How can u forget that IC/AI does more of social service than an airline. They fly flights when there is requirements like Kuwait war or Bhuj quakes or they flew soldiers to srinagar and leh durin 1999 kargil war... Even our ministers fly for free in these airlines as they r given passages... U expect a private player like jet or kingfisher to do such stuff... So privatisation is ruled out. but yes there is one topic within the airline that is hot now... the engineering unions will be merged with some private engineering venture like SIA Engineering... then there will be a difference but yes their "aunties" will remain the same so will the ground staff and management
CRISIS don't arise everyday, secondly operating a national carrier as part of crisis management would lead to the crisis i.e. Restrictions on pvt airlines to fly to gulf leading to mounting losses for domestic carriers due to excess capacity.
I've worked there (AI), seen it, done it all and got sick of myself. AI employees have been totally desensitised by the corruption around them. Some of the best times of my life were spent in that org however the excesses that are commited within AI by everybody is appalling and disgusting. We could have a seperate thread on the excesses of staff, DGCA officials and ministers pertaining to AI /IA.
Total agreement wid u its not the upper level people who are troubled its only the employees who face the music of these people but just think if tomorrow private boys fly gulf then what will happen to AI and IC
Besides during Hajj compare the ticket prices or better packafe prices of people opting Saudi and those of people opting IC or AI... lot of difference
Why does the govt do this... They reason it as serving those who cant afford but just count the total losses encountered by these 2 carriers... Who cares... Vote banks are locked on... Thats all

Air India website is down for last more than 18 hours leaving thousands of passengers in lurch. What is surprising is the fact that such an error has not come to the notice of the authorities. If one logs on www.airindia.com one gets the following reply on his screen.
ADODB.Field error '800a0bcd'
Either BOF or EOF is True, or the current record has been deleted. Requested operation requires a current record.
/Home.asp, line 112
This error is the result of programming bug. This problem that should not take much time to rectify.
Gujaratglobal tried to contact local area manager here, but he was not available for the comment. Someone from the DIT section said he was not aware of the fact that the website was down. He asked further details and responded that he was also getting the same message.
He said that only Mumbai office could give a reply because it handled the website.
An Ahmedabad based passenger Kartik Shah who has been trying to log on to the website for last several hours is surprised to find this reply on the website. He said that he had been facing problem with the Air India website since July 19 when he clicked contact us and meal preference link of the website. He filled the submission form and it bounced back.
His efforts to contact the authorities through call centre also met the same fate.
He is a US bound passenger with his PNR HMC7M scheduled to leave on July 27.
It goes without saying that Air India is India's national carrier. It is also a fact that it is last carrier to introduce e ticketing.
Same problem. Not able to log in.
Person trying a booking with AI has now shifted to SQ. Was very disgusted and kept saying that we are quick to tell the world that we are the top guns in IT.
Called the AI call centre no 1800227722. (1.40 pm. July 25, 2006)
Guy with a fake American twang came on the line. But language skills failed in a few seconds. "Please hold line, I say you. I'll be getting back now," was the answer.
Dead silence as we were put on hold.
A minute later, supervisor comes on line. Smart. After explaining it to him, he dismisses it saying that it has to be a local error and that it must be a fault at our end. Tells us very helpfully that the "Air India website is www.airindia.com. Okay?"
The "passenger" now defecting to SQ blows his top and tells him to log onto the web. Tells him that there are many angry passengers across India whohave the same problem. Also tells him to visit a few blogs and read the stuff about Air India.
This time Supervisor backs off. "I'll shoot off a mail to Mumbai HQ and tell them the problem. Have a nice day. Thank you for calling Air India."

"Passenger's" reaction after banging the phone down. "Shoot off a mail? Can't he pick up the phone and tell them?"
Modern technology is always a revelation for Air India (ground) staff. The way they handle a mouse is a story worth a million.
On the other hand, IA has improved greatly. Flight delays and any other information is now sent by email in addition to telephone alerts. They are also slowly mastering SMS.
Air India website which was down for last more than 18 hours is now operational. The website www.airindia.com was down because of some programming bug. Around noon when Gujaratglobal contacted local area manager office it pleaded ignorance about the problem.
Within couple of hours the web service of India’s national carrier has been restored.
I find the AI website very cluttered. AI does not even bother to update the fleet list. It still shows VT-EVJ as a part of the B747-400 fleet. I have sent a mail to them requesting them to have it removed. Let's sse what happens. Last time, I got a prompt reply from none other than Jitu himself.

the manage must have thought that shooting off an email is more sauve than calling. It's high time AI is sold off without any labour compromises where one has to keep such crap.
Here is a reply I received from Air India's PR dept regarding inclusion of VT-EVJ in the fleet list. Even AI seems to be improving.
Thanks for pointing out the error. We will be deleting it from our fleet list shortly.
Thanks once again.

