I like this thing about seeking divine intervention among indians.I remember doing the puja of AI first -400 VT-ESM, it was the guys from engg we had contributed for nariyal (coconut), garland and sweets .........it was all for a laugh
Mumbai, September 4, 2006 Air India is making efforts to procure a relief aircraft by Monday evening to ferry passengers of Los Angeles (LA)-bound flight AI-137 of September 2, from Delhi via Frankfurt, which had developed a technical snag prior take-off. Efforts are on to dispatch an aircraft from Mumbai so that it would be available for operation to Los Angeles. However, due to curfew time at European points, the aircraft would leave for LA only after midnight with all 290 passengers on board, AI said in a release here on Monday.
Due to peak season, all the aircraft in Air India's fleet were fully deployed and no alternate aircraft could be made available till now, the release said.
Efforts being made to transfer passengers to other airlines was proving to be difficult since it was peak season for westbound travelers and no airline had excess capacity to accommodate additional passengers, it said.
The technical problem arose due to a malfunction in the weather radar. Air India tried to locate this part locally and with other manufacturers but could not obtain one which satisfied the requirements, it said.
Meanwhile, passengers have been provided accommodation at Delhi and Frankfurt, the release added.
And the aircraft is:

are you sure?.... coz i dont really think so... part of the reason being... VT-AIM has not been figuring in the departure logs of AI137 for a long time now... and i even thought she's been spending extended time on the ground.... the only thing other than that would be if they have based her out of DEL..
AI137 ex BOM has been logged by all the other 744s quite often... but havent seen AIM in a long while
NDTV quoted a senior Air India official as saying the company was helpless as it was an old plane and that there was nothing they could do. Said it was the same jumbo that has been involved in a series of landing mishaps. "What's wrong with it now is a totally different part, the weather radar", was how the report ended.
Seems to be Sunderbans, without doubt. No other jumbo had such adventures.

That explains it! Wells Fargo Bank, this must have been used by them to carry bullion around, thus weakening the MLG?

Stranded passengers flown to Frankfurt New Delhi, Sept. 5 (PTI): After being stranded for over two days at Delhi Airport as an Air India aircraft could not be repaired, about 300 Air India passengers were today flown to Frankfurt and Los Angeles by a relief plane.
A Boeing 747-400 aircraft, which was flown in from Mumbai to carry the 290 passengers to their destinations, took off at 0200 hours today, an Air India spokesperson said, adding about 100 more passengers travelling to Frankfurt and Los Angeles were also accommodated in this flight.
The passengers were stranded at Delhi airport as the aircraft which was to carry them developed fault in its weather radar before take-off and the state-owned carrier could not manage to get spare equipment to repair it.
The flight, AI-137, was originally scheduled for departure on Saturday.
The delay was compounded by the lack of availability of aircraft as Air India's fleet was "fully deployed".
Efforts to transfer passengers on to other carriers also proved difficult as there was no excess capacity available due to the start of the peak season for westbound travellers.
saw the bird parked in the int'l bay with the nose cone removed. WIP i guess. BTW the 777 is still standing in bay 77(unmarked) wonder what's wrong with that one.

Normally the Airline would stock on the Part number type unit. However if not in stock.
If ordered on AOG basis the charge is Three times but spares arrive in 24hrs,else it takes 3days depending on the vendor location & spares stock status.

MEL
U mean AI does not stock spares......what i have heard that 9W often asks AI for help when it comes to spares (please guide and throw light)......
Each Aircraft requires a particular P/N item for use on that type aircraft. The same model Aircraft may not always use the common part no.Some units use a different part numbered item too.
Its not possible to stock up on all units.Thats where Parts pooling is handy.About 9W asking AI for spares. It would be a certain common B737NG spare probably.
Three emergency landing, malfunctioning radome and now a bird hit (on September 18 and confirmed by Mayank.)
Even then Air India has no choice but to hang on to this 747. '
The fleet scheduling is in a real mess also especially after the PM's recent foreign trip.

Bird hit AI flight makes emergency landing
New Delhi, Sep 18 (UNI)
An Air India (AI) plane bound for Frankfurt was forced to return here and make emergency landing today after a bird hit damaged its engine.
There were no injuries. The Indira Gandhi International airport went onto emergency footing as the flight AI-137 landed.
The airport has recently turned to wildlife agencies to help find a method to clear birds from the area. It is plagued by bird strikes because it is situated near a neighbourhood that has dozens of outdoor meat shops that attract the birds.
Also, inefficient garbage collection draws birds to the area.
