Blue Dart sets up back-up technology hub in Bangalore

Bangalore, Aug 17 (UNI) Courier and air express package distribution company Blue Dart has set up a back-up technology hub in Bangalore as part of its Business Contingency and Continuity Plan (BCCP).

The BCCP is aimed towards ensuring that all centralised applications and the web interface for customers are made seamlessly available to them, senior company executives told a news conference here today.

Through this, Bangalore will serve as the standby site with real time switchover in the event of any eventuality at the company’s Mumbai headquarters, which hosts the entire centralised operations and the Bluedart.com website, they said.

The company’s Senior Vice-President, South II Region, Gopinath Menon said technology is a critical component in the company’s distribution and logistics for connectivity, control and ensuring a sophisticated decision support tool.

‘‘Our BCCP is part of our Rs 25 crore investment, excluding aviation services, we had earmarked this year,’’ Menon said.

‘‘We have selected Bangalore because it is in a different seismological area from Mumbai and is considered to be the IT capital of the country.’’

Wonder what Air India is going to do as its entire new fleet is getting Connexion in for every seat.

But Boeing has said it will support the programme.

Amisha threatens Air-India staffer; complaint lodged

 Mumbai, Aug 19 (UNI)

An Air India staffer has lodged a complaint with police against Bollywood actor Amisha Patel after she allegedly verbally abused a staffer on the issue of upgrading her friend’s ticket, police said today.

Amisha and her friend had booked tickets on an Air India flight for the US for yesterday when she allegedly lost her cool after the check-in staff agreed to upgrade her ticket from business class to first class but refused to do the same for her friend, travelling with her.

An enraged Amisha is alleged to have verbally abused the check-in staffer and threatened to hit her, they said.

Later the actor and her friend proceeded for the US by the same flight, sources said.

Senior Inspector Chandrakant Chauhan of Sahar police station told PTI today that a non-cognizable complaint by the Air India staffer was registered yesterday.

‘‘We may question Amisha as and when she returns from abroad,’’ Chauhan said.

Such incidents involving arguments between VIP travellers and airline employees are on the rise, industry sources said.
Last year, cricketer Harbhajan Singh had a verbal conflict with an airport security official when the metal detector made a beep sound during a security check at the Bangalore airport.
Harbhajan had allegedly indulged in an argument with the Central Industrial Security Force official, saying he was a VIP traveller and such checkings should be done away for them.
Earlier, South Indian film actress Simran had allegedly abused officials at the Chennai airport after she was asked to proceed for a security check.
Airline officials said they were unable to take any action against VIPs.
‘‘If it’s a mistake on the part of our employee, we can take action. But currently there is no rule enabling us to take action against a traveller,’’ an Air India official said.

Alaska Airlines jet diverted to Seattle after cabin pressure problem; 14 treated

SEATTLE, Aug 19 (UNI)

An Alaska Airlines jetliner was diverted to Seattle after the plane’s cabin failed to pressurize normally during a flight from Canada, an airline spokeswoman said.

The Boeing 737 landed safely Friday at Seattle-Tacoma International Airport, where medics treated 10 passengers and three crew members complaining of ear and sinus pain, airline spokeswoman Amanda Tobin Bielawski said.

She initially said they required no other treatment but later said the airline had learned four people were taken to a hospital. She did not have immediate details on their condition.

‘‘There’s nothing at this point to suggest that this is anything other than an isolated incident,’’ Bielawski said.

An altitude warning alarm sounded when Flight 690 reached 33,000 feet (9,900 meters), indicating the air pressure in the cabin was lower than it should be, spokeswoman Caroline Boren said.

The plane’s oxygen masks did not deploy because the situation was not severe enough to trigger them, Bielawski said.

The Seattle-based airline brought in another plane, which took the 122 passengers the rest of the way to San Francisco. The original flight had taken off from Vancouver, British Columbia.

Earlier this year, Alaska ordered a fleet-wide inspection of its planes’ air pressure systems after a series of similar cabin pressure problems. The company said no systemwide problems were found.

NA Boeing makes an emergency landing in New Delhi

A Boeing aircraft of Nepal Airlines heading for Dubai with 190 passengers made an emergency landing at New Delhi on Wednesday after a technical snag in one of its engines.

The 757 Boeing diverted to New Delhi 30 minutes after take-off after the pilots of the plane detected overheating in its left engine.

