I disagree.

The F/A-18s with the US Navy use a catapult assisted take-off and an arrestor cable assisted landing from aircraft carriers. Now, although we will have an arrestor cable system on the new Gorshkov carrier, the catapult system is a closely guarded secret and does not exist anywhere else outside the US. The Gorshkov will have a ski-ramp for takeoff

So, the most likely alternative to succeed the Harriers will be the Mig-29K which are being packaged along with the Gorshkov. These are the maritime versions of the Mig-29 aircraft capable off taking off from a ski-ramp which is fitted on the existing carrier Viraat as well as the new carrier Gorshkov.

Now now, you are missing the whole point here. You cannot say that all Migs are bad just because Mig-21s start falling out of the sky... Mig-29Ks that are being ordered for the Gorshkovs aren't 60's vintage but brand new planes fitted with modern engines, avionics and weapon systems.

The Mig-21s are accident prone because of their age & the lack of adequate training on aircraft like intermediate trainers for rookie pilots.

Comparing a Mig-21 to Mig-29K would be akin to comparing a Boeing 707 to a Boeing 747!! It doesnt make sense at all......

Would you say, Boeings??? again oh no... just because an old Boeing 707 crashes??

Also MIG-21 has the highest take-off speed of all the fighters with IAF. Imagine putting a recruit straight from Kiran to MIG-21, and expecting him to master it within few months...

Anyways for those who dont have this info... in the 1998 war at Kargil, India tried operating MiG-21s/23s (and some say even the high-altitude capable MiG-25s) first to attck the infiltrators at the top but they were well capable of shooting these MiGs down. So India stopped the MiG-21/23 attacks even MiG-25s were withdrawn. Next turn was with the Jaguars, Mirage 2k and MiG-29s who were the only ones who could play this role of attacking the infiltrators at the top.

But the bombs were quite expensive and taxes for govt. employees were raised. It was as if for every 1 bomb dropped there was 0.5% rise in tax

So India resorted to the ancient traditional method of its hundreds and thousands of patriots to fight a gallant battle there of course we were successful but if u count the aur battle, WE LOST!

In Kargil.
The IAF had to attack the posts without crossing the LOC.

With One hand behind the back its tough to Win,but We did & lot a lot of Good men in the Process.I still think We should have crossed the LOC.

yes I do mean the trainer Hawks!

BTW! I'll have to take your argument about MIGs with a pinch of salt. The MIG-25s won't have been considered for this kind of role. They are in altogether different league. Moreover, if they can shoot down MIGs, then why can't they do the same to M2K or Jaguars.

Weren't M2K used because of their ability to drop Laser guided bombs on top of Tiger Hill.
