Any news on Jet's (9W) getting permission to fly to USA ?
Permalink Closed

Does anyone have an update on the status of Jet Airway's application to fly to the US ?

Last I heard the US agency had referred it back to Indian authorities to provide information on the background of Jet Airways ? Did the Indian authorities respond ? Any clue when Jet might get the approval ?

Not much is available bro except the funding pattern of the organisation is in question. Thought a green chit by the indian authorities have been issued. But seriously its been more than a year i guess since 9W has applied for a permission to US. And it looks something is really fishy...

i think jet airways is fighting a case in the US because some company accused that the airline was being funded by underworld people soo the idea of giving them permission was on hold until the truth was out i think which it still isnt.

Jet Airways hits Al Qaeda net on US runway
Jet Airways Inc, a registered airliner based in Bethesda, Maryland, put up a hurdle to Jet’s ambitious US foray by dragging an Al Qaeda, Dawood connection to the Indian private carrier.

BY OUR AVIATION CORRESPONDENT

4 June, 2005: India’s private airline carrier Jet Airways has run over an unexpected hurdle which it encountered in US terrain: A namesake.

Jet Airways Inc, a registered airliner based in Bethesda, Maryland, put up a hurdle to Jet’s ambitious US foray by dragging an Al Qaeda, Dawood connection to the Indian private carrier. It wanted the Indian Jet to be barred from flying to US.

In a complaint filed to the US Department of Transport on May 23, the Delaware-based Jet said permitting Jet would endanger US national security as the Indian carrier “had Al Qaeda” links.

The US Jet’s complaints, filed on May 23, 21 days after Jet filed its application,
were based on some unconfirmed media reports in India. Jet Airways Inc said its Indian namesake was funded by underworld don Dawood Ibrahim, since it was launched in 1991. Gangster Dawood Ibrahim is in UN’s most wanted list of individuals having links with Al Qaeda, founded by terror mastermind Osama bin laden.

The US Jet’s complaints were as wild and unsubstantiated as the media reports it were based. Sample this: “"Secretary (Department of Transportaion) Mineta would never welcome Jet Airways (India) if he was made aware of Naresh Goyal (Chairman of Jet Airways, India0 and Dawood Ibrahim's plan to inflict real and imminent danger on the United States."

Jet (India) slammed the allegations as “sensational, unsupported and offensive but also scurrilous”. In its reply filed last month, Jet India said the complaint has “ falsely accused the Jet Airways of being an "Al-Qaeda airline" and has otherwise attempted to besmirch the reputation of the company and its chairman"

Jet India said in its reply that all aircraft acquisitions and operations have been financed through internationally accredited multilateral institutions and banks including the Export Import bank of US, International Finance Corporation and other reputed banks and FIIS.

The US Jet, which does not even have an aircraft in its possession, didn’t seem to have much takers among US authorities. Jet Airways India has a fleet of 42 aircraft.
It was also the lone objection raised against Jet India’s plans.

The Port Authority of Newark has rubbished the US jets claim. It has supported the Indian Jet’s entry with the US Department of Transport. Jet has selected Newark as its first destination in US for its Mumbai-US flight.

The complaint against the Indian airliner comes as the US Department of Transport
gives 21 days for other parties to raise objections on any new entrant. Media reports say the US Jet was more concerned about the trade name Jet and that the Al Qaeda-Dawood link was just a ruse to stir up anti-terror passions in the US a bid to block the Indian airline’s entry.

The Indian Jet has apparently employed a battery of lawyers to tackle the issue.
The issue is now with the US Homeland Security.

Jet Airways India had come out with a hugely successful Initial Public Offering recently, which was oversubscribed 12 times. This was the first IPO by an airline company in India.

Mates,

was reading ET when came across the fact that Jet has renamed Air Sahara as Transjet. Incase they dont get permission to fly to US. They will be using Transjet to apply for US operations. But seriously if 9W doesnt get the permission it will be a big blow to them.

Jet Airways set for US landing?

Will be the first domestic private carrier to fly India-US

June 08, 2006 Financial Express

MUMBAI, JUNE 7:  India’s largest private sector carrier Jet Airways is likely to get a security clearance from the ministries of home affairs and civil aviation to fly its 100% subsidiary Air Sahara directly to the US, making it the first domestic private carrier to fly India-US. The official ratification is expected in the next two days, according to sources.
An Air Sahara Boeing 767 is currently in the Jet Airways hangar in Mumbai for repainting and refurbishment, before it takes off for the US. The entire process of getting the aircraft ready for the trip will take 15 days.

Interestingly, the aircraft will also carry the logo of primary carrier Jet Airways, whose application for permission to fly to the US has been held up on security grounds.

When contacted by FE, Jet Airways denied there was any such development. Jet Airways executive director Saroj Datta said, “The carrier will be used for wet lease and not for US operations.”

Last year in June, Jet Airways had plans to fly to Newark in the US via Brussels. But the plans were scuttled when a Maryland-based company, also named Jet Airways Inc, filed a complaint with US authorities against the Indian company, alleging trademark infringement. Jet Airways was also denied a security clearance for entering the US.

