you could be right - the last sector, LAX-SJC on LH/UA Star Alliance, was 90 minutes late. And in an aircraft that had not been cleaned, apparently.

 Hi guys,

Finally i am Back in Delhi my contact number is 9810714767. Delhi based members can contact me if planning any action on weekends.  BTW met my old friend who was back frm NYC and he seemed to be pretty much having S**ts for AI. I knw i wud inviting trouble as this forum is full of admirers of AI especially when it comes to the desi food. But i am fowarding few of his viewpoints.

The various shortcomings were that plane got delayed by 3Hrs and no annoucements for the same were ever made. The toilets were filthy. The seats and interiors of the 747-400 were worned out and there was no IFE.

He commented that it wud be better if we talk less abt the air hostesses.

His one straight statement was that Air India is the brand ambassador of the country each time that airline lands at the american soil. It gives a foreigner a first impression as to what a country would be like but looking at their service no wonder they do think that its incredible india

Why is there still talk of tattered interiors?

Can more light be shed on the ambitious AI project to completely revamp the interiors of its 8 A310s and 6 747-400s?

The A310s were to just get new (leather?) seats, new laminates and basically revamped IFE.

The 747-400s were the ones in for a complete makeover. This meant chucking out all the 300+ Economy seats and getting brand new ones with (Thales) AVOD IFE and internet in every seat complete with laptop plugin. First and Business too were being revamped but without disturbing existing seats/flatbeds. Also in were revamped galleys and toilets.

The entire A310/747 project was Rs. 400 crore+.

The first 747-400 was, if the schedule was maintained, supposed to be ready by June-end. (Each 747 was to be grounded at Mumbai for a budgeted 30 days and the work to be done in association with Boeing and Hindustan Aeronautics Limited).

Or has it to be still done?

AI source is not talking!!!!!!

Passengers refuse to alight AI flight; cite two-day delay

Kozhikode, Aug 8 (UNI)

Agitated over the undue delay in departure, passengers of an Air India flight that left Jeddah two days behind schedule, went on a protest by refusing to alight at the Karipur international airport this morning, police said.

Jeddah-Kozhikode flight, originally scheduled to depart on Sunday was grounded at the airport there due to some technical snag and reached here only at 0745 AM today, they said.

When contacted, AI sources said the delay was inevitable owing to some technical reasons and all the 240 passengers were accomodated at various hotels in Jeddah during the intervening period.

However, the passengers complained at AI failed to make alternate arrangements even as the delay prolonged gradually.

After staying in the flight for some time, the passengers finally got down and shouted slogans before dispersing from the scene.

Presuming the last of AI B787/B777s are recieved by 2012. A refurbishment of interiors costing Rs400cr to start with, factoring AIs avg cost escalation of x2, tax payers ends up paying Rs800cr. How do they expect to recover these costs with the present state of yeild in a increasingly competitive market ?

I think AI/IA for starters should have a transition management made of industry professionals to streamline the present mess and move towards merger and subsequent IPO. Lets see what does accenture have to say ? what is accenture exp of merging a sphagetti organisation like IA/AI ? Any body with info.

In the thread "Indian aviation and Parliament", Praful Patel told the Rajya Sabha only today (Aug. 8) that the Govt., is actively considering the merger of IA/AI and also confirming the appointment of Accenture. Most news channels have been flashing this. Main word here is "under active consideration". In the next sentence, Patel talks of the IA's new look!!

Asianet, the Malayalam TV channel, had a programme yesterday called (Lulu's Gulf Roundup") --Aug 13, 2006, 10 pm

The first story exposed the horrendous conditions Indian labour live in Saudi Arabia and Dubai. Triple decker bunker beds and cramped quarters in which 40 ppl are stuffed in. Rationed water. One a/c and one toilet for all of them. There was also a wire fence around the quarters with 24-hour security with AK-47s. They were escorted to and fro from the construction site.

If anyone working in AI had seen the second one, they would have run for cover. It was on 200 passengers travelling on the Jeddah-Calicut flight. A few technical snags on the plane ensured that they reached home two days after it was scheduled to arrive.

The TV channel interviewed all the passengers and they hurled abuse freely. They even showed how they locked up the AI regional officer in a hotel room, slapped him and refused to let him out for the two days till they got an answer.

Their point was that they looked forward to reaching India asap as they were all getting leave for 2 months after wrking for 2 years. So, every hour mattered.

The channel tracked them till they got off at Calicut. But if AI thought they would get off quietly it was mistaken. They refused to disembark and shouted slogans for 2 hours.

They were also angry about the "high fares" that AI charged.

AI on its part had no comment and only said that the A310 had a major technical problem. So they were obliged not to send the passengers on any other flight.

