Passengers are not the only people who get irritated when their flight gets delayed. Pilots and air traffic controllers often vent their irritation on their radio sets.

"The other day we had to hold in air for hours as we were 43 in the sequence and we were low on fuel. We had to make a last minute diversion. Even at the busiest airport like Chicago, the waiting time is about 30 minutes," said Captain Kaul, Pilot.

"The flight was 43 in sequence and every aircraft takes three minutes to land. So if you multiply 3x43, the pilot knew about his position more than 2 hours in advance. Why could he not calculate and divert accordingly," said Gulati, Air Traffic Control Officer.

Points of contention

At busy airports like Delhi and Mumbai, air traffic controllers now deal with landings or take-offs every two minutes and pilots often end up circling in the air sometimes even up to an hour.

To de-stress and cope with increasing workloads better, pilots and air traffic controllers have decided to talk out their points of contention.

ATCs get irritated when pilots use cell phones inside cockpit as it interferes with their radio communication, pilots on the other hand get annoyed when ATCs give preference to flights carrying VIPs.

Another point of contention is on why pilots put every delay on the ATC when many delays occur because of other reasons.

Playing the referee is Aviation Minister Praful Patel who had a clear message both for the controllers and the pilots.

"Aviation has grown by 50 per cent this year. But I have the same concerns like an average Indian about safety and convenience. Please think through the eyes of the passengers and find out the solution," said Patel.

About three years ago about 150 flights used to operate daily. Today the number is over 400. Clearly there is need for more dialogues between pilots and ATCs to ensure that every time you fly you are safe.

believe me.... at BOM... the delays are HEAVILY due to ATC.... other factors may total upto 20% of the delays...

in many cases ATC/Apron Control has held up many an international Airline pushback even for simple towing of AI parked aircrafts from remote many a bay away to the terminal gate...

just the other day a tractor towing a parked AI 743 was given clearance to tow it across the main apron taxiway inspite of us asking for startup and push clearance before they could even push the AI jumbo back from the remote..... same thing for BMIs departure a few days prior to this

Towing Preference only for AI & IC.The rest only get Taxi Preference.

thats the problem when you have a single runway operation in effect and the taxi onto the active is a single one with both the homebase airline and the international ones competing with each other to be the first one off the blocks...
