Indian Express Mumbai, May 11: KINGFISHER Airlines and Air Mauritius may soon sign an interline agreement to allow liquor baron Vijay Mallya’s carrier to ferry passengers from across its network for their onward journey to Mauritius.
Currently, Air Mauritius is the only carrier between India and the island nation and operates flights from Delhi, Mumbai and Chennai.
‘‘We are in the process of talks with Kingfisher Airlines to feed our gateways and it looks positive,’’ said Raj Beedassy, Area Manager (South Asian subcontinent and Middle East), Air Mauritius.
The two airlines began negotiations about a month ago and talks are expected to conclude by mid-June.
This would mean that a person travelling from Panjim to Mauritius would fly Kingfisher Airlines upto Mumbai and thereon travel with Air Mauritius.
The airlines are also exploring the possibility of a Special Pro-rate Agreement (SPA), which would translate into cheaper fares for passengers. If all goes well, tickets may cost 10-15 per cent less on the route.
The island nation’s carrier has such pacts with Air India, Indian, Jet Airways and Air Sahara. So why another partner? ‘‘We want our customers to have the freedom of choosing their domestic carrier as our flights operate only from Delhi, Mumbai and Chennai. Also, this helps us penetrate the market better,’’ said Beedassy.
The partnership would benefit passengers travelling to Mauritius from cities like Ahmedabad, Bangalore, Panjim and Kochi as Kingfisher Airline operates direct flights to the three metros on these routes.
Meanwhile, despite repeated attempts, Kingfisher officials were unavailable for comment.

Air Mauritius introduces two Airbus 340-300E in its fleet
Chennai, Sep 7 (UNI)
Air Mauritius India has introduced two brand new Airbus 340-300E to replace the Boeing aircrafts in its fleet.
The new aircraft would be used for operating daily flights between Mumbai and Mauritius, two weekly flights from Delhi and one weekly flight from Chennai.
Talking to reporters here last evening, Air Mauritius General Manager Raj Bhujohory and Mr Rajesh Bushgeet, Manager, Chennai and South India, said the flight would have 12 first class cocoon type seats, 33 business class seats and 264 economy class seats on each aircraft.
Stating that only 30,000 Indians were flying to Mauritius annually, Mr Bhujohory said injecting new flights would lead to increase in the flow of Indians.
’We are confident that by introducing extra aircraft the number of Indian tourists to our country will shoot up. By 2010 there would be 15 million travelling overseas compared to estimated eight million in 2006’’, he added.
Mr Bhujohory said by 2010, Air Mauritius was planning to introduce 14 flights in its fleet. ’We are planning an operation to Bangalore and have already obtained the traffic rights. ‘‘The airlines is also considering the possibility of connecting India and China via Chennai, he added.
On tourism promotion, Mr Bhujohory said nearly 52 per cent of people in Mauritius were Indians and people travelling from the sub-continent would not face any language problems.
‘‘We have also developed all the beaches to attract tourists and film makers’’, he said.
Mr Bhujohory said the Mauritian government’s decision to avoid the necessity of having a visa to fly into the island had increased the flow of tourists. The government was making efforts to remove other obstacles too.
The General Manager was keen to see that Kollywood movies to be shot in Mauritius. ‘‘At present only Bollywood film crews has been visiting our island frequently. We would like to invite film fraternity from South India to Mauritius for shooting, ’ he added.
On the business prospects the island offered, he said being a gateway to South Africa and with lot of concessions with European countries, there were plenty of opportunities for Indian businessmen to broaden their base if they setup establishments in Mauritius.
That's a large capacity increase over the current 767 services. Will MK be able to fill all these seats? Does anyone know how MK's doing on their India services?