Air-India to help its staff manage change
TIMES NEWS NETWORK
[ SATURDAY, AUGUST 19, 2006 02:26:42 AM] NEW DELHI: In a bid to keep its employees abreast with the changing times, Air-India plans a ‘change management programme’ for its 14,000-odd employees, for the first-time in the last ten years. The company-wide programme will be part of the airline’s Rs 100-crore business process re-engineering exercise, that involves upgradation of IT infrastructure and communication technology, evolve new HR practices and employee productivity enhancement modules.

The international carrier will soon appoint a consultant to work on such a programme that will help employees adjust to the changing work culture within Air-India, and also keep up with t`he dynamic business environment of the aviation sector, V Thulsidas, chairman & managing director, Air-India told ET.

The airline is also close to finalising a fresh productivity-linked wage settlement deal with its employee unions that would lead to 15-20% jump in salary of Air-India employees across the board, he added. Consultants such as IBM and TCS are among the top contenders — from more than a dozen odd bidders — to be the change agents for Air-India’s business process re-engineering efforts, as part of the airline’s capex estimated to be around Rs 100-odd crore over the next two-three years, sources said.

Airline officials said they plan to kick off the change management programme for employees over the next three months. The previous such company-wide programme was held in 1996.

Mr Thulsidas said the technology and business process upgradation will be in line with latest IATA norms, as the airline gets ready to join one of the three global alliances by the year-end.

Air-India has placed orders for 68 new aircraft that will join the fleet over the next five years. The airline has recently appointed consultants to re-work its brand image, look-and-feel and service parameters offered to passengers. The airline will start sporting its new look and feel as it starts receiving delivery of new wide-bodied aircraft in February ’07, officials said. Mr Thulsidas said over the last three years the airline has shed over 3,000 people, even as it doubled its fleet size in the same period.

“We have been able to bring down staff per aircraft from around 500 to less than 400 in the last three years,” he added. The airline will soon come out with new parameters to measure employee productivity and come out with productivity enhancement modules, he added.

AI seems to be learning many lessons!

AI outsources JFK ground handling to Swissport

P R Sanjai / Mumbai August 21, 2006

National flag carrier Air-India (AI) has outsourced its passenger handling operations at the J F Kennedy airport to Zurich-based ground handling major Swissport International.

The outsourcing contract would result in savings of $7,50,000 per year for Air-India. The passenger handling operations was earlier carried out by 26-member staff and three supervisors.

The airline was amongst the few operators that was handling the flights at JFK airport for the last several years though services to new destinations like Chicago, Los Angles and Newark, where it operates daily services, were outsourced.

According to sources, an agreement was reached with the union for severence pay along with certain benefits for a specified period in lieu of the union agreeing to outsource the activity.

When contacted, an AI spokesperson said: "As part of the corporate strategy, the management is continuously looking out for activities that could be outsourced at foreign and Indian stations instead of doing it by deploying its own manpower."

Eeveral non-core functions are being identified and outsourced even in India resulting in considerable savings on manpower costs, he added.

Meanwhile, Air-India is scouting for flying training institutes to provide training to science and engineering graduates with zero flying background. The institutes would provide prospective candidates with Commercial Pilot Training and Multi Engine Rating as per syllabus and regulation prescribed by the Director General of Civil Aviation.

The candidates will be provided assistance by Air India to obtain educational loan to fund their own training.

The airline is also in the process of appointing a professional recruitment agency (PRA) for carrying out activities related to conduct of written tests and other formalities for selecting cadet pilots at Mumbai, Delhi, Chennai and Kolkata.

A-I passengers’ 2-day journey to Dubai

Delayed crew, technical snag result in a two-hour trip take long hours

Plaban Gupta

Pune, August 19: A simple activity like taking a flight turned out to be a nightmare for the 90 passengers of Dubai-bound Air-India flight AI-719 on Friday as a ‘missing’ aircraft and technical snags resulted in them being stranded at the Lohegaon Airport — and later at Mumbai’s Chhatrapati Shivaji Domestic Airport — for over 24 hours.

After completing the check-in formalities for the 3 pm-flight, an A-I official said that the flight had not arrived from Mumbai as there was no crew.

A V Condillac (63), a businessman from Dubai who was in Pune to visit his family checked in at 12.30 pm on Friday to finally reach Dubai at 5.30 pm (Indian Standard Time) on Saturday. ‘‘The aircraft arrived at 5.30 pm on Friday at Pune,’’ he said.

And that was not the end of the ordeal. After passengers boarded the plane but were told there was a minor technical snag. ‘‘The captain of the plane told us that one of the air conditioners wasn’t working,’’ Condillac added.

‘‘There were three children on the flight who were running a temperature and even though it was very warm, we weren’t allowed to get off,’’ he said. The passengers were finally allowed to disembark at 8.30 pm.

