DELHI AIRPORT UPDATES

As the DIAL (Delhi International Airport Limited) and MIAL (Mumbai International Airport Limited) start their work and gather steam in designing the master plan for the new airports. Various questions are crisscrossing through my mind..

Is Fraport a better airport operater than ACSA?

Does that mean there would be vast difference in the quality of work executed at both airports. will a technically superior airport operater give a particular airport an edge over another?

Here is a press statement concerning DIAL issued recently. The architects who would be handling the new construction seems to be pretty hify

 http://www.hok.com/

NEW DELHI, MAY 10: The GMR-Fraport consortium has appointed Mott MacDonald Group as the leading technical advisor for modernising Delhi airport at a cost of Rs 60 crore. Mott MacDonald has, in turn, appointed leading global architect HOK International, to design the airport.

According to civil aviation ministry sources, the consultant would be required to submit a master development plan to the Airports Authority of India (AAI) within six months.

The sources also said that once the master plan is devised by September, it has to be approved by AAI before being implemented. GMR had on May 3 taken over the management of the Delhi airport from AAI.

Mott MacDonald, the UK-based consulting firm, is one of the top five management, engineering and development consultants in the world.

Sources in GMR said HOK has in the last five years handled 50 airport construction projects worth $20 billion. They said Mott MacDonald would also help GMR float the tender inviting civil construction companies to bid for building the new airport.

The sources said Mott MacDonald has already mobilised 40 technical personnel specifically for the airport project and is likely to bring in 80-100 more in the next couple of weeks.

AAI holds a 26% in the joint venture company—Delhi International Airport Limited. The consortium, comprising GMR group, Fraport, Malaysia Airports and India Development Fund, owns 74% stake in the JV

personally I don't think it'd make that much a difference. And certainly one is not going to become airlines favourite at the expense of the other. Both cities have their identity.

Haha Dnt worry they wont do that you are just expressing your opinion. Anyways guys here is a new update. The Centuar Hotel near the Airport would have to be relocated as it would come under the path of new taxi track. The article also talks about hotel doing good business i wonder what kind of people put up there. Personally i prefer Raddisson and thats near the airport too.

With the proposed modernisation of Delhi airport moving at a fast pace,

a question mark hangs over the future of the Centaur hotel at the

airport. Official sources told Business Line that the promoters of the

new airport had written to Air India pointing out that the existing hotel could come in the way of the proposed taxi track that is to come up as part of the future expansion of the airport.

In view of this development, AI has sought more details including the timeframe during which the proposed taxi track would come up and has

put on hold its plans of giving out the property on a long-term management contract.

The airline management was looking at giving out the hotel on lease

for at least 30 years.

"If the hotel falls in front of the proposed taxi track, then it may have to relocated to another site. If that were to happen, what sense does it

make for us to enter the market now and look for a party who would

like to take the hotel on a long-term management basis?" senior AI officials asked.

Meanwhile, the Centaur hotel continues to do brisk business.

"The hotel has been reporting a high occupancy rate and is now a self-sustaining unit," a senior AI official said.

What do they mean by relocation? Is there a need to build another one once it is pulled down.  As Vabby pointed out, one very much doubts that place is doing any meaningful business. You rarely see much activity over there and curtains are drawn most of the time.  Maybe they are saying to justify building another one nearby.

Correctly said Asseem. Infact these hotels act as good places or venues for one night stands. I wonder how many people come in stay in Centuar for days rather than just a couple of hours.. Anyways not deviating from the topic. a New update in regards to DIAL

Saturday, 20 May , 2006

New Delhi: A new low-cost terminal, airport staff trained by the Taj group of hotels in house-keeping duties, a more efficient air traffic control system that cuts down on flight delays and a world-class experience with huge amount of duty-free shopping area would soon await passengers using the Delhi airport.

This and more could become a possibility with the GMR-led consortium mandated to modernise Delhi having hired a host of international consultants to assist in the project implementation. The promoters are said to be keen that the proposed airport be noted among the "best of the class" airport in the region.

Consultancy services

While an HR firm, Growtalent, will soon start talking individually and collectively to all the 2,400 employees of the Airports Authority of India (AAI) to chalk out their career progression plan, plans are also afoot to send certain sections of AAI staff to some key airports globally to sensitise them to working of their counterparts.

