Indian aviation industry on shaky grounds
Permalink Closed

The Jet-Sahara deal may have been between two airlines but the entire episode has once again raised several important questions about the Indian aviation industry.

With an annual growth rate of 26 per cent, Indian skies witnessed a revolution last year.

Perhaps, the growth trend prompted Jet Airways Chief Naresh Goyal to buy out Air Sahara and create an airline that would have few parallels across the world.

But after the Rs 2300 crore Jet-Sahara deal fell through, many are now asking: could this be the end of India's great leap into the open skies? Will India witness a replay of 1995 when airlines like Modiluft and Damania shut down almost overnight?

The coming months will see a lot of correction & consolidation. As fuel prices skyrocket, we will see the smaller airlines fold up. Only those with deep pockets, good business sense and long term commitment will be able to survive.

Jet Airways will be able to continue in its position because of its substantial customer base and loyalty in the domestic market. It will try and gain a foothold in the ultra-competitive international market.

Air Sahara, if someone does not buy it soon, will surely fold up. The multi-million dollar Sahara group has a lot of other businesses to worry about.

Spicejet & GoAir - Its too early to talk about them as these are just a year old (Go Air is just 7-8 months old) However, if they are not careful they will be in trouble too.

Kingfisher - I think this will survive as Vijay Mallya has deep pockets and is slowly carving a niche for itself as a premium full service airline. It will be the Virgin Atlantic of India with attractive fares, attractive services and of course - attractive crew

IndiGo - well if the airline has ordered 100 A320s already - what can one say. We will have to wait and watch how they start off!!

Air Deccan - This is the big one. I think it will survive, but will have to stick to its model of a low-cost people friendly airline. However, it better start improving its brand image and earn the trust and respect of the travelling public - meaning get rid of delays and cancellations.

Not really! They plan to add only one aircraft per month. This means even their 10th-15th aircraft is not off the assembly line yet.

The 100th aircraft will take more than 5 years to arrive!! Things would have drastically changed by then......
