Staff Report

Dubai: Air India Express has announced three new destinations Mangalore, Amritsar and Delhi to meet the market demand.

Effective October 3, direct services will begin to these destinations.

The Mangalore flight will meet the long standing demand of passengers hailing from north Kerala and from north Karnataka.

The three-times-a-week service to the city of the Golden Temple, Amritsar, and onward to Delhi, will cater to the requirements of North Indians for a direct service at affordable fares.

Dubai will now be linked to six destinations by Air India Express, the budget carrier of India, namely Kozhikode, Kochi, Trivandrum, Mangalore, Amritsar and Delhi.

Dubai: Maiden Direct Flight to Mangalore to Go Full
Daijiworld News Network - Dubai

Dubai, Sep 19: This is an apt example to the entire Mangalorean diaspora that that how curiously, yet patiently Mangalore-bound  people have been long waiting for the direct flight.

On Friday, September 15 evening around 10.45 pm Daijiworld flashed the news about availability of on-line booking, and since then it took just less than 36 hours for the seats on the inaugural flight to be a total sell-out ! (Total 180 seats)

As this report is being filed, tickets of not only October 3, but also October 19 and 21 have been entirely booked.

"The response has been superb. People are simply waiting to see the first flight. Everywhere the people have been talking about the first flight," says an Air India Express official in Dubai while speaking to daijiworld.

"We never knew daijiworld to be such a powerful medium. It made our task easy. We are looking forward to servng Mangalore destination. Hope we will have a good beginning," he adds.

Currently on-line booking is opened until October 28. Booking for the winter session will be opened soon. There may be a change in the timing also.

It is very important for passengers who are flying Air India Express to note that all the flights will take off from Terminal 2, at Dubai International Airport.

Rajesh Sequeira, who took the lead in the direct flight mission has said, "Our responsibility does not end here. The operation should move smoothly and continuity is very important. However, our immediate goal is to see that all other Gulf countries too should be connected by direct flights or at least for the time being there should be convenient connecting flights. We will work in that direction once the Air India Express operation begins," he asserted.

Several travel agencies and related business houses are now lined up for encashing the opportunity of direct flight. One of city's noted travel house Caesar Travels has wasted no time to announcing free transport from Bajpe Airport to Udupi and Mangalore region for those who book the tickets through them. (Tel: 04-3599669 Irshad / Abbu)

There are others lined up with various offers. Even some travel houses are planning to offer holiday packages to Mangalore.

The current fare starts from Dhs 1208 including taxes (Return) which is quite affordable and it is expected to remain same for a longer period.

The inaugural flight is expected to take off at 2.10pm UAE time and expected to arrive at Mangalore airport at 7.10 pm IST.

I think there was a mention on the Mangalore-Dubai thread that inventory was uploaded only for October for that flight. Might it be that inventory is uploaded only till December for the MAA-SIN sector?

DUBAI: Air India Express (AIE), the low cost airline operated by Air India, will start flights to Bahrain next summer and not this October as was announced earlier.

"There is no question of AIE coming to Bahrain before the next summer season," Dubai-based Regional Director (Gulf) for Air India Sanjeev Talwar said.

He cited the shortage of aircraft and "diversion of planes to other lucrative routes" as the reason behind the move, according to a media report.

"As much as we would want more and more destinations to be covered by the budget arm of Air-India, this is not possible in the immediate future," Talwar said.

The airline was first expected to fly in to Bahrain in April last year when it was reported the first flight would land only in winter, the Gulf Daily News reported.

The load factor, indicating occupancy, of Air India Express flights from Kerala to Dubai and Abu Dhabi, among other destinations in the Gulf, was more than 90 per cent.

Flights from Delhi and Mumbai to the same destinations had reported less than 50 per cent load factor.

AIE began services last year, and flies to Dubai, Abu Dhabi, Muscat, and Salalah, from Kozhikode, Kochi, Thiruvananthapuram, Mumbai, Delhi, Amritsar and Mangalore.

Long felt need is met, Mangalore is international

Mangalore, Oct 3 (UNI)

The entire airport area at Bajpe wore a festive look when an international flight, carrying 185 passengers from Dubai, landed at the airport near here this evening.

The passengers were accorded a warm welcome by Civil Aviation Minister Praful Patel, Karnataka Deputy Chief Minister B S Yediyurappa and other dignitaries.

Speaking on the occasion, Mr Patel assured that the present thrice-a-week flight between Dubai and Mangalore would be converted into a daily service gradually.

He said there was no dearth of funds with the Centre to extend various facilities at the airports, provided the state governments worked in tandem. He urged the states to help the Centre by providing sufficient land required for airport activities to ensure inter-state connectivity as civil aviation, in keeping with the changing times, would be of a different kind in future. The Centre was ready to develop airports in tier-II cities like Belgaum, Hubli, Gulbarga and Mysore, he added.