Besides, the UK-based Mott MacDonald has been hired as the lead technical advisor to the project and three companies including National Air Traffic Services of UK, Airservices Australia and German ATC are in the race for providing consultancy services to improve the efficiency of air traffic controller.

Other facilities

Also on the anvil are not only a combined international and domestic terminal but also a parallel runway. Both the facilities are likely to be ready well before Delhi hosts the Commonwealth Games in 2010.

Work is also expected to start soon on refurbishing Terminal IB, which is currently used as the domestic departure terminal for most private airlines.

While a clearer picture on the physical contours of the new airport would emerge after the plans are frozen with the Government in the next six months, the promoters have made a start by improving areas where passengers come into direct contact with the facilities at the airport.

Time will tell the tales of horror. But continuing with the update in regard to DIAL activities. The plan put up by IIT Delhi 2 years back to streamline the traffic at DEL Airport seems to have been put on fast track by the GMR-Fraport Consortium. Here is the press release below

New Delhi, May 29: ABOUT two years back, the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Delhi, prepared a plan to regulate traffic in and around both the domestic and international airports. But it hardly took off. Now, GMR-Fraport, the private company mordernising the airport, is reviving that plan.

‘‘GMR wants us to update the plan and also incorporate other features as per their requirements and assessments,’’ said Dr Geetam Tewari, professor, Traffic Research and Injury Prevention Programme (TRIPP), IIT Delhi.

According to Tewari, the revision of the plan, originally framed for the Airports Authority of India (AAI), will take another two or three weeks. Once it is ready, GMR-Fraport plans to implement it on a fast-track basis.

‘‘GMR’s main focus is to improve parking facilities, besides re-routing arrival and departure traffic. They also want us to improve plans for a long-term parking facility, keeping in mind the traffic volume expected by 2010,’’ said Tewari.

At present, the Delhi airport gets about 10 million passengers annually. This figure is estimated to increase to 35 million by 2010.

Meanwhile, GMR has also sought the help of the traffic police to control taxis and autorickshaws around the airport, besides managing the pre-paid booth area.

‘‘We have had a couple of meetings with GMR officials on the issue,’’ said P C Hota, DCP Traffic, Southern range. ‘‘GMR also wants spacious entry and exit areas, and space to be earmarked for buses,’’ he added.

The pre-paid taxi stand at Terminal 1-B of the domestic airport will be shifted. About 250 taxis that operate from here will be parked in a plot at nearby Mehramnagar, owned by the Airports Authority of India.

The space that will be freed opposite the terminal will be used for parking private cars.

What GMR wants
* Improved parking facilities
* No traffic snarls at entry and exit points
* Earmarked space for buses
* Clear overcrowding by taxis, autorickshaws
* Streamline pre-paid system to make it passenger friendly

What TRIPP-IIT plans
* Separate lanes, pull-in bays and parking lots for private cars, taxis, buses and three-wheelers
* Electronic sensors to monitor waiting time of taxis in the drop-off area of the departure wing
* Luggage trolleys at convenient locations
* Regulate access and speed of all traffic
* Improved lighting, drainage
* Clear signs and information systems
* Clearly-defined spaces around dormitories, toilets, canteens, kiosks etc.
* Remove the bottlenecks around the ‘‘meet-and-greet’’ points, lounges, entrances and exits
* All paths and ramps to have trolley and wheelchair-friendly gradients

Another update in regard to mapping of the new terminals. This is being done right behind the Centuar Hotel. I guess Centuar will have to be closed if it comes in way of taxi tracks or aprons.. wow so we will have 3 runways now.

Surveyors are busy mapping the empty stretch behind the Centaur Hotel along NH 8 - the site where Delhi Airport's two new terminals will be constructed in time for the Commonwealth Games 2010.

The two terminals - one domestic and the other international - are part of the modernisation plan submitted to the Ministry of Civil Aviation by the GMR group led consortium. As per this plan, a simultaneous runway will be in place by mid 2007. This Airbus A380 compatible runway will be in addition to the two runways operational at present.

Think positively dude and u will sure see something gud. Delhi metro and now mumbai metro and banglore metro are clear examples that things are possible in india also... further guys plz do comment as to whether u like the thread usefull ...

Guy keeping this thread pumped up.. One more update from next month u will find Escorts from AHA and Frankfinn Institute helping u out with troubles in xray, check inn... A firm plan with GMR is in place here....

