The induction of the aircraft from AI Express would ensure that the parent does not have to look outside for acquiring aircraft and the subsidiary would get lease rental for an expensive asset that otherwise it might not be able to utilise.
What utter nonsense! Why did AIX order the a/c this year if now they're having doubts on being able to use them? I think it's news like this that confirms what a mess AI is really in.
They can try to source the planes from Singapore Airlines as SQ will retire its 747 or down its 747 fleet to minimum. its a great time for AI to do a big shopping.

The 737s for AIX (on order from Boeing) are being/will be elayed slightly as AI suddenly decided that some of the aircraft must be in 2-class.
And now the leased planes might be redone into 2-class with IFE. Additional costs.
Messed up thinking in Delhi and Mumbai.
Meanwhile IA is carrying on ahead with its plans. Wonder what Ernst has to say about the merger.

If AIX can't use these a/c why don't they lease it to the pvt operators instead. AI / IA are the biggest threat to the aviation industry in India and need to be wound up asap whatever the cost. Its a very high price the nation is paying to amuse a few high paid employees.

Nothing could be more true. Unfortunately due to the stupidity of the system and the AI mgmt, all the employees and the country suffers as well.

So someone here help me understand this please - Why is AI is looking for wet leased 777 family a/c!!
Don't they have a bunch of leased a/c going back this winter? Which means all the crew from those should be available for the new a/c they're looking to lease..
I mean aren't they expecting a flood of the new a/c by mid next year? If they don't have the crew in place now - how do they hope to manage next year onwards??? Or am I missing something very fundamental here?

Bear in mind most (good %) of the crew manning these leased a/c are foreign contract pilots, so they go with the a/c. The wet lease deals might be more expensive in the short run but flexible to drop off in the event of conditions changing. And the most imp reason IMO is the GOI wants these state run airlines to grab all that they can before opening up the intl market to the pvt players, which could happen soon considering the overcrowding in the dom sector. And probably the aviation industry is softening in other parts of the world i.e. USA, ANZ , airlines there might be happy to position their ept and crew for cost price on wet lease rather than make both redundant and incurr higher re-induction costs when markets start firming up.
It is confirmed that AI is taking ZK-SUH on wet lease. It is powered by GE engines unlike the other B744s. It comes with the cockpit crew and maintenance crew for regular mx. works. Major mx. works will be done by AI.
It is likely to operate on BOM-CDG-EWR sector.
I wonder what will happen to the interiors by the time it is returned to NZ.

Thanks for the news!!!
Since it's a wet lease, expect the Kiwis to be keeping an eye on things. (And they can have company with the other Air India Kiwi crew ---on the 777s!!!!)
Each seat, as the pictures above show, have cost ZK quite a bit. Also, ZK-SUH was the last 747-400 to get the new cabin changeover.
Also it will be just Business, Premium Economy and Economy. No First.
Fleet grounded due to lack of engines leading to cancellation of flights
New Delhi , Sept. 25
With the schedules of both Air India and Indian getting affected due to engineering problems plaguing its fleet, the Ministry of Civil Aviation plans to review the engineering department of the two airlines.
"We have taken a serious view of the various incidents and will examine all the issues before deciding on what needs to be done," a senior Government official told Business Line.
Officials unhappy
The functioning of the engineering department of the two airlines was also raised at the Parliamentary Consultative Committee meeting held in Kolkata recently.
At the meeting, senior Government officials and several Members of Parliament expressed unhappiness at the functioning of the department.
While over the past few months, Indian has seen a portion of its fleet grounded due to lack of engines, AI aircraft have been involved in various incidents in the past few days that have forced it to cancel its regular flights.
AI officials maintain that only some of the aircraft in the fleet were giving trouble.
"The airline has a mixed fleet of owned and leased aircraft. The owned aircraft are functioning fine. However, there could be some issues with the leased aircraft.
The management is doing everything in its powers to ensure that these issues are sorted out and least inconvenience is caused to the passenger," a senior AI official said.
Problem with combi
The airline, however, admitted that there had been some problem with one particular aircraft, a Boeing 747-400 combi, that had been having trouble despite being certified by the manufacturer recently. "There were some disruptions in the past due to the grounding of this aircraft. We are taking remedial steps by sending aircraft in our fleet, including the leased Boeing 777 and Boeing 747 aircraft, abroad for overhaul," sources said.
Indian, too, faced similar problems as several of its aircraft were grounded thereby effectively reducing its fleet strength.
After a review meeting chaired by the Minister for Civil Aviation Minister, Mr Praful Patel, the airline decided to start sending engines abroad for overhauling.
The move is expected to help the airline have its entire fleet of more than 40 aircraft in operational condition by the year-end.