Westward ho!
• Jet Airways likely to get security clearance within 2 days
• 100% subsidiary Air Sahara to operate direct flights to US
• Air Sahara’s Boeing 767 will be deployed on the India-US route

Air Sahara, meanwhile, entered into a code-sharing agreement with American Airlines in November 2005. Jet Airways currently operates one flight each from Delhi and Mumbai to the UK and one each from Mumbai and Chennai to Singapore.

The carrier also operates a daily flight between Chennai-Colombo-Chennai and Delhi-Kathmandu-Delhi.

I doubt it would be a non-stop flight as they are planning to use Boeing 767s.

For those who dont know as to whats shady about Jet Airways. Here is a nice ET article which shows a bit of a light. Mr N Goyal doesnt seem to have a cleareance from IB thats why he hasnt be approved by Home Ministry to Join the board of Air Sahara.

The US goverment has asked india to clarify the background of Jet promoter before giving a formal approval to US flights.

Now the problem is not much is known about the funding pattern of the airline at Tailwinds Jet,s holding company. It is registered in Isle of Mann. And the whole airline is being run through a SPV or a special purpose vehicle in which whole money is invested.

Countries like Isle of Mann and Cayman islands act as nice heavens for shady business and place for converting your unaccountable money or black money as we call it to legalised one thanks to the investment u make as there is no extradition treaty in place

The london fixation of Jet continues. 9W now launching flights from ATQ-LHR 6 days a week.

I wonder why fly the plane empty from DEL/BOM to ATQ why not make it a milk in all possibility it will be the B767 which will be used.

Now that Naresh Goyal has got security clearance to join the Air Sahara board (the deal is still hanging in the air), according to CNN-IBN Late Night report (June 20, 2006, 11.15 pm), does this mean clearance by the U.S. also?

Or is it still a separate procedure?

The Indian Home Ministry will pass the move and not oppose clearance to Goyal, according to CNN-IBN.

Jet wants renegotiation of price: Sahara
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

http://www.ndtv.com/topstories/showtopstory.asp?slug=Jet+wants+renegotiation+of+price%3A+Sahara&id=19665
NDTV Correspondent

Tuesday, June 20, 2006 (New Delhi):

Just ahead of Wednesday night's deadline of three months within which the merger was to be completed, the Jet-Sahara deal looks like it may be over for all practical purposes.

Jet Airways has demanded a renegotiating in the price of the deal.

Jet also wants a 10-20 per cent cut in the value of the deal. Sahara has denied the possibility of a renegotiation and has offered to extend the deadline by 15 days.

NDTV has learnt that Jet is looking at legal options to block the transfer of Rs 500 crore as advance money to Sahara. As per the agreement, the money will go to Sahara and that's what Jet is trying to prevent.

Jet Airways Chairman Naresh Goyal in his conversation with Subroto Roy on June 10 gave enough hints to say that he is no longer interested in the deal.

Loss making airline

Jet is clear that in a falling market, its own valuation has fallen by 40 per cent then why should it pay more than Rs 2300 crore for a loss making airline.

Jet's stand that it will not take over the airline if security clearances for its Chief do not come through might also add to its problems. Through out Tuesday, there were meetings at the Home Ministry concerning the Jet deal.

NDTV has learnt that the Home Ministry is all set to give a go ahead to Naresh Goyal to come on the board of the new airline. Incidentally, the Home Ministry had cleared Goyal to be on Jet's board in 2004.

Jet over the last few months has realised that Sahara, with its slipping market share, may not be worth its while.

With increasing competition Goyal is worried about his own expansion plan rather than taking the burden of a bleeding airline.

The deal was signed about six months ago and is worth Rs 2,300 crore.

Jet planning India-China-US flights by next year

Latest update!!

www.uninews.com

Jet planning India-China-US flights by next year
Mumbai, Aug 8 (UNI) India’s largest private carrier Jet Airways plans to launch services ahead of the 2008 Olympics to China, from where it plans to fly to the US next year.
‘‘We are planning to connect Mumbai and Delhi to Shanghai and Beijing and from there to different US destinations. We hope to commence these operations next year,’’ Jet Airways Chairman Naresh Goyal told PTI here.
Once operational, Jet would be the second Indian carrier after Air-India to offer services to the eastern neighbour.
While the airline can fly directly to China, it is yet to get landing rights in the US. The Jet Chief expressed confidence that the airline would get clearance from the US Civil Aviation Authorities within a year.
Jet’s plans to fly to the Big Apple came crashing down in 2005 when a US namesake alleged that the Indian carrier had links with terror groups and wanted it to be barred from flying to US.
On operations to China, a top Jet Airways official said: ‘‘We are not just looking at the Olympic boom. It will not last... What we are really looking at is to tap the large business travellers especially software professionals flying between India, US and China’’.
The airline is also planning a slew of direct flights to various European destnations this year and next year.
‘‘Europe is emerging as a big travel destination. By this year end, we will have flights to Zurich, and some more destinations,’’ Goyal said.
