Vickers Viscount of the oval windows fame.

Wasnt the DC-8 (cargo) also operated by AI for a very short period of time ? Or I may be wrong there.

As someone mentioned, Bombardier (CRJ200), and also wasnt the Tu154 operated by IC during the A320-grounding phase ?

Remember reading a news item on how the door of an Avro (Bae748) was blown off the hinges due to the engine start of a Tu154 at Chennai or someplace.

To answer an earlier question: i think ALL aircraft operated in the colors of an Indian carrier in commercial service, freight or passenger, would count.

To add to the list:

1. Puss Moth operated by Tata Airlines which inaugarated commercial service in India with a mail flight to Madras via Bellary.

2. 4 seat Miles Merlin which inaugarated the first true passenger service on BOM-TRV route operated by Tata Airlines.

3.14-seat Dragon Rapide DH86 (the first airplane to be equipped with a radio) and later DH89, operated by Tata Airlines and Air Deccan (Hyderabad).

4. Vickers Armstrong "Atlanta" (possibly the UGLIEST airplane ever) operated by Imperial Airways on Karachi-Jodhpur-Bhopal-Calcutta-Rangoon route.

5. DC2 - First giant airliner in Indian skies: operated by Tata Airlines on their prestigious routes to Basra via-Karachi.

6. DC3 - This bird dominated the domestic scene till the end of the 50's with all airlines operating this model. Tata Airlines, Kalinga Airlines, Trans Bharat, Bharat Airways, Air Deccan etc. Indian Airlines acquired over 94 of these aircraft on inception!! IC Dakotas were in 2 different configurations: with 21 and 28 seats obviously with different seat pitch! From what I have heard, A DC3 would make money with just 8 of the 21/28 seats sold. And this was a time when the Pune-Mumbai flight cost Rs.22 and Pune-Delhi a princely sum of Rs.173! No modern aircraft can quite match these economics! Which meant that this aircraft allowed the carrier to operate to every nook-and-corner of this country including stations like Nanded, Akola and Cuddapah which are no more on the air-map!!

7. DC4 - a total of 4 were acquired from Bharat Airways (Birla Group) and used by IC on metro routes from CCU which was then the busiest airport in the country.

8. Vickers Viscount 768 - First turboprop in Indian skies. Used by IC to replace the DC4's. IC's first intl service operated by this aircraft (Chennai-Colombo???).

9. Fokker F27 - Inducted when delay in the Indian built HS748 became clear. Became the workhorse for the North East routes. Replaced as the HS748's started production at Kanpur, these Fokkers went on to form the basis of the Indian Coast Guard Aviation performing low-level coastal patrol duty for over a decade until the Dornier 228 took over.

10. HS748 - First Indian built airliner, based on license from Hawker Siddley. Operated by Indian Airlines, Pushpak Aviation and later Vayudoot.

11. Caravelle - First jet on domestic flights. Though rather slow by modern standards, induction of this 90-seater into the IC fleet shaved an hour off all the metro-routes. IC turned profitable with the induction of this aircraft simply because of better utilization. However this jet was grossly misused and abused while at IC which meant that a lot of them were simply disposed off as scrap once the 737's arrived. Atleast 2 of them if not more ended up in executive charter service with Pushkar Aviation and a Bangalore based company.

12.Airbus A300B2/B4 - IC initially ordered 7 of these jets for service on metro routes as traffic was exploding. The induction of this aircraft was a record in terms of time taken from inital evaluation to induction into service being less than a year!! IC eventually ordered 14 of these giants apart from leasing atleast 3 others from various sources. Being the only player in the skies before Jet and others spoled the game for them, IC operated these widebodies on routes which would seem strange today: like DEL-LKO, HYD-DEL (upto 4x daily), DEL-VNS-KTM and BOM-CCU-GAU. Even DEL-SXR was 3x daily AB3 service in tourist season!! Also operated by Air India.

13. 737-200 - Initial lot of 7 was quickly followed up with more orders through the eighties. IC eventually operated over 42 of these city-jets at the peak. There was atime these jets were operated with 131 seats at a tight 28" pitch! IC still has 11 of these operatingwith 119 seats config. The 737-200 also formed the basis for all "airtaxis" starting up in the 90's (with the exception of Jet): Continental, Damania, Skyline, East West (which had 14 of these 737's) etc.

SSBMAT: IC operated Tu-154's on wetlease from a CIS airline when militant IC pilots and cabin-crew went on a flash strike. The IC mgmt, backed by the govt decided that they wanted to break the back of the ICPA, then led by a pilot with political ambitions.

This caused some problems though as one Tu-154 operating on the MAA-DEL route crashed while landing at DEL apart from a string of  unforutnate accidents cuased by crew unfamiliar with local conditions.
