Fasten seatbelts, but stay in touch

NEW DELHI: Starting next year, domestic air travellers may be able to remain connected even during a flight. Airlines - led by Jet Airways and Kingfisher - are in talks to introduce an on-board mobile service on their flights which will enable travellers to use cellphones even when the aircraft is airborne.
Trials of this on-board service are expected to start on domestic routes in early 2007, sources told TOI.
"Negotiations are underway between the airlines and service providers like Arinc Inc to retrofit aircraft with the system which will enable travellers to converse on mobile phones, exchange text SMS and even be connected on the Internet during a flight," an airline source said.
Though details of the service are not available, sources pointed out that calls on-board are expected to priced at a premium over the normal on-ground rates.
The aircraft, sources said, will carry a mobile signal repeater which will transmit signals to a terrestrial system over frequencies that do not interfere with the cellular system. Since the repeater will be placed next to the passengers, the phones’ output power will be reduced to the lowest level possible, reducing interference with the aircraft's navigation system.
Several airlines across the globe have started offering in-flight Internet services and some have even permitted mobile phone use on-baord. But Indian regulations do not permit use of mobile phones once the aircraft door is closed.
I for one enjoy the 1-2hr of peaceful mobile-free time that I spend on a flight. Imagine this: You have had a long and tiring day. You board the plane hoping to catch a nice, quiet hour long nap. You just about fall asleep when suddenly a Himmesh Reshamiya number starts blaring from your neighbours cellphone & you kiss your nap goodbye!
not really... since knowing they with the satellite/internet systems to alleviate problems of intereference with communications and systems... i know the system will be under the crews control which will enable them to turn it on or off...
so when the crew decide its time for lights out... they wont leave the cell recpetor on.. to be fair to all passengers...
depends on how each airline deals with it
that said.. yes it will be annoying if the passenger lacks mobile etiquette.... but then again he'll have all the people at either sides, the fron and the back breathing down his neck if he decides to talk how they do on the Borivali and Andheri locals.. especially like the majority of the gutkha chewing stock market memorising Gujaratis camping in between Khar and Ville Parle.