ROUND THE CLOCK : TEAM COMPRISING STUDENTS AND TRAINEES FROM HOSPITALITY INDUSTRY WILL HELP PASSENGERS FIND WAY AROUND AIRPORT

New Delhi, May 30: CONFUSION is the prevailing sentiment for a first-time visitor to the Indira Gandhi International airport. Almost a month after the GMR-Fraport consortium took over the Delhi airport, it has figured that one out and has a plan ready to roll from next month.

The airport will soon have a team of ushers working round-the-clock to escort and help out passengers.

They will mostly be students and trainees from the hospitality industry. The team will assist passengers at the terminal and guide them through the procedure of checking in, undergoing security checks, and verification.

‘‘There is a large number of first time visitors to the international airport, many are even uneducated or are from rural areas. They get completely disoriented at the terminal and are unable to understand how the whole process of checking, baggage checks works. Presence of ushers at the terminals will help address the problem,’’ said an official at the Indira Gandhi International Airport.

‘‘We have already selected two institutes to help us implement the plan. While the first batch of around 25 ushers will come from Frankfinn Management Consultants, the next will be from the Air Hostess Academy. The ushers will work through three shifts round-the-clock and will be paid a stipend. Identity verification of the candidates is under process in view of the high security concerns but the first batch will start operating very shortly,’’ said the official.

The Air Hostess Academy (AHA) confirmed that the plan was on.

‘‘Eighteen of our students will start working as ushers at the international terminal next month onwards. We will continue to send batches for this training at the airport,” said the spokesperson from the Air Hostess Academy.

GMR-Fraport had outlined a 100-day improvement plan after taking over the airport.

Employing ushers is one of the many targets listed by the consortium and is one of the many moves planned to create a ‘passenger-friendly’ identity for the airport.

At your service
* Ushers to escort and guide passengers at the Indira Gandhi International airport from next month
* AHA and Frankfinn Management Consultants to send first two batches
* Team will work round-the-clock to assist passengers at the terminal and guide them through the process of checking in, security checks and verification

Speaking of the Metros, there is a plan to link the first line of the Mumbai Metro (Versova-Ghatkopar) directly to the International Terminal at BOM. This was in the news a couple of days ago; can't find the link now. This would enable passengers alighting at the airport to directly board the Metro instead of haggling with cabbies.

DIAL UPDATES GMR FRAPORT GOING FULL STEAM
Permalink Closed

Its seems GMR-Fraport consortium has decided to eradicate the tout problem at the DEL Airport. Before the construction starts for the new terminal for which survey work is being executed behind the Centuar Hotel a couple of short term measures are being executed by the group. It includes renovation of toilets in terminal 1A & 1B and arrival louge. The press statement also talks aboutthe new traffic handling system thanks to IIT Delhi

GMR-Fraport takes over parallel charge of IGI Airport; renovation of canteen, toilets underway

Anubhuti Vishnoi
New Delhi, June 3: THE GMR-Fraport led consortium today took over parallel control of the Indira Gandhi International Airport. All decisions related to the airport will be taken only after a joint discussion between the Airport Authority of India (AAI) and the GMR group officials.

Though GMR-Fraport had formally assumed charge of the airport administration a month ago, the AAI was managing and operating it.

Officials say a complete takeover is likely in July.

Soon after assuming charge in May, GMR had outlined its early targets. Newsline takes a look at what has been achieved and what is on its way.

Senitation
Sanitation and Cleanliness are at the top of GMR’s must-do list. They have even got down to working on it. Renovation has already started at two toilet complexes each at Terminal 1A and 1B and another one at the Arrival lounge. The entire flooring in the complexes is being redone.

Traffic
Having fast-tracked IIT Delhi’s plan to decongest the airport approach roads, GMR is hoping to ensure smooth traffic flow in the area in the coming two months.

The prepaid taxi parking opposite terminal 1B is also set to be shifted to AAI land in Mehramnagar.

This will provide additional parking space for 250 vehicles and also help address another early target outlined by GMR: doing away with touts.

The move will also address security concerns voiced by airport officials.employee benefits

Work is on to renovate the staff canteen which senior AAI officials admit ‘‘was quite disappointing’’ earlier. The canteen will have swanky interiors and a new catering agency is to be appointed. It will be air-conditioned and ready to operate by July-end, said senior airport officials.

