Airbus award for Indian Airlines

Indian Airlines has been awarded the A300 Operational Excellence Award for 2005 by aircraft manufacturer Airbus, in recognition of its “remarkable results in operating Airbus aircraft ”.

The award was presented to Indian Airlines Chairman and Managing Director Ms. Sushma Chawla in her office today by Airbus.  Also present was Mr. G. Satyanarayana, the airline’s Director Engineering.

Indian Airlines was the first operator in India to buy the Airbus aircraft when it purchased the wide body A300 in 1976 and even today has a dominating presence of Airbus aircraft in its 67-strong fleet.

The award recognizes operational excellence based on four key parameters :

  • The highest number of yearly operating hours versus the fleet average

  • The highest number of yearly take-offs versus the fleet average

  • The best average Operational Reliability versus the fleet average and,

  • The lowest delay duration versus the fleet average delay duration

Besides being designated through the above criteria, Airbus has also commended Indian Airlines for being a valuable customer, flying the A300 since 1976. At one time IA had as many as 14 A300 aircraft in operation.  Today, Indian Airlines still flies three A300s, with an Operational reliability of 98.9% .

Yes, this is a fairly old news item. Appeared in almost all the news dailies and Indian made sure there were posters announcing this at IA check-in counters at Mumbai airport.

I don't know whether to feel good or bad about this piece of statistic

Letting passengers know that they are flying in a really old aircraft is not something that is bound to draw appreciation from one and all....

Three are in operation, which won IA a certificate and medal from Airbus for being the "World's best A300 operator" --- 98.6% reliability.

Eight in total. Here's what happened to the rest -5.

Two were cannabilised for parts.

One crashed into a compound wall at Delhi when being towed to a bay from the hangar. It was damaged. This plane is now with Frankfinn Airhostess Academy as a trainer.

Prior to this, one was scrapped after it landed in a paddy field near Tirupati. On a flight from Chennai to Hyderabad but mid-way there was  problem with the flaps. It ran out of fuel as it was at low altitude and then did a weird route of flying upto Hyderabad, trying to land at Begumpet and Dindigul Air Force Base and then returning to Chennai.

While near Tirupati, it was low on fuel and the commander landed in a slushy paddy field on the Chennai to Kolkata Highway. The mud was so sticky that the Airbus was almost stuck to it like a fly on flypaper. Became a huge tourist attraction.

Was big news as Telugu actor Chiranjeevi, Telugu actress Vijayshanti, another Tamil actress and the then Tamil Nadu governor's daughter were on board. All passengers and the crew were given a lunch at the Raj Bhavan in Chennai. But IA top brass were not at all amused and the Commander was out. Two cabin crew suffered fractures and sprains.

The Airbus going from Hyderabad to Chennai saw this plane go down and alerted the Air Force who immediately rushed there.

Then the last one ... that great jet -- the unforgettable Kandahar hijack fame Airbus A300 --- was sold and scraped in the U.S.

Total=8

Wonder how Airbus gave IA this certificate considering some of these funny & some not so funny incidents that led to the A300s being destroyed or scrapped!!

Landing in a paddy field, bumping against the compound wall!! And they proudly say that IA is the best A300 operator!!!

Or is it a sarcastic award like the Razzies

This came at the time the Airbus-Air India battle was on after AI decided in favour of Boeing.

Probably a step to make sure Indian didn't have last minute worries about the 43-jet Airbus deal.

Just joking.

Indian deserve it. Operating three A300s (average age 23 years) at an optimum level is priaseworthy.

Looking at it objectively.

The technical strength of some of India's PSUs is admirable.

Indian Airlines Ltd. now has a total fleet strength of 73 aircraft --  48 Airbus  A320, five Airbus A319, three Airbus A300, 11 B737, four ATR and two Dorniers --- which connects as many as 52 domestic and 18 international destinations, mainly in the Gulf and South-East Asia.  To augment its capacity and upgrade its fleet, Indian has placed an order for 43 aircraft of the Airbus A320 family. Recently, it signed a Memorandum of Understanding with ICICI Bank for the pre-delivery payments of USD 145 million as part funding for the fleet.

When its new aircraft begin to arrive this year-end onwards, the airline is looking at expanding its horizons and offering more product upgrades to passengers.  In this direction, there are plans to offer distributed seat audio-visual entertainment including satellite television on its new fleet of aircraft, beginning mid-2007.

For the benefit of the air traveller, Indian has been offering some of the best deals in the industry.  Be it the Unchecked Fares, Easy Fares, Super Savers, Family Fares or Flyaways holiday packages, all have proved to be popular.  The airline’s tie-ups for co-brand cards like IA-Amex or the IA-ABN Amro have earned the customer special privileges.  Another passenger convenience offered is its 24 X 7 toll free telephone service on 1800-180-1407 -- a single window service for all information and reservation/ticketing.  The service is available in as many as 12 regional languages.

On the financial front, despite stiff competition and rising ATF prices, Indian has made an estimated net profit of Rs.70 cr. in 2005-06 and has made a projection of Rs.100 cr. net profit in the current fiscal.

The airline also announced the starting of a freighter hub at Nagpur recently.  The operations of this hub will be conducted by conversion of the existing B737 aircraft into freighters in a phased manner.

What do you find wrong or messy with it? Indian Airlines is doing well despite competition from the LCCs. In fact, after getting a taste of the pathetic service offered by the LCCs people prefer flying Jet or Indian...
