Farnborough: Boeing looks set to enter 500-seat market, shifting 747-8 Intercontinental capacity closer to rival Airbus A380.

Capacity of 747-8i moves closer to rival Airbus A380
Boeing could reposition its 747-8 Intercontinental to bring the four-engined long-range widebody's passenger capacity to within 10% of the Airbus A380's standard three-class 555-seat capacity.
Initial studies of the stretched Boeing 747-8 Intercontinental appear to show the aircraft could seat almost 500 passengers and still make its provisional 14,800km (8,000nm) minimum range target, says the manufacturer.
The findings, which are yet to be ratified during ongoing trade studies, could satisfy the additional payload needs of several potential customers and for the first time put the 747-8 in a similar capacity bracket to the A380.
I seriously wonder how many carriers would want a 500 seater plane. These days the focus seems to be more on medium capacity and ultra long range (e.g. 777-200LR). Or is it just a ploy by Boeing to grab some business away from Airbus?

BA B744x2 with say 420+/- pax operating BOM-LHR, standard rev mngt practice to overbook by 20% to take in to acct no shows. However if consisitently they have pax showing up it makes sense to operate 2xB748 with 500 +/- to accomodate these pax rather than turn them away.
P2P is the way fwd, however as any 1 P2P builds up the eqpt has to be upgraded, B748 offers (allegedly)better performance than the B744. B773 are a good competitor to B744 but fall short of the B748 capacity.
The way air travel is evolving reflects most of human society. We prefer more and more to live away from mega cities due to their inherent safety, enviourment, transport problems. This makes alternative airports /cities attractive for transport /living. STN & LTN will attract more traffic from India in the years to come, so will Navi Mumbai airport and Reliance city near Delhi.
Yes there is strong market for mega airliners starting 2012, once the P2P are established using the B787,B772.
I gave the example of BA earlier, elaborating further, you must have surely read about their fleet renewal stories. Now if you look at BAs competitors on its 2 most lucrative routes you'll find they have placed orders for A380. As declared by Willie walsh India is BAs most lucrative route after US.
On the India route BAs major competitors are EK, LH & AF, all are A380 customers. Inspite of the fact that they don't offer non-stop it is a threat to BA due to CASK being low on A380. And in the case of EK it can dent BAs F class bookings due to probably thru A380 service from INDIA-LHR.
On the US routes it is VS, infact it is also growing into a threat on the INDIA sector. Now as you know VS has ordered 6 A380. They will deploy probably 4 on the US sector. If i am Mr BA i'll be doomed if they deploy the other 2 on INDIA sector.
So my option is to get the same aircraft or a similar aircraft, which is the B748.

Is it just me, or is the 777LR , 787 and 747-8 suddenly looking vulnerable?
SQ just went for the A350 in large droves as did some other aircraft. I only Boeing leads for the year, but SQ is the bluest of the blue chip airlines.
Next, SQ announced that they would NOT be getting rid of their A345. Another loss for the 772LR.
Finally, who has ordered a passenger version of the 747-8?
Thus, all of a sudden, despite the A380 troubles, Airbus isn't in that bad of shape.
Yeah but realistically do u think any airline is actually going to do that?
I guess time will tell
Exactly. Weight will be an issue.
But Virgin and Branson may be the first in this!
SQ will be unveiling an exact replica of its A380 cabin (may be a cabin trainer model) at Changi by September. Just to give passengers a feel of what its like.
