Which airports in India will be prepared to take the A380 i feel its only BOM and DEL

well!! you'll have to increase the scope of the topic to include international.  As far as India is concerned, you've answered yourself.


Among international, I'd think (besides the hub of the airlines that have ordered)



  • YYZ and YUL
  • JFK
  • LAX
  • LHR

these are just to name a few

I read somewhere that the new BLR airport will initially not be ready for the 380 (when it opens in April 2008)

Centre clears blueprint for City international airport


As per the newly approved design, the airport will have more apron area, longer taxiways, increased number of aircraft stands and a larger terminal. There will, however, be no second runway, which will come up during the next phase. The new design will see 36 aircraft stands from the earlier planned 20 while apron area will be enhanced from 1.8 lakh square metre to 2.6 lakh sq m. The terminal building area will increase from the original 55,850 m to 71,000 m providing for additional conveyor belts for luggage movements and more check-in counters than planned. The airport will now be built to handle several hundred more passengers than the originally planned 2,017 passengers per hour.

The air traffic control will be equipped to handle 27 aircraft per hour instead of the earlier planned 20. The terminal will be planned in such a way that minimum time was taken for passenger boarding.

The authorities say one runway will be enough to handle the 11.4 m passengers. The runway will have a length of 4000 m, 45 m width and 7.5 m shoulder on either side. �Instead of the second runway, we are looking at optimizing its utilisation. The stress is on optimization of all facilities than expansion�, Mr Kumar added. ...


Unfortunately, the runway is only ICAO Code E standard, and not F which is the new requirement for A380 as per ICAO. It is recommended to have 60m width runway with 15 m shoulders for A380. What BIAL is going for is for 747 standard. While this won't make much difference as A380 can still operate on this runway, it would have been better to build for the future.

I hope the A380 Project is Sucessfull firstly.


About the Airports Infrastructure for the A380 goes.In the Country The Deadline should be met if there is a schedule proposed,which normally does not occur in the country.Currently things look tough.Time will tell.

Whether you like it or not, Sydney will be the first in the world to get the A380. SIA made a huge noise about this (There's a link in this forum on that). The rest of the names all come next.

Part of the report:

Sydney Airport will receive the A380's first commercial flight when Singapore Airlines starts flying the super jumbo on the Singapore to Sydney route in late December. (Since changed)

The airline intends to fly at less than the aircraft's capacity with 480 passengers in three classes, with plans for the extra space remaining a closely guarded secret.

Sydney Airport has already spent $120 million preparing for the A380 by building new aero bridges, strengthening runways and straightening up taxiways.

So far, 16 major airlines including Qantas, Lufthansa, Emirates and Virgin Atlantic have placed a total of 159 firm orders for the A380.

Airbus has forecast that it must sell 250 to break even.

More than 60 airports around the world will be ready for A380 operations by 2010 with major hubs such as Frankfurt, Paris, London Heathrow, San Francisco and Singapore also preparing for the A380.

What i have heard apart from BOM DEL HYD BLR [later stage] is that airports like AMD and JAI will also be made A380 ready as they are diversion airports incase of inappropriate weather conditions at BOM and DEL like fog, rain etc...

If Cochin gets Emirates A380s - it will give an entirely new meaning to the word - Air Bus!!!

India will soon have the first super jumbo Airbus A 380, with the government giving Vijay Mallya's Kingfisher Airlines to import five of the world's largest passenger aircraft into India.


In addition, Kingfisher has also been given permission to import 15 wide-bodied aircraft and a business jet.


According to civil aviation ministry officials, the approval to import A 380 aircraft come with certain conditions including, Kingfisher finding parking and landing slots in Indian airports.


This makes Kingfisher the first airline in the country to have permission to buy the super jumbo aircraft, which has not yet gone into commercial services.


Mallya's airline will also become the first carrier in the country to own and fly an Airbus A 380.


Interestingly, airports in India are not equipped to handle this aeroplane. They need longer runways and better parking facilities to accommodate a super-jumbo like Airbus A 380.


In addition, runways needs to be widened to accommodate these aircraft and parking bays will have to be re-done to allow faster embarkation and disembarkation of passengers. Airports across the world are spending billions to modify facilities to accommodate these aircraft.


According to aviation experts, an aircraft such as A 380, which has a seating capacity of over 500 passengers, can be typically put to use in high capacity routes.

Los Angeles International Airport has closed one of its four runways for a reconstruction project partly aimed at accommodating the Airbus A380, the superjumbo jet set to begin U.S. service in 2007. The runway, the southernmost and the second-longest at LAX, will reopen in March. It's being moved 55 feet south of its current location.


The objective: to improve safety for the big jets by further separating the runway from the one immediately north of it. It is part of a larger $333 million improvement project that includes building interconnecting taxiways.


The Federal Aviation Administration estimates construction-related delays of up to 25 minutes during peak hours and has advised the airlines to adjust their schedules. United and American, the airport's two largest tenants, say they are adding several minutes later this month to their gate-to-gate times to account for the possibility of longer taxi times. American will add three to four minutes on average to its schedule for LAX flights, says spokesman Tim Smith.


SAN FRANCISCO


Parking lot baggage check


Travelers in San Francisco can now check their bags before they enter the terminals. The airport contracted in June with Bags Inc., a remote-skycap-service company in Orlando, to enable passengers arriving in the long-term parking lot to pay $5 a person and have their bags checked in for domestic flights at the lot, says Kandace Bender, an airport spokeswoman.


The service is available for six airlines: Alaska, American, Continental, Delta, Northwest and United.