Speaking after laying the foundation stone for the Rs 147 crore integral terminal building, Mr Patel said the Ministry had taken up upgradation of 35 airports in the next three to four years.
The first phase of the Bangalore International Airport was expected to be completed by 2008 and taking the growing demand into consideration, the Ministry had decided to take up work on the second phase simultaneously and complete by 2009 instead of the earlier plan of 2020. The Bellary airport would be developed with private participation, he said.
The Minister called upon the State Governments to spend atleast Rs 20 crore to Rs 30 crore per year for developing airports in their respective States.
Mr Yediyurappa assured that the coalition Government in the State was committed to provide all required facilities at State airports by releasing special grants. The Government was in the process of acquiring land for the Mangalore Special Economic Zone, which was expected to attract Rs one lakh crore investment. It was the earnest desire of the Government to divert all future investments to cities like Mangalore, Mysore, Belgaum, Hubli and Shimoga from Bangalore.
Efforts would also be made to get Prime Minister Manmohan Singh to Mangalore for laying the foundation stone for the SEZ, he added.
Mr V Tulasidas, Chairman and Executive Director of Air India Express, which commenced its international flight service to Mangalore today, said Air India had decided to increase its total flight service from the present 50 to 59 by the end of the month. The AIE had also planned to extend international flight service from Mangalore to other Gulf countries and South East Asian countries.
He said the response for the international flight service between Mangalore and Dubai was overwhelming.
Airports Authority of India (AAI) Chairman Dr K Ramalingam said the proposed new integrated terminal building at Bajpe airport, being constructed at an area of 18,220 sqmt, would have all modern amenities such as passenger boarding bridge, escalators, elevators, X-Bis and conveyor belts to meet ’IATA’ level of service ’B’. The new terminal would be completed in 24 months after award of work. It would have the capability to handle one million passengers per annum. The AAI had also entered into a memorandum of understanding with the Karnataka Government for development of Rs 69 crore Mysore airport, for which the Government had provided free land.

Dubai, Oct 4 (UNI)

Indian low-cost carrier Air India Express (AIE) is expecting an 85 per cent load factor on its three flights per week to Mangalore.

With regard to undertaking expedient works at Bangalore airport, he said that the phase 2 which was supposed to be completed in 2020 will be completed by 2009 as the air traffic is increasing with the passage of years. Already an MoU has been signed for the development of Mysore airport and moves are afoot to sign MoU with other places like Hassan.

Air India's low-cost carrier launches inaugural flight to Singapore

Air India's budget arm, Air India Express or AIE, launched its inaugural flight to Singapore on Sunday.

The first Indian low-cost carrier to fly to Changi, AIE will operate five weekly non-stop services between Singapore and Chennai in India.

AIE's average return fare can go as low as $600.

That is at least 25-50 percent lower than what is currently available on other full service carriers such as Jet Airways and Singapore Airlines.

The flight takes about 4 hours and includes free boxed meals and some in-flight entertainment.

Travel between Singapore and India is getting increasingly popular.

Just in the first nine months of this year, 1.5 million passengers travelled between the two countries.

That's an increase of 22 percent over the same period last year."

The Singapore-Chennai route also saw a 15 percent increase over the same period.

But Air India Express does not plan to just stop at Chennai.

It may consider places like Hyderabad and Bangalore, according to Air India's chairman, V Thulasidas.

But cities like Mumbai and Delhi are off-limits as these routes will be kept for the main Air India carrier.

For now, bookings are looking good for Air India Express.

Some of its flights on the Singapore-Chennai route over the next two weeks are more than 90 percent booked.

AIE hopes to increase the frequency of its flights from five times a week to daily, probably by year end. - CNA/ir

Changi Airport welcomes Air India Express
Monday, October 30, 2006
Singapore Changi Airport received the maiden flight of Air India Express (AIE) from Chennai. AIE is the first Indian low-cost carrier to operate to Singapore. Singapore is also the  airline’s first international destination in the Asia Pacific.

Passengers and crew onboard the flight were warmly welcomed by the High Commissioner of India to Singapore, His Excellency Alok Prasad, and Acting Director-General of Civil Aviation, Civil Aviation Authority of Singapore (CAAS), Mr Chiang Hai Eng.

For a start, AIE will operate 10 weekly flights between Singapore and Chennai from Changi Airport’s Terminal 1.

Speaking at the welcome ceremony, Mr Chiang said, “The launch of Air India Express’ service to Singapore is indeed very timely, as air traffic between India and Singapore has grown from strength to strength over recent years. In the first nine months of this year, total passenger movements between India and Singapore reached 1.5 million, a growth of an impressive 22%, compared to the same period in 2005. During the same period, passenger movements on the Chennai-Singapore sector also saw very strong growth of 15% year-on-year.”

Mr Chiang added, “With its low cost, low fare operating model, I am sure that the entry of Air India Express will stimulate even greater people flows between Singapore and Chennai, as well as other parts of South India.”

Singapore News // Monday, October 30, 2006

Cheaper flights to India

Christie Loh
christie@mediacorp.com.sg

More cheap flights to India could come Singapore's way, and fares could be as low as half the usual price.
.
Air India Express, the first Indian low-cost carrier to fly here may offer Hyderabad, Bangalore, and Trichi, on top of its current Chennai-Singapore service.
.
"It shouldn't take much time because the aircraft we ordered are on their way from November onwards," the airline's chairman Vasudevan Thulasidas said yesterday when asked about the timeframe.
.
He was speaking to reporters minutes before Air India Express' inaugural Chennai flight to Singapore landed at Changi Airport Terminal 1.
.
The 175-seater flight, which lasted three and a half hours, was more than 80-per-cent filled. The service frequency, set at five per week presently, will increase to seven, said Mr Thulasidas.
.
He added that the fares would be lower than a full service carrier's by as much as 50 per cent.
.
A check on Air India Express' website last night showed that one-way tickets for this week are priced at between $156 and $193.
.
Seats are assigned, and passengers will get a snack and a drink, Mr Thulasidas said. But don't expect to fly budget to India's other popular cities of Delhi and Mumbai.
.
These two routes, which "generate a lot of traffic for business class", will be "kept for" the low-cost carrier's parent company Air India, said Mr Thulasidas.
.
Singapore Airlines is the other full-service airline serving those two cities.
.
Air India Express is making use of Terminal 1, instead of the Budget Terminal, to allow easy passenger connections between itself and its parent company.
.
The budget airline's entry here comes as total passenger movements between Singapore and India grew 22 per cent to hit 1.5 million in the first nine months of this year.

The 2class AIX 737s will gradually be introduced on these routes. So you will have an LCC with J class!!