An Air-India official, on condition of anonymity, said: ‘‘In the holding area, we have a provision for only 100 people. There were already around 200 passengers there and we couldn’t let another hundred there.’’

The flight then took off — but for Mumbai — to have the passengers board a connecting flight to Dubai. An A-I official said: ‘‘The air conditioning wan’t working properly. Under such circumstances, the plane cannot travel for 3 to 4 hours at a stretch but a short trip is not a problem.’’

However, there was another rude shock in store at Mumbai when passengers were told that there had been no intimation from Pune authorities and consequently, there was no connecting flight.

Meanwhile, as anxious relatives calling the A-I office in Dubai were provided no information. Some of them even called the office of The Indian Express asking for information. ‘‘We do not know what’s going on. Can you find out if and when the flight will take off?’’ said an anxious mother whose five-year-old son was on the flight.

An A-I spokesperson from Mumbai however, said there were no aircrafts available in Mumbai. ‘‘All passengers were provided with hotel accommodation and a Tokyo-bound flight was diverted through Dubai to ferry passengers,’’ he said.

Air-India’s security regulations perturb passengers

Dubai, Aug 25 (UNI)

Air-India’s excessive imposition of hand baggage security regulations is causing tremendous inconvenience to passengers travelling out of Dubai.

Although the airline has not put any sign of warning for passengers to carry liquids, gels, creams and pastes, those who buy them from Duty Free shops are asked to discard them while boarding, after being security cleared in the holding area.

The Dubai-Bangalore flight yesterday was delayed by two hours as irate passengers protested, when asked to drop duty free purchases.

Although Air-India has issued orders that this rule comes into force from August 20, there is no sign at Dubai airport nor are passengers informed of the restrictions, Bahrain Tribune reported.

An airline official said the information was published in the newspapers and passengers should know about it.

It is believed that Air-India will be requesting airports in Bahrain, Oman, Qatar, Saudi Arabia and Kuwait as well as Abu Dhabi and Sharjah later this week, to place secondary security checks, after duty free complexes, so that no liquid materials are taken on board.

Indian passengers have no such restrictions even flying out of Dubai.

Despite confirmed tickets, passengers denied entry to plane

Amritsar, Aug 28: Thirty passengers, who were to board the Air India flight for Toronto, were left and dry at Rajasansi airport here on Monday after they were denied entry to the plane despite having confirmed tickets.

Airport sources said they were not allowed to board the plane which was packed to capacity.

All the 30 passengers, who were having confirmed tickets, protested strongly and forced AI staffers to leave their enquiry counters.

Later, Air India officials apologised to the passengers for the inconvenience caused to them.

They promised to arrange for them the next available flight to Toronto.

Duty free plane delay

An Air India flight from Dubai to Bangalore was delayed for two hours after passengers were forced to throw away liquids purchased in the airport’s duty free shop. Among the items that were dumped were tubes of gels, toothpastes, creams, lotions and shampoos.

It had earlier been stated that items bought at duty free could be taken onto planes. But a source from Air India last night said duty free was banned too.  “We are trying our best to communicate to all the passengers and the travel agents about our security policy,” said the official.

Pune to Dubai in 30 hrs

RSS Feeds| SMS NEWS to 8888 for latest updates

MUMBAI: Flying from Pune to Dubai usually takes about three hours. But last week, about 90 Air India passengers took 30 hours to complete that journey, as technical snags and operational problems delayed the flight.

The passengers have now taken up the matter with Union civil aviation ministry and the airline, seeking compensation. "We are collecting information about the flight from the 10 passengers who brought the matter to our notice.

We'll be filing a petition in Chennai HC to seek compensation," said Sudhakara Reddy, president of Air Passengers' Association of India.

The AI spokesperson said: "Due to a technical problem, we could not operate that aircraft. So we flew the Pune passengers to Mumbai and routed our Mumbai-Tokyo flight through Dubai, which led to the delay."

The incident took place on August 18. The AI-719 Pune-Dubai flight scheduled for a 3.15 pm departure was delayed by two-and-a-half hours initially.

Then again, about 30 minutes later Capt Walter Lang, commander of the flight, announced that there was a problem in the AC equipment which would be rectified shortly.

"We were made to wait inside the aircraft till 9.15 pm without any air-conditioning or information on the status of departure. Then we disembarked," he added.

Panic at Kenya airport as Air India plane blocks runway

Panic at JKIA as plane blocks runway
  By Bernard Momanyi

There was panic at the Jomo Kenyatta International Airport Monday night when an aircraft developed mechanical problems and blocked the runway for several hours.

The Air India plane, which was destined for Mumbai was taking off when one of its engines failed, prompting the pilot to apply emergency brakes bursting all its eight tyres.

It had 131 passengers and seven crew members on board and all of them had to use the emergency door when leaving the plane.