Help kiosks and ushers
To make the airport more passenger-friendly, GMR-Fraport is going to sprinkle a few help desks at the terminals, some are already in place.

In addition, there will be well-informed ushers, fresh out of hospitality institutes, to guide first-time visitors and those who find the international terminal confusing. The first batch will be posted at the airport from this month.

On the anvil
* Improved trolley management
* Crackdown on touts
* Improved Queue system
* Streamlining taxi and autorickshaw movement
* Increasing frequency of shuttle service between the domestic and international terminal for bonafide passengers
* Improving air-conditioning and lighting facilities
* Optimal use of X-ray machines

Airport modernisation first phase to be over by 2010

Staff Reporter

Work to be completed well before the Commonwealth Games

NEW DELHI: The Phase I modernisation of Delhi airport will be completed by March 2010, well before the Commonwealth Games, GMR Group officials informed during an interaction here with the Confederation of Indian Industry (CII) Delhi State Council on Monday.

GMR Infrastructure Limited General Manager P. Pannicker said the master plan for the airport would be completed by September this year and by January 2007 construction would start.

Pointing out that passenger traffic at present was 16.2 million and was expected to grow at 15 per cent over the next five years, Mr. Pannicker said Phase I of the project on completion would have one integrated terminal catering to about 30 to 35 million passengers.

During his interaction with CII Delhi State Council, Mr. Pannicker said GMR had set some early success targets that would be finished within four months from now. These include terminal 1 B's facelift, toilet renovation, improving housekeeping standards and seating arrangements.

Earlier, CII Delhi State Council Chairman Ankur Bhatia said restructuring and modernisation of the airport would add to the economic growth tremendously and have a wider implication for the aviation sector in general for the country.

Congratulating GMR for its comprehensive planning and preparation, CII Delhi State Council Vice-Chairman Kartikeya Bharat Ram said the airport was the real show window of the entire country as it left a lasting impression on people visiting here. "Though people get a wrong impression at present, GMR's work would certainly go a long way in creating a positive impact about Delhi and the country as a whole," he added.

Airlines to have separate terminals at Delhi’s new airport

Airlines to have separate terminals at Delhi’s new airport

New Delhi, June 28

The process of modernising and upgrading Delhi’s IGI airport to world-class standards is gathering pace.
By 2008 when the first phase is over, there will be a separate space for each airline. And by 2010 when the second phase closes, each carrier will have a separate terminal building like in most developed countries.
This means when you drive up to the airport, you’ll have to tell the cabwallah which airline you are going to use so that he takes you to the right terminal.
The government is keen to complete revamping of the IGI airport by March 2010, well before the Commonwealth Games.
At present, congested waiting areas, lack of comfortable seating, slow baggage handling and unreliable power supplies rank Delhi airport as one of the worst by several international standards.
The Bangalore-based GMR group is the leading group of companies which are modernising the national capital’s airport.
Officials say existing structures at domestic and international terminals will be pulled down and replaced with new modular-designed buildings.

                                                                      ***
Civil aviation minister Praful Patel was given a presentation by GMR officials yesterday on the progress made so far. He reportedly told them to make speedy and visible improvements.
Company officials say the masterplan for new airport will be complete by September and construction will start by January 2007.
The current passenger traffic is 16.2 million per year which is expected to grow at 15 per cent over the next five years.
After the first phase of project is over, the airport will have one integrated terminal catering to about 30 to 35 million passengers.
The new runways with wide shoulders will be able to accommodate double-decker superjumbos like the Airbus A380 which can seat 800 passengers and long-range aircraft Boeing 777s which can fly non-stop from and to anywhere in the world.
The GMR has set some early success targets that will be finished within four months from now. This includes facelift of terminal 1B (domestic), toilet renovation, improving housekeeping standards and seating arrangements.
Officials at the civil aviation ministry said the restructuring and modernisation of Delhi airport will add to economic growth tremendously and will have a wider implication on the aviation sector in general.
The GMR-Fraport consortium holds 74 per cent equity in the newly-formed joint venture company, the remaining 26 per cent being with the Airports Authority of India (AAI) and other government institutions.
Assets of Delhi airport have been transferred to the GMR combine and leased for 30 years after which the lease will be renewed for another 30 years. The government will continue to manage security as well as air traffic control.