First they tried to cool the engine by lessening the power. However, they decided to turn off the engine after their attempt failed, and landed in New Delhi on one engine, reports quoted a source at the airlines as saying.

A team of technicians including in-flight engineer B N Jha tried to fix the problem.

Following the emergency landing at New Delhi, the international flight schedules of NAC, which now has only one Boeing 757 in operation, has been badly affected.

According to sources, the pilots had been complaining about the overheating problem since the last two weeks but concerned engineers had been granting flight permission citing the problem as normal. nepalnews.com pb Aug 18 06

NAC Boeing makes emergency landing
Kantipur Report

KATHMANDU, Aug 18 - A Boeing aircraft of Nepal Airlines heading for Dubai with 190 passengers on Wednesday made an emergency landing at New Delhi due to a serious technical problem in one of its engine.

The Boeing 757 airliner, which left Tribhuvan International Airport at 2200, was compelled to divert to New Delhi after the pilots of the plane detected overheating in its left engine.

An airline source informed that the engine was recently overhauled in Brunei some three months ago and has flown just eleven hundred hours. Normally, an engine functions without problems for 5,000 to 6,000 hours after an overhaul.

"The pilots had no option but to divert to New Delhi as they continuously received overheating alarm from the engine 30 minutes after take-off.

First they tried to cool the engine by lessening the power. However, they decided to turn off the engine after their attempt failed, and landed in New Delhi on one engine.

After making a safe landing, in-flight engineer B N Jha tried to fix the problem. NAC dispatched a group of four engineers to assist engineer Jha.

The aircraft may be grounded for some days if the engine problem is complicated, said the source. However, a senior official of the NAC said the aircraft will fly to Dubai after  the problem is fixed.

Following the emergency landing at New Delhi, the international flight schedules of NAC, which now has only one Boeing 757 in operation, has been badly affected.  The source claimed that the pilots had been complaining about the overheating problem since last two weeks. However, concerned engineers had been granting flight permission citing the problem as normal.

Repentant Passenger Returns Airline Blanket

A letter of apology to Korean Airlines that accompanied a blanket a passenger took off the aircraft.

Korean Air officials were surprised when they found that a thick pink envelope delivered to the carrier’s center at Incheon International Airport contained a checkered blanket of the kind provided to passengers on long-haul flights together with a letter. The sender was a man identified as Min from Cheongju, who recently traveled aboard Korean Air from Incheon to the Philippines and back.
On getting off the plane, Min wrote, he saw many passengers stuffing the blankets into their bags or simply carrying them off the plane and, assuming they were free, did the same. But once home, Min opened the wrapping and found a notice saying the blanket was the property of Korean Air. Feeling guilty, he decided to return it and apologize.

"The other people who were taking the blankets with them said it was included in the price of the ticket, so I took mine as well. I am very sorry," Min wrote. "Next time I have an opportunity, I will again fly Korean Air. Fly safely." Indeed, a message attached to the blanket reads, "PLEASE LEAVE ON THE SEAT AFTER USE KOREAN AIR."

However, each year more of the blankets go missing as many passengers either do not know or do not care. In 2001, 176,000 were lost, soaring to 300,000 in 2005, costing hundreds of millions of won. The blankets are light, warm, easy to carry and made from pure wool --making them a prime target for travelers who intend to go backpacking.

From time to time, there are passengers like Min who repent and return the blankets, but airline staff cannot check every passenger as they leave the plane. An airline staffer says, "When I was working in America, we had one Korean-American passenger whose child had left with the blanket on a trip back from Korea, but the woman returned it saying that was a way to educate her child.” He added, "It’s easy to say that it’s just one blanket, but we are grateful for the letter."

Claws back to second spot in July

ATREYEE DEV ROY

NEW DELHI, AUG 21:  Indian Airlines is back as the second largest domestic carrier in the country, overtaking low-cost carrier Air Deccan, by just about a whisker.
According to the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) figures for July, Indian Airlines’ market share dipped 0.3% in that month to 20.5% from 20.8% in June. Air Deccan, however, lost 1% to land at 20.2% in July. The Jet Airways share, too, fell 0.6%, but it maintained its leadership with a market share of 31.7% in July.

Industry midgets have started to bite slices off the Indian aviation pie. The market share of Kingfisher Airlines and Go Air increased from 7.9% and 2.4%, respectively, in June to 8.2% and 2.8%, in July.

Though full service carriers are still the biggest players in the market, their share has shrunk from 76.4% in January to 60.3% in June. Indian Airlines’ market share has fallen from 25% to 20.8% during the period. Air Deccan’s has jumped to 21.2% in June from 13.3% in January.

