Surya Airlines will starts its inaugural flight from here connecting the entire North East from October.
The 19-seater state-of-the-art aircraft will connect the capital city with Guwahati, Silchar, Shillong, Imphal and other major NE cities.
Speaking to reporters here, Chairman of Surya airlines K Balachandran Nair, who is also the Chairman of Global Education Net (GENET), said the process of starting the inaugural flight had already been taken up.
‘‘The Director General of Civil Aviation has already assured us that everything will be finalised by September-end and the flight can be started from October. A final date will be announced later,’’ he said.
He also added that flights from here will be operated to three other airfields of the state--Khowai, Kailashahar and Kamalpur. The 1900 D aircraft will be procured from the United States, he said.

Himmat, for the the terrain its operating in and the sectors they expect to cover it seems to be a optimum type. I do not have the CASM for this aircraft however if you notice they are operated on similar sort of terrain and routes in US.
Foll the opening of the Indo-China border in sikkim there is renewed interest in that region and surya should be able to attract the yuppie & hippie crowd.
Hi, Sikkim doesn't have an airport btw. I guess it must be Bagdogra. I don't think terrain is different there as compared to any other part of the country. Having been stayed there i can that. Nice to know that there will be a special airlines serving NE except Alliance Air ATR's ofcourse. Cheers Shivendra
Surya Airlines, promoted by Kerala-based Universal Empire group, is all set to spread its wing in northeast in technical collaboration with Nepal’s Buddha Airlines.
The new airline will specifically target the northeast and subsequently may connect a few neighbouring states.
Universal Empire Group Chairman K Balachandran Nair said the airline is expected to start operations by October-end with a ninteen-seater Beachcraft aircraft.
Apart from all the state capitals of the NE region, it is also aspiring to connect some airstrips that are not in use now.
Mr Nair also informed that the group has already approached the government to repair these small airstrips and got clearance from the Foreign Investment Promotion Board (FIPB). It is now awaiting approval from the ministry of civil aviation.
Universal Empire has set up the first private medical college in NE at Agartala.
Had a proposal of some Amritsar Airways which wanted to fly to India-UK
Dont ask me......ive lost count.
Air Kerala is out. Kerala Govt. (both the UDF AND LDF, or the previous Congress and the now Left Govt.) keep making noises about this. They have even invited Air India to a share in stakeholding. Thulasidass and Praful Patel have succeeded to an extent in warding this off. Kerala Govt. is now bending backwards to get AI to set up an MRO near Trivandrum for its 737s. This Air Kerala idea was for exclusive flights to the Gulf.
Visa .... some of its pilots are now in AI. Never really got off.
Air Bengal fell off the map, but managed operations for sometime.
Then there is Magic Air, Yamuna Airways and then East-West desperately trying to make a come-back. Magic has run into problems over the NRI status of its promoter --- some Miss Radia or Nadia.
Another one planned is Frankfinn Airlines --- a spin-off of the Frankfinn Airhostess Traning Academy. Sapna Gupta's latest idea after getting Soha Ali Khan Pataudi, Diana Hayden and Mallaika Arora Khan to join the academy as lecturers!!!
