More about Indigo's promoters.

One of the main promoters is one Rakesh Gangwal, who was the president or CEO of American Airlines in the early 90s. At that time Rono Dutta was his counterpart in United Airlines. (Strange that his name is not figuring in the news about Sahara. He must have left).
Incidentally Gangwal is from IIT-Kanpur (a couple of years ahead of me) and Dutta is from IIT-Kharagpur.
(Note: United and American were at that time the two largest US-based airlines. Next in line were Northwest, Delta, Continental and US Air. Things might have changed since then)

Low-cost IndiGo to start operations Aug 4
Thursday, July 13th, 2006

India Press Release Distribution

New Delhi - IndiGo, the latest entrant to India’s low-cost airline industry, Thursday said it will begin operations from Aug 4 and will fly to several cities from the national capital.

The first flight from here to Guwahati and onward to Imphal will start Aug 4, while the service to Bangalore will start Aug 10, said the airline promoted by the Delhi-based travel-trade firm, InterGlobe Enterprises.

Other cities that will be added to the schedule include Pune (Aug 10), Chennai (Sep 20), Kolkata (Aug 20) and Hyderabad (Sep 20).

‘IndiGo is all about bringing our customers fares that are always affordable, with a service that is always reliable,’ said Bruce Ashby, president and chief executive of IndiGo.

‘We have built an airline with simple rules and no-nonsense service. IndiGo will cater to the needs of the modern Indian traveller who does not want to waste time, money or energy in the process of travelling,’ he added.

The tariff for the service between here and Guwahati will start at Rs.2,549 and customers will have to pay Rs.3,249 and upward for a one-way fare to Bangalore. The starting fare is Rs.1,299 for Chennai and Rs.1,699 for Hyderabad.

Just as the mass resistance in the Indigo plantations in India helped the Quit India movement, maybe the aviation situation in India made Damania determined!!!

Is it a fashion for LCCs to paint their websites on the aircrafts

Even GoAir has done the same

It is no fashion as you mentioned but a very intelligent advertising of the website and the toll-free number by the airline. As most of the LCC bookings take place on the web it makes sense to let the people know about their website.

They have pretty good fares up for only the first 2 weeks after they start ops.

So we will have another airline doing BLR-Pune-DEL in addition to Spicejet> IS there really that much demand BLR-Pune or is it all DEL bound???

Also They are supposed to start a nonstop BLR-DEL flight from Aug 20th I believe, anyone know the details?

I have been on BLR-PNQ-DEL on Spice twice. The a/c almost empties at PNQ. It can be deduced that most passengers on this sector are BLR-PNQ and PNQ-DEL.
