until 2003. Additionally we need the MOCA to form a regulatory body like the ATOL in U.K. plus the pax asso. The problem with the pax asso is the baggage of regional prejudice that we indians carry, if u know what i mean.
