India ATC & CPDLC

Hi guys was just reading a TR on airliners.net which has actually made me really more curious about the technical aviation stuff. The TR was by EK pilot and he seems to be abusing BOM ATC big time. Can someone tell me what are the problems which our ATC are facing and what exactly in CPDLC is in detail?

its cockpit to ATC datalink communication system... identifies the a/c/regn/operator etc etc and provides ATC with routing and overflight permissions etc... depending on how advanced the systems are.

It helps in times where there maybe a complete communication failure of radios/transmission in which case digital contact still remains...and advisories can be exchanged works on satcom tech as far as i know.. if im not mistaken

An Article by ANET-INDIA member Bhargavi in the DNA paper

DGCA asks foreign pilots to learn English

Bhargavi Kerur

Monday, August 21, 2006  23:45 IST

BANGALORE: Recently, a Russian pilot flying an Indian airline misunderstood the instructions in English from the Air Traffic Control (ATC) and crossed the path of another aircraft and nearly sparked off a mid-air catastrophe over Mumbai.

Such near-mishaps happen at least once in ten days with the number of foreign pilots being hired by Indian airliners rising and their difficulties over understanding English increasing, say civil aviation officials. ``But these incidents are not recorded,’’ one official confided.

Concerned over the language hiccups, the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) is planning to conduct English language proficiency tests for pilots as well as ATC personnel. “We have also received a directive from International Civil Aviation Organisation (ICAO) mandating these tests,” A K Sharan, director (Training and Licensing) of DGCA told DNA.

why only foreign pilots??.... ul should seriously hear the Air Deccan ones.... more so their trainee F/O's...... real riot on the airwaves...

in some instances i've even heard frustrated BOM tower controllers literally SPELL out instructions to the DN crews!!

it really gets me thinking sometimes... wether nowdays if our domestic players even bother to do any sort of language screening for their new hires...

The problem is in the Accent not the Language.Pilots from South America & SE Asia talk a different Accent.

I have practically experienced one such situation when the ATC was literally pleading to God asking if DN could wind up....cos it took him about 11 minutes to explain two wordsto the DN crew

Thanks alot for the link Mel.

As far as the accent goes yeah it takes time to understand the language. On the contrary some of the international airlines pilot have immaculate english and its so fun listening to them on the air band. One such airlines which i always look foward to is the Austrian airlines pilots. They really have a clear and a good accent which infact puts our atc to shame lol

Most of the time it starts like Good evening Delhi this is flight OS blah blah blah.........
..

Sahara pilots seem to be quite patriotic as they often seem to start with namaskar which other india based airlines dont follow much. The most funny pilot i have ever heared was of DN who was pronouncing zero as gero....