Kenya Airports Police Unit CID chief Judy Ndeda says the matter is under investigation by the Kenya Civil Aviation Authority Aircraft accident Inspectors.

A similar incident occurred last week when a UN aircraft destined carrying journalists and other officials to Somalia burst one of its tyres on the runaway.

All planes were diverted to Mombasa on that day after the UNDP-chartered plane, which was headed for Hergesa in Somalia, developed mechanical problems.

The plane was carrying UN staff and journalists, and no one was injured in the incident.

A similar incident in October last year caused severe delays at the airport, after a cargo plane made an emergency landing, blocking the runway.

The cargo plane, a Boeing 742 belonging to Air Atlanta, was headed to the Netherlands but was forced to return to Nairobi after it developed mechanical problems about an hour after take off.

All 37 passengers on board escaped unhurt after the left landing gear failed, forcing the aircraft to skid to the end of the runway.

Another scare on city-bound A-I flight

Gouri Shah
Tuesday, August 29, 2006  23:39 IST

It was a close shave for 140 Indian nationals travelling by Air-India flight number AI-200 from Dar-e-salam to Mumbai.

The flight, which was scheduled to leave Nairobi airport for Mumbai late on Monday evening, had to be aborted during take-off because of a technical snag. All passengers on board the A310 aircraft were evacuated immediately.

According to an sms by Sharad Rochlanay, a city businessman who was among the passengers, “The flight was aborted during take-off around 6.45 pm (Nairobi time). We were evacuated and made to wait on the airfield for over two hours before being taken to the airport. After four hours, we were transferred to our hotel rooms.”

According to an A-I official, “The flight was aborted during take-off following detection of engine trouble. This forced the plane to brake at full speed, resulting in a tyre burst. An emergency evacuation was conducted,” he said.

The passengers had been accommodated on a Kenya Airways flight, scheduled to land in Mumbai on Wednesday morning, he said.

Aviation experts probe Kenya airport mishaps

NAIROBI, Aug 29, 2006 (UNI) - Kenya’s aviation authority said Tuesday it was investigating two mishaps in less than a week at the country’s main international airport in which departing aircraft burst tires on takeoff.

While stressing that the runway at Nairobi’s Jomo Kenyatta International Airport was safe, the Kenya Civil Aviation Authority (KCAA) said it wanted explanations of the incidents, which have raised safety concerns.

‘‘A team from the ministry of transport has begun its investigations into the two incidents, we cannot give details until they finish their work but the runway is fully operation and safe,’’ KCAA spokeswoman Lucy Moricho told AFP.

The latest incident occurred late Monday when an Air India jetliner carrying 138 passengers and crew from Nairobi to Mumbai had to abort its takeoff due to engine trouble and ruptured all eight of its tires.

There were no injuries but the disabled plane blocked the main JKIA runway for several hours, causing delays in aircraft arrivals and departures, officials said.

Last Wednesday, there were similar delays at JKIA when a UN-chartered plane en route to Somalia was forced to abort its takeoff after it burst a tire on the runway and had to be towed from the tarmac.

Passenger served spoiled creamer on Air-India flight

Passenger served spoiled creamer on Air-India flight

Complains to A-I CMD, but gets no response for a week

Naveeta Singh

V K Agarwal, a frequent flyer with Air-India (A-I), was shocked when he was served a dairy creamer sachet that was past its expiry date onboard. Realising that bringing this slight to the notice of the crew would not make a difference, Agarwal sent the dairy creamer sachet to A-I chairman and managing director V Thulasidas. It’s been more than a week, but Agarwal has still not received a response from Thulasidas’ office.

On August 19 Agarwal, an employee at a private firm in Mumbai, boarded flight AI309 from Delhi to Mumbai. “I have been travelling by A-I for more than a decade now. I prefer this airline as it is very comfortable,” he says. He flies regularly on the Mumbai-Delhi and Mumbai-Dubai sector.

Agarwal was flying in the economy class. “I have the habit of looking at the manufacturing date of items served on flight,” he says. That night, to Agarwal’s horror, he found that the dairy creamer served with coffee was manufactured in November 2005. “And the expiry date was six months after the manufacturing date,” he adds.

Agarwal quietly put the sachet in his pocket and decided to take up the matter with the airline later. “I did not point it out to the crew immediately as I have had a bad experience earlier,” he says. “Earlier I used to fill in the complaint form on board the flight if I found anything objectionable. But there never was any response.”

After coming to Mumbai, Agarwal sent the sachet to Thulasidas on August 22 and attached a letter. “I want the culprits to be brought to book as such things tarnish the image of our country,” he says. “What if this had happened on an international flight?” he asks.

When this newspaper contacted A-I the spokesman said that they would investigate into the matter and if the allegations are found to be true, necessary action would be taken.
