Send Sunderban back to Boeing: A-I panel

Says the manufacturer should re-certify the plane before it flies again
NAVEETA SINGH

Acommittee of experts set up by Air-India to look into the many mishaps of Sunderban, a Boeing 747-400 that has been with A-I since April 2005, has recommended that the aircraft be sent back to its manufacturer, Boeing, in Seattle. The aircraft can be put back into use once it is re-certified by the manufacturer, the committee has said.
A-I formed a committee comprising its officials, engineers, technicians and also Boeing officials to examine the aircraft in April this year after it made its third emergency landing in five months. Headed for Frankfurt-Los Angeles on April 1 with 284 passengers and 20 crew members, the plane landed in Mumbai after two of its 24 tyres burst. (See box for ‘Track Record of Mishaps’). The plane has since been grounded at the Kalina hangar though it was declared fit for flying after a few tests.
A spokesperson for A-I said: “The panel has submitted its report saying the aircraft should be re-certified by Boeing and can then be used again.” Most committee members were in favour of sending the plane back because its technical problems were recurring.
If the committee’s recommendations are accepted, the Sunderban will be sent to Seattle in September this year. “However, this will not affect our Los Angeles flights,” the spokesperson added.
A-I leased the Sunderban in April 2005 at the rate of $45,000 per month. The lease period is three years.

TRACK RECORD OF MISHAPS

Dec 19, 2005: Four tyres of the plane burst during takeoff at the Los Angeles airport, throwing airport operations out of gear for over an hour. All 256 passengers and crew are safe, but plane sustains substantial damage.
March 13, 2006: Los Angelesbound flight is recalled after pieces of rubber from the tyres are found at Delhi airport, from where it took off. Aircraft makes emergency landing in Mumbai.
April 1, 2006: Flight 137 to Frankfurt with 271 passengers is diverted to Mumbai after rubber pieces from tyres are found at Delhi airport again.Aircraft grounded in Mumbai.

The Problem is with the MLG  & Not the Entire aircraft.

Isn't this aircraft lying at the Air India hangar at BOM? Saw it a couple of weeks ago parked amongst the scrapped 747-200s!

lease rate of $45,000 a month isn't much!! or is it that I have no idea about the trade.

BTW!! It seems that the commmittee is pondering what to do when even the coconut didn't work.

Reported by RobK on Airliners.net that there was an AI 744 on it's way from India to Seattle, via LGW. This is probably VT-AIM on it's way back to it's manufacturer for re-certification

To me it makes sense sending it back to Boeing for screening and testing. To my mind it also indicates an issue which is beyond AIs in house Mx expertise and would require specific detailed knoledge and facilities available only at Boeing... or even though they may be available at other locations for heavy Mx around the world... and in some closer cities... i guess its the decision of the "Owner" of the aircraft to send it to their choice of MRO.. keeping in mind she is leased by AI and not owned by AI

Sunderbans is ex-Air Canada. AI has leased it from Wells Fargo Bank, Northwest National Association, C/o Aircastle Advisor LLC1251, New York.
