The visually-impaired doctor in alternative medicine, who alleged ill-treatment by Kingfisher Airlines at the Santacruz airport on August 3

Do we know what was the "ill-treatment" meted out to this doctor? Or is this just another semi-celebrity demanding extra previliges?

Caught in traffic? Now fly to airport.

By IBNlive.com Sunday September 10, 12:37 PM Mumbai:

Ever missed your flight on account of rush hour traffic? Well, you need not worry anymore. If Kingfisher Airlines has its way, business class passengers in Mumbai and Bangalore could soon be on their way to the airport on a helicopter.

A typical scene on Mumbai roads is where traffic crawls more often than it moves. And even though you might be in a hurry, there's no option but to grin and bear it.

During peak hours getting to the airport from Nariman Point in Mumbai could take the same amount of time as flying from Mumbai to Kolkata — two hours and 20 minutes.

To tide over this problem Kingfisher Airlines plans to launch helicopter services in Mumbai and Bangalore for its business class, Kingfisher First, passengers.

"The distance and the time taken to the airport sometimes exceeds the flight time. So I think our guests on Kingfisher First, and maybe Kingfisher Class, will also appreciate the helicopter service, which would save a lot of time and hassle. Yes, we're seriously working on that," CEO and Chairman, Kingfisher Airlines, Vijay Mallya said.

The airline is in talks with the Government-owned Pawan Hans and European helicopter maker, Eurocopter.

Wonder if he wants to outdo Goyal.....or what's the catch.

What remains to be seen is which corporate would authorise a spending of Rs.5000 from Nariman Point to Santacruz during peaktime (When the traffic is actually south bound) to fuel growth of ITs plans

Talking about Mallya, he was just giving it back to Prabhu Chawla and another editor in the India Today Interview on Headlines Today (Sept. 10, 2006). Made them look like a bunch of fools. The only time he flared up was when Chawla asked him why Kingfisher is still making losses.

Told Chawla indirectly that he knew nothing about the airline business.

Man insists on getting off a plane ready for take off, and gets his way, after receiving a call from suicidal ladylove

Naveeta Singh

This is the stuff Bollywood climaxes are made of -- action, drama, emotion and a happy ending.

A middle-aged man, on his way to take up a job in Doha, stopped the Air-India 875 Bombay-Doha-Bahrain flight just minutes before take off on Sunday after receiving a call from his ladylove threatening to commit suicide if he left her alone. All hell broke loose on board the aircraft as Peter Fernandes, 35, a resident of Mumbai, unfastened his seat-belt, stood up and said he wanted to get off the plane. Upon being told by the crew that it was not possible as the aircraft was by then taxing towards the runway, he first pleaded he was not feeling well. But when the stewards told him he would be provided medical assistance once the aircraft was airborne and that he should return to his seat, he became violent and threatened to kill himself if he was not allowed to disembark and reunited with his girlfriend, who, he said, was still waiting for him at the airport.

A source, who was on the eventful flight, told Mumbai Mirror that Fernandes “kept pleading that it was a matter of his lover’s life as she would kill herself if he did not return to her. It was high drama...the staff looked rattled and quite understandably so.”

The crew then consulted the aircraft’s commander and it was decided to abort the flight and take the plane back to the bay where Fernandes was offloaded. He, however, could not return to his love immediately as he was detained by the A-I staff till the fight, which was delayed by 50 minutes, reached Bahrain, a journey of over two-and-a-half hours.

A-I officials refused to divulge the girl’s identity, but Central Industrial Security Force officials in charge of airport security said the couple had looked very much in love before Fernandes entered Terminal 2C around 4 pm.

Another passenger on board the flight said Fernandes entered the plane looking quite normal and settled down in his seat quietly. “But then he got this call on his cell as the plane was taxing which got him all disturbed,” he said.

Sources said Fernandes was leaving on a work contract that would have kept him away in Doha for two years, a situation his lover was obviously not willing to accept.

Sanjay Prakash, senior commandant, CISF, said: “I have heard of such an incident on Sunday. Air-India offloaded a passenger. But they have not informed us.”

Vira International, a recruitment agency at Andheri, which had booked the ticket for Fernandes, said he was to take up the job of a chef at Diplomatic Club, Ministry of Interiors, Doha-Qatar. “He told us he could not leave on Sunday due to personal reasons. He is now leaving on Thursday,” said Akbar Rajan, chairman, Vira International.

Budget carriers face fear factor

BANGALORE: Dutch football star Dennis Bergkamp never liked the idea of flying. The thought of boarding an aircraft often reduced him to jelly and he preferred to travel across Europe by road.

In India too, low cost carriers are facing the same issue as a sizeable chunk of people, who have never flown before, are keeping away from small planes like ATRs due to fear factor. Even, doling out Re 1 and Rs 3 tickets may not be enough to attract them.

Further market expansion is linked to this fear syndrome. About 35-40% of travellers in low-cost carriers like Air Deccan, Spicejet and IndiGo are first-time flyers.

Analysts say load factor of low-cost carriers could improve by another 10% if this scare of boarding smaller aircraft is rooted out.

There have been occasions when certain first time flyers scream as the airline hits a pocket of turbulence. The scared lot then pass on the 'knowledge' to his/her family members that flying an airline is indeed a dangerous activity.

"The Indian aviation sector requires a tectonic shift in consumer behaviour,"says Air Deccan MD GR Gopinath. "While a lot of them are excited about flying, there are quite a number of people who are staying away. We need to spread awareness that flying is the safest mode of travel."

