Etihad plans to double flights to India

New Delhi, Aug 3. (PTI): UAE-based Etihad Airways on Wednesday said it planned to double the number of its flights between Abu Dhabi and India and also fly to new cities in the southern part of the country.

"Subject to agreement between the Governments of UAE and India to increase the number of flights, we are definitely looking at doubling our flights to India," Etihad Regional Manager Asia Pacific Charles Phelps-Penry said here.

Currently, Etihad operates a total of ten flights, seven connecting Abu Dhabi with Mumbai and three with Delhi.

"We are also exploring the possibilities of adding three more cities from the south," Penry said, adding the airlines had zeroed in on Hyderabad, Kochi, Thiruvananthpuram, Bangalore and Chennai.

"Out of these five we will finalise on three," he said, however, adding that the plans were subject to approval for increased quota.

He said Etihad will also look to fly to other destinations in north India, however, not in the near fututre.

So, what all three cities would you zero in?? I'd say one among COK and TRV, and that leaves two from among BLR, HYD and MAA.

What about CCU ? Etihad has in the past announced CCU as a prospective destination. Being underserved CCU might be a higher revenue generator than MAA. Apparently EK's services to CCU are going quite full. BA and AI are doing phenomenally on their services to LHR from this city.

While it is good to know about airlines increasing/starting flights to/from India, one does get the feeling, that GOI is only hurting the private Indian carriers rather than protecting AI/IC by not allowing the private carriers to fly to the Gulf.

AI/IC have made profits in the Gulf inspite of all the Gulf carriers, so Im sure it would'nt hurt their fortunes too much 9W and other Indian airlines were allowed to fly there.

Also I guess most of us agree that the 5 year policy for private carriers is draconian. But what I dont seem to understand is how is GOI benefitting from this rule. And apart from the Gulf AI/IC do not fly to too many destinations across the globe that their fortunes would be hurt. They only fly the relatively high density routes, where they already have a lot of competition from the European/Middle Eastern carriers.

Can someone explain please. As they say "apne pairon pey kulhadi maarna"

Cheers
