Man foiled trying to hijack South Africa plane

JOHANNESBURG (Reuters) - A man, believed to be armed, tried to hijack a South African Airways (SAA) domestic flight on Saturday but was subdued before he could enter the cockpit, the airline said.

"It appears a passenger threatened a crew member with some sort of weapon demanding access to the cockpit," SAA spokeswoman Jacqui O'Sullivan said in a statement.

The incident occurred on a flight from Cape Town to Johannesburg. The plane turned back to Cape Town where a 21-year-old man was detained, police spokeswoman Bernadine Steyn told reporters.

A passenger on the plane told Reuters the man was believed to be a foreign national but the motive for his actions was unclear.

SAA and police gave no further details.

The security forces who stormed or boarded the plane and the crew have been criticised by many passengers.


Passengers say that the people who overpowered the hijacker and grabbed the weapon ( a syringe) were beaten up and abused.


The crew, the passengers say, just disappeared to the back of the aircraft.


Passengers may now file charges of assault against the security forces!!
