The BKK post said, quoting their Prime Minister Thaksin that the airport will be fully operational from 3am on 28th September, 2006.

Test runs will be done with pax on non-connecting domestic flights to new BKK airport from mid-July with full transport facilities available for those pax and also a certificate of being the first at Sv.bhoomi airport.

Thailand-New Airport Cheap fares for test flights at Bangkok’s new airport

BANGKOK, Thailand (AP) — Six Thai airlines are offering cut-price fares for flights on July 29 that will test the readiness of Bangkok’s new international airport, flag carrier Thai Airways International said.

The newly built Suvarnabhumi Airport is scheduled to open at the end of September, replacing Bangkok’s aging and overcrowded Don Muang airport.

Nok Air, Bangkok Airways, Thai AirAsia, Thai Airways International, Orient Thai Airlines and PB Air will be running test flights on a number of domestic routes, said Wasing Kittikul, a spokesman for Thai Airways.

Travelers eager to compare the two airports can take a 30-minute flight from Don Muang to Suvarnabhumi for 999 baht (US$26; euro20).

For resort destinations like Phuket and Chiang Mai, one-way economy class tickets will cost 1,999 baht (US$52; euro40); and round-trip tickets 3,999 baht (US$104; euro83).

Ticket sales open July 1.

Officials said last month that workers were rushing to fix runway cracks, a leaking roof and other problems ahead of the new airport’s scheduled opening Sept. 28.

 But it seems they would be flying their 737-800,s whenever they start flying instead of using some widebody jet.

 The would start flying to Suvarnabhoomi Airport and not Don Muang...

 Guys one quick question any clue how much is the departure tax at the BKK airport??

Thailand-Airport Link Cracks found in supports for elevated rail link to Bangkok’s new airport BANGKOK, Thailand

Cracks have been found in 13 concrete supports for an elevated rail track linking Bangkok to the city’s soon-to-opened new international airport, and at least two of the structures must be dismantled, an official said Monday.

Transport Minister Pongsak Raktapongpaisal said that once the two pylons are taken apart and analyzed, inspectors will decide if all the cracked ones can be repaired, or need to be rebuilt.

The news is another blow for Suvarnabhumi Airport, which is scheduled to open in September and has been tarnished by numerous corruption scandals, long delays and other woes — including a fire that swept through a catering hall in January, killing a construction worker.

The 30 billion baht (US$783 million; euro627 million) rail link was due to begin operation in mid-2008. The minister did not say if the pylon cracks would delay the opening.

Suvarnabhumi Airport is supposed to accommodate up to 45 million passengers a year and take over much of the traffic from Bangkok’s aging, overcrowded Don Muang international airport.

A PB Air pilot panicked while descending into Suvarnabhumi airport for a test flight on July 29 when a warning signal flashed up saying he was landing on ground where no airport existed. On the same flight, the pilot also observed that a 12-storey building at King Mongkut's Institute of Technology, Lat Krabang campus, with a telecom antenna on top, could present an obstacle for landings and take-offs, particularly for pilots unfamiliar with the area.

These flight problems have emerged from test commercial flights as Bangkok's 125-billion-baht new airport gears up for its full opening on Sept 28.

The first case turned out to be a false alarm because data about the airport was not present in the computer on board the narrow-bodied Brazilian-made Embraer 145 LR jet, according to aviation sources.

Some jetliners do not yet have the airport's information downloaded on board to assist smooth passage.

It was as unclear whether the Aviation Department had advised the International Civil Aviation Organisation (ICAO), the UN agency promoting safety in international civil aviation, to ask aircraft makers to install Suvarnabhumi airport's data on board.

The department told local airline executives it did pass on the advice.

Other airlines which took part in the July 29 flights _ Thai Airways International, Bangkok Airways, Thai AirAsia, One-Two-Go and Nok Air _ probably relied on their pilots' skill to fly in and out of Suvarnabhumi.

Sources said PB Air asked aircraft manufacturer Embraer about the absence of Suvarnabhumi's information and was told the data was not there because the airport had not opened yet.

Airport information on board aircraft is normally updated every 28 days.

PB Air has reported the two cases to the Aviation Department.

Department director-general Chaisak Angkasuwan insisted the height of the building at King Mongkut campus is within allowable limits. It would not have to be demolished. The institute had been asked to shorten the antennae, put red and white warning signs on the upper floors, and install flashing warning lights.
