Interesting/Challenges airport approaches you have flown into
Permalink Closed

What are the most interesting/challenging airport approaches you have flown into ?

For me, there are two

1) Approach to KTM (Kathmandu)

2) Canarasie approach 13R into JFK.

I love the way pilots jockey a 747 size plane in at sharp angles..one AI flight I was on, made a real rough landing..it was bad weather too..and braked so hard that various passenger artifacts rolled all the way down the aisle..everyone looked around and shook their heads, dazed.

What about others ?

Kaitak would have been my favorite-had I visited HKG anytime (before 1998 that is).

Interesting to note that while Kaitak was around, any city lights in the Kaitak area HAD to be steady..only the Approach Lights into Kaitak were of the flashing types. And of course the checkerboard.

There are several vids out on Kaitak crosswind landings..

Brother lived at Tok Wa Wan Dow in Kowloon overlooking KaiTak in the 90s. My first trip abroad on receiving my virgin passport in 1991  was to HKG, holiday at his place .

It was a breathtaking sight watching the CX/BA 747s to EU/LHR hurtling down the runway filled upto their gunners, with the wing tips literally scrapping the ground as they would groan for every inch of the runway. Every rotation at end of the runway was a celebration .............

You could see the landings between the bldgs at certain location in kowloon.

Well I dont know about hard approaches.

But for anyone who has ever flown into AKL will know that on a clear day it is one the most beautiful approaches in the world.

On a clear sunny day you can see the Pacific Ocean and the Tasman Sea together along with the whole city.

Another beautiful landing was at MCT, the lights in the city are very very bright and the city is easily one of the cleanest in the world. Infact one IC captain remarked to me once after flying into MCT, "SIN is now the 2nd cleanest city I have landed into."

Cheers

The one into Washington DC's Ronald Reagan is an interesting one to be in. All the zig-zagging that goes on as you approach the runway.