Analysts say about 22-25% of the people who fly low-cost airlines are from the rural sector. Many of them are flying to meet their children in cities who have sent them e-tickets.

"There are some who link low-cost carriers with lack of safety,"says aviation consultant Praveen Paul. "That's unfortunate, but that's the case. Some people think that paying a low fare could mean greater risks."

Low-cost carriers like Air Deccan believe that the issue will take some time to settle.

"When mobile phones were first introduced in India, many did not think it will take off. Same is the case with flying,"says Gopinath.

There are people who have taken a low-cost flight before ever experiencing a train. "Let's take a state like Rajasthan,"says Paul. "There are many there who have flown before travelling on rail. I can imagine their feeling."

Do flight attendant schools give wings to aspirants’ dreams?

Apurva

Vadodara, September 25: NAMASKAR, welcome to the new high-flying career option of aviation hospitality. Taking off from Vadodara will be students who are either disillusioned with the saturation in Engineering or Medicine or are confused about their careers.

Flight attendant training academies that have sprouted in the city are promising students the sky with job prospects as airline cabin crew or ground staff. However, education experts are doubtful whether these training academies really provide a new career path or are merely taking advantage of a relatively virgin education market in Vadodara. Since August this year, about three new flight attendant academies have been launched in Vadodara, taking the total to six, and with one or two more slated to open soon. According to Priyanka Khosla of Flying Cats Air Hostess Academy, the aviation sector is picking up and there is a constant demand for personnel, which will increase in the near future. But the spurt seems dubious, especially since the city is small and Vadodara airport boasts of only seven flights a day, with only two airlines—Jet Airways and Indian—operating out of here.

 Bride Groom  18 - 24 25 - 30 31 - 35 36 - 45 46 - 50 50+
Hindu - Assamese - Bengali - Gujarati - Hindi - Kannada - Malayalam - Marathi - Marwari - Oriya - Punjabi - Sindhi - Tamil - Telugu Muslim Christian Sikh Parsi Jain Buddhist Jewish Other No Religion Spiritual

Pervez Damania, executive director of Kingfisher Airlines, who was here in August to inaugurate the Flying Cats academy, tried to throw some light on why these academies are headed to Vadodara.

‘‘There will be a demand in Vadodara since airline companies are running out of parking space in bigger cities like Delhi and Mumbai. So they will have to start parking their aircraft here which will lead to an increase in the air traffic in Vadodara,’’ he said. However, he added that this would happen sometime in the future. What’s interesting, however, is that the academies have claimed in their advertisements that there are at least 15,000 vacancies in the aviation hospitality sector in the country. But there is no guarantee that all these jobs will be available to students from Vadodara. Sapna Gupta from the Air Hostess Academy (AHA) which opened last week put it like this, ‘‘There are at least 30 such academies in Delhi and Mumbai and about 20 in Chandigarh.’’ But, Damania had also said, ‘‘Such institutions do not guarantee placements but increase the students’ chances of entering the aviation sector.’’

Then there are also those who join these academies not with the intention of working with an airline, but only for personality development. Vijay, who has recently joined a flight attendant school, is just 16 and has cleared the SSC exams. He said that he has also enrolled at a college in Makarpura for a diploma in electrical engineering. When asked why he wanted to do the aviation hospitality course, he replied, ‘‘My father has a big business and I need to learn about speaking to people, dressing appropriately and addressing people at gatherings. I am not here to get a job in the aviation hospitality sector.’’

But other students with stars in their eyes don’t mind forking out approximately Rs 1 lakh for a year-long course. Arun Bharadwaj, who is pursuing an MBA, has also joined a flight attendant training school in the meantime. When asked if he was confident about getting a job, Bharadwaj said he had checked up on the internet about vacancies in the hospitality sector and was satisfied with his research. He claims that he read an online article according to which there were 50,000 vacancies in the aviation sector at present.

About placements, he said, ‘‘We were told that if we had the skill set, then there is no need for placements. I believe that and I believe I have the skill set to get myself a job.’’

However, Chirag Patel who works as a groundstaff personnel with an airline, tells a different story. According to him, the training academies give information about vacancies and leave it at that. Patel said, ‘‘The training academies do give students a skill set, but all airlines have their own training module for fresh recruits. So anybody can apply for a job without any training.’’ He also said that there were not many vacancies in this sector since the attrition rate is very low. ‘‘Nobody who gets a salary of Rs 20,000 and above plus free airline tickets wants to give up the job,’’ he said.

A sociology professor from MS University, who did not want to be named, said that many students are attracted to this profession because of the glamour quotient. He also said that a market like this needs people who can afford the high fees, and Vadodara’s middle-class fits the bill. He added that after Class 12 many students are confused and are willing to try something new and unexplored.

‘‘The growth of this sector here could also be because of the misconception that there are more people in Vadodara who can speak English than in any other city in Gujarat,’’ said the professor.

Cabin crew training venture

 New Delhi, Sep 26 (UNI)

Delhi-based EBS Aviation has forged a joint venture with British Columbia Institute of Technology (BCIT), Canada, to cabin crew aspirants.

‘‘Instruction in the field of aviation is dependent on foreign curriculum and is still at a nascent stage. The foreign instructors have a more hands-on approach,’’ Bhupender Chowdhri, President, EBS Aviation, told PTI today.

The aspiring airhostesses and instructors will get training from foreign instructors over three weeks beginning Novomber 1.

Students enrolling for the course will also get a St John’s first aid certification from BCIT Aerospace. They will also receive training to deal with emergency and cater to hospitality needs of different passengers.

Over the next five years, the aviation industy would need close to 10,000 cabin crew and 4,500 pilots.