In terms of load (seat) factor, SpiceJet led the industry with 78%, followed by Air Deccan, which registered a load factor of 74.2%.

SpiceJet and Air Deccan were the only two carriers, which managed a load factor of over 70% during the lean season, with almost a 10% margin over Jet, third largest in terms of load factor. Jet recorded a seat factor of 65.6%, closely followed by Air Sahara at 64.5%.

However, most of the airlines registered a decline in load due to heavy monsoon in the industrially important western part of the country.

Protest Outside Patna Airport against Air Deccan

Patna: August 24, 2006

Protest outside Patna Airport. Photo by Shashi UttamDozens of protestors outside Patna's Jai Prakash Narayan International Airport on Wednesday, chanted slogans against the Air Deccan and demanded liquidation of the company after the airline dropped a passenger on the runway minutes before taking off for Delhi.

According to the airline's report filed with the Gardanibagh police, a passenger who was identified as Satya Nand, boarded the plane in an inebriated condition. He also misbehaved with some passengers after which the pilot ordered him to de-board the plane.

Protest outside Patna Airport. Photo by Shashi UttamWhen the passenger refused to simmer down and comply with the pilot's order, airline staff physically picked him up and left on the runway after which the aircraft took off.

Demanding actions against the airline, the protestors blocked the parking area outside the airport and threatened to take up the matter in a court of law. They also demanded sacking of Union Civil Aviation Minister Prafulla Patel.

They also filed an FIR against the Deccan Air at Gardanibagh police station.

For those who can't read Hindi - the banner in the picture above reads:

"Shut down Air Deccan.
Praful Patel should resign.
Corruption will not be allowed to continue"

I like the way that Patna has chosen to include PP in their (completely unfounded) complaints against DN. If you don't like DN, please don't fly that airline, but there's no one who's going to tolerate a misbehaving drunk on board.

Even i feel the same... May be they could have brought the aircraft back to the bay and then de-boarded the passenger but this is just ridiculous...

Hope next time they dont put up an article that DN threw a pax from the air!!!

Kerala ready for another airport proposed by expatriates

Dubai, Aug 27 (UNI)

Kerala has agreed to a proposal by expatriates to build an airport at Edayaranmula in central Kerala under a public limited company that would run it on the lines of the Nedumbaserry international airport near Kochi.

The Friends of Thiruvalla (Fota) organisation, which has taken the lead in the airport project, has joined hands with other NRI groups including Fokana, Mount Zion Group and Fota chapters in Bahrain, Kuwait and the UAE.

The Mount Zion Group has acquired 400 acres of land at Edayaranmula, about 10 km from Thiruvalla, to build the airport, the organisation’s Qatar chapter said in a statement.

Fota (Qatar chapter) has submitted a memorandum to Kerala Chief Minister V S Achuthanandan, seeking allotment of 50 acres of land that once belonged to the now defunct Pamba Sugar Factory for its development activities.

Kerala has gone mad. There will be five airports now all within 20/30 mins of each other.

French journalist assaulted in Chennai airport

Chennai, Aug 30 (UNI)

A 38-year-old journalist from France was allegedly assualted by a group of CISF personnel at the Anna International airport here, following an altercation in the wee hours of today.

The scuffle took place when the CISF personnel objected to smoking by Serjugi Geizaulks, representing ’LEMOND’ daily in France.

Airport sources said Geizaulks and his wife Flora came to the airport to catch the Frankfurt-bound Lufthansa flight. After completing the security and other travel formalities, the couple proceeded to the prohibited area on way to board the plane. The journalist lit a cigarette and started smoking to which the CISF personnel manning the entrance gate objected, resulting in a wordy duel leading to a scuffle.

While Geizaulks claimed that the securitymen assualted him severely in which he sustained bruises on his face, the CISF personnel countered saying that the Journalist first attacked them.

However, the security personnel overpowered, tied the hands of Geizaulks and kept him in the CISF post. Later, they informed the matter to the French Consulate in Pondicherry.

Meanwhile, the flight left for Frankfurt.

Ms Kausaly Devi of the Consulate of France, Pondicherry rushed here and held discussion with the airport authorities to settle the matter amicably.

The sources said efforts were on to bring about a compromise to free the journalist and to ensure that the couple were send back to Frankfurt by the Lufthansa flight tomorrow.