NEW DELHI: An Air India A-310 plane recently created a major scare at the Bahrain airport when it landed on the wrong runway and not the one the ATC there had asked it to touch down on. The incident happened earlier this month.
The airline has since asked the erring pilot to remain "on ground" till an inquiry into this serious lapse gets over.
"There was no risk to passengers. Bahrain airport has two runways and our plane did not land on the one it was earmarked to touch down on.
The A-310 was till allowed to land on the other runway as there was no risk (meaning other plane landing or taking off there)," said an airline spokesperson. "The pilot will remain in Mumbai till the probe is over," he said.
Sources pointed out that the industry is facing a severe shortage of pilots because of which the DGCA recently raised the retirement age of pilots for commercial airliners from 60 to 65 some months back.
"Many airlines are now hiring retired pilots and inducting them after re-training. Since they have been out of practice for a while, mistakes can certainly take place," said an aviation industry insider.
In fact, on Thursday Union civil aviation minister Praful Patel told Parliament that apart from India, other national carriers were facing shortage of pilots.
Alliance Air had a shortage of 10 pilots each for its Boeing 737 and ATR Turboprop fleet. AI and Air India Express have a shortage of 85 and 22 pilots respectively.
London: An airline director has quit his six-figure salary job at Heathrow amid claims that he sexually molested four women.
Ashvini Kumar Sharma resigned as head of Air India's UK and Europe operation. He is facing charges of sexual harassment after a woman employed as a contractor by the airline filed an official complaint with the police.
The 22-year-old woman works for a fuelling and handling company contracted to several airlines including Air India.
She is thought to be one of four employees who have made official complaints to Air India management at Heathrow. All are thought to be eastern European and in their twenties.
Sources in the company have told the Evening Standard that senior officials at the airline have called for an immediate internal investigation after ordering Sharma to step down from his job.
A Met spokesman confirmed that Heathrow CID is investigating an allegation of harassment.
Sharma, who was a bodyguard to India's president Giani Zail Singh, joined Air India in 1984. He moved to London in 2001 where he lived in West Acton with his wife, Ajaya, and their daughter Aditi, now 21.
He soon became a major mover and shaker in Britain's Asian business community circles. But his relationship with his staff in the UK was often troublesome and many claimed that they were being overworked and underpaid.
This is not the first time Sharma has faced allegations of sexual harassment.
In 2004, Air India's investigation and fraud prevention team based in Mumbai sent a "two-member delegation" to London.
They were sent to conduct an investigation into allegations that he had made advances to two teenage girls who worked for a firm contracted to clean offices at the airline's UK headquarters in Brentwood.
The Times of India, published the testimonies of the two women both eastern European who had accused the airline boss of constant harassment. In the first case a woman from Prague spoke of how she quit the company after one week of cleaning Sharma's office after 6.30pm each evening.
She said: "Sharma would pester me for my phone number and would pass remarks. I was under severe stress as I dreaded each evening when I had to go there to clean the office. I come from a good and strict family and the incident shook me up, I couldn't hold on for long."
A senior Air India employee based in the UK, who asked to remain anonymous, told the Standard: "This is not the first time these kind of accusations have come out about Sharma. The problem is he has been protected in the past because of his political links with some of the most senior echelons of the Congress party.
"But the company have had enough now, and as the police have got involved the whole game has changed."
A Met police spokesman said: "We received an allegation of harassment made to Heathrow police on July 12, regarding an incident that is alleged to have taken place on July 8 at the Air India office at Heathrow airport. A 22-year-old victim has made an allegation against a male suspect. It is being investigated by Heathrow CID and it is being treated as harassment."
Coincidentally, we've just had somebody from our office fly PNQ-BOM-FRA-LAX on Air India, connecting onwards to SJC, and the initial feedback is that all sectors were on time, aircraft were clean, food was lip-smacking superb, and most of all the leg-room on the B-747 was much better in economy than in SQ and BA.
