This Russain passenger jet proposal has been there for a long time.

HAL was supposed to have build the Yak series. But Russian passenger jets have this problem of reliability. No one is ready to be seen with a Russain passenger jet though the IL series was refitted with Rolls Royce engines in an attempt to appeal to the western market.

Even now, many of the old Soviet bloc countries and allies are getting rid of their Russain passenger fleets.

The Ilyushin Il-96M long range airliner and Il-96T freighter are modernised and stretched developments of the Il-96-300 equipped with western engines and avionics.

Compared with the Il-96-300 the Il-96M and -96T feature a host of improvements and incorporate much western technology. The most obvious change is the fuselage stretch taking max single class passenger accommodation back to over 350 (as on the Il-86). The longer fuselage also means that the Il-96M's vertical tail can be smaller. However perhaps most important of the changes are the Pratt & Whitney PW2337 turbofans giving greater fuel economy and reliability. The Il-96M also features Rockwell Collins avionics including a modern two crew six screen EFIS flightdeck.

Oh leave them alone! They havent even got their act right as far as the LCA is concerned. Let them focus on producing the LCA before it gets obsolete

As far as the passenger jet is concerned, its better if they obtain tech transfer from some-one like ATR to produce turbo-props for starters before moving on to bigger jets.

Yes, it was by one of the news agencies PTI. There is no link but i have the article here.

HAL India elbowed out of Russian Regional Jet

Mumbai, Jun 25 (PTI) Public sector Hindustan Aeronautics Ltd has shelved its plans of investing in international consortium for building passenger jets following opposition by some partners to contract out aircraft development works to the country. The consortium, christened Russian Regional Jet, plans to build passenger jets with a seating capacity of 60, 75 and 95.

"We wanted to join the consortium as a risk partner. We were ready for investment to the tune of USD 100 million. But if after all this, some development works cannot be done in India then we think, its not worth such a huge investment," highly placed sources in the Bangalore-based defence aeronautics behemoth told PTI.

This was the first attempt by the public sector undertaking to join the fast-growing and increasingly crowded civilian airplane manufacturing sector. On top of that, sources said, there was not much clarity about the market and valuation. "We don't have a clear idea about the market and partners in the project. And we believe competing with the existing players like EMbraer and Bombardier would be very tough as they are already established players in the regional passenger airplane sector," sources said.

As per the original plan, the leading consortium partner, Sukhoi would design the aircraft, which will be powered by a SaM 146 engine, developed by French aeroengine major Snecma Moteurs and its Russian counterpart NPO Saturn. Toulouse- based Thales will provide avionics while Boeing will manufacture the body and take care of the certification.

Happy reading
