Multiple entry visas for China and India tourists

KUALA LUMPUR – The Malaysia government yesterday approved granting
one-year multiple entry visas for tourists from China and India, replacing current three-week single entry visas.

Home Affairs Minister Datuk Seri Radzi Sheikh Ahmad said now Chinese and Indian tourists have to renew their visas when re-entering Malaysia after their visits to Thailand and Singapore.

This discourages them from extending their stay in Malaysia.

good to hear that. Now Indian tourists and those avoiding law have an option besides BKK. . Besides that not sure if India has made reciprocal arrangements for Malaysians and those visiting that country.

An interesting fact is that Indian citizens can get a visa on arrival at KUL - if they already have a valid Singapore visa!

For Indians, visa on arrival scheme in Malaysia

Kuala Lumpur, Aug 10 (UNI)

Visitors from India and 22 other countries will now be able to get visas on arrival at the international airports in Malaysia from September one.

The tourists will have to pay 100 ringet for the single entry, which will be valid for one month.

This move aimed at providing a boost to the ’Visit Malaysia Year 2007’ involves only those arriving at international airports, Home Affairs Minister Radzi Sheikh Ahmad said.

Tourists entering the country through other checkpoints would, however, have to apply for their visas in their home countries.

‘‘The idea is to encourage them to come straight to Malaysia, to spend their money here first, instead of neighbouring countries,’’ Radzi was quoted by the New Straits Times as saying.

‘‘They can stay for one month and if they want to continue their stay, they will have to leave Malaysia and re-enter by paying another RM100,’’ Radzi said.

The arrangement will continue throughout next year and ‘‘for as long as it seems fit’’, he said.

Referring to a new ruling that employers and agents who were late in collecting their foreign workers would be fined, Radzi said the ministry would start enforcing this in ‘‘one or two weeks’ time’’. Such employers will be fined RM10 per hour.

This could be good news to hundreds of Indian workers who arrive in Malaysia only to find that their agent or employer not there at the airport to pick them up.

Employers are to collect their foreign workers within five hours upon arrival or pay the fine.

New step to help Indian workers

Kuala Lumpur, August 15, 2006 (UNI)

Malaysian Minister Samy Vellu has said that he was very sad to see Indian workers paying more than a lakh of rupees to agents who brought them to Malaysia and then disappeared sometimes even with the workers’ passports leaving them stranded with nowhere to go.

He said the Construction Labour Exchange Centre Berhad, (CLEC) a subsidiary of the Construction Industry Development Board (CIDB) has been mandated by the government to be the sole agency to recruit workers from India for all sectors in the country. The CLEC will open offices in Chennai and another at either Mumbai or New Delhi to facilitate the recruitment of Indian workers. The CIDB is involved in several projects in India. Workers from India in all sectors will go through the CLEC even if they were not involved in the construction industry. The local employer has to apply and let the agency know their requirements about the type and number of workers required. The CLEC would then advertise and conduct interviews at its offices in India before recruiting.

M'sian government to review visa-on-arrival due to abuse

Corinne Wan

KUALA LUMPUR – The Malaysian government may reconsider issuing visa-on-arrival for tourists due to abuse of the facility by some in overstaying in the country.

The VOA facility was introduced last September for tourists from 24 countries to boost arrivals for Visit Malaysia Year 2007. They just need to produce their passports and pay RM100 (US$28) for a one-month visa.

However almost 3,000 tourists on this visa overstayed since its introduction, said Home Affairs Minister Datuk Seri Radzi Sheikh Ahmad.

He revealed that the majority of those who overstayed were from India, China, Sri Lanka and Bangladesh. Smaller numbers are from Pakistan, Myanmar, Nepal, Congo and Nigeria.

Despite the problem Razi said the VOA would be continued but it would be reviewed at the same time.

Indians can buy Malaysian residential property: Abdullah

Chandigarh, Nov 21 (PTI) Consumers with disposable income will soon have another offshore opportunity as Indians can now buy residential property in Malaysia, a senior official said here today.

‘‘Malaysia - my second home programme’’ is promoted by the Government of Malaysia and allows people from all over the world who fulfil certain criteria to stay in Malaysia as long as possible on a social visit pass,’’ Tourism Malaysia Director Roslan Abdullah told reporters here.

Nature lovers could spend their life in this natural paradise initially for a period of ten years, which could be renewed further, he said.

Participants above the age of 50 years could either choose from, opening a fixed deposit account of Ringgit (RM) 150,000 or show proof of monthly off-shore income of Ringgit (RM) 10,000, such as pension scheme, he said.

After one year, the participants who fulfil the fixed deposit criteria could withdraw upto Ringgit (RM) 90,000 for investments, he added.

However, the minimum balance of Ringgit (RM) 60,000 would still be required to be maintained from the second year, Abdullah said.

Applicants below 50 years of age must prove a minimum fixed deposit of Ringgit (RM) 300,000 with the Malaysian financial institution.

After a period of one year, the participant could withdraw upto Ringgit (RM) 240,000 for approved expenses relating to property purchase for residential purpose, investment in local Malaysian companies as inactive partner, invest in the local share market, education for children in Malaysia and medical purposes.

The participant is, however, required to maintain a minimum balance of RM 60,000 from second year onward and throughout stay in Malaysia under this programme.

‘‘Our target for this programme, will be selective high potential states of India, which as per our internal study, has Punjab at the top. This programme does not allow participants to work, but, still makes them part of the growing Malaysian economy and specifically the real estate sector,’’ he said.

Each participant is allowed to purchase up to two units of residential houses at a minimum price of above RM 150,000 each, except for certain states like Johor, Malacca, Penang (above RM 250,000), he said.

There must be very few countries where Indian citizens can enter without a visa. Apart from the special cases of Nepal and Bhutan, I can only think of Sri Lanka, Thailand and Malaysia(?) Any others?
Incidentally, back in the 1960s anyone with an Indian (or most other Commonwealth) passport could enter Britain without a visa.

Looks like they are suspending the program for those arriving from Chennai.
Malaysia Visa

Pretty dumb move. What's going to prevent those keen on overstaying from taking a flight from one of the other airports in India?
