British Airways Summer 2007 India Update
Permalink Closed

British Airway's Summer of 2007 India plans:

DEL  downgraded from double daily B 744 which is flown currently to a double daily B 777-200ER nonstop from LHR and that is a big decrease in capacity

More over no more first class seats on DEL-LHR on one of the flights

Any reason why this big step as DEL-LHR route is always busy in all 4 classes

BOM also gets downgraded from the current double daily B 744 operation to a daily B 772ER + daily B 744.

MAA - 5 weekly B 772ER nonstop service

BLR  remains a DAILY B 772ER nonstop service and not downgraded in frequency.

CCU still remains a 3 weekly B 772ER service

Can any one in contact with BA officials  reason these big changes for india

World's longest jet to fly in Indian skies

Britain's second-largest long haul airline Virgin Atlantic Airways Tuesday announced the arrival of its maiden Airbus A340-600 flight - the world's longest commercial plane - into India.

New Delhi, Delhi, India, 2006-10-31 19:30:11

Britain's second-largest long haul airline Virgin Atlantic Airways Tuesday announced the arrival of its maiden Airbus A340-600 flight - the world's longest commercial plane - into India.

The A340-600 will operate on the Delhi-London sector.

'The A340-600 offers almost 30 percent more seats onboard compared to Virgin Atlantic's current aircraft. The return fares to London start at just Rs.20,000,' said Joe Thompson, country manager, Virgin Atlantic.

'Bringing the new Airbus A340-600 into India demonstrates our ongoing commitment to our Indian passengers and we are expecting that even more customers will get the chance to experience Virgin Atlantic,' he added.

Virgin Atlantic is the only airline operating the A340-600 in India. At 247-ft (75.3m) long, the A340-600 is longer than any other commercial plane. The aircraft is part of a $4.7 billion order for 25 aircraft, fitted with Rolls Royce Trent 500 engine series.

Virgin Atlantic currently operates 14 flights every week between India and Britain, with daily services to London from Delhi and Mumbai. The airline started its operation in the Indian subcontinent in June 2000. Since then it has emerged as a major competitive player in the Indian aviation space.

Virgin did a few (two, I think) flights with A-340-600 on the LHR-DEL route in the last few weeks, and then formally introduced the A-340-600 on the 31st of October'06 as mentioned in this thread.

And I was at DEL on the 31st, on an airport bus heading for a SpiceJet flight to PNQ, when G-VRED sailed past in its brand new grandeur, by the "long route" from International Terminal, taxiway, cross 28-10, through the domestic bays, and then for take-off on westerly direction from 27, into the afternoon smog.

Beats the old 343-300 that VS used to operate. I think I shall use VS on my next trip, I believe the PE configuration and seats have also been upgraded.

Maybe VS is taking away all the pax on LHR routes. Even BMI pulled out, 9W says it isn't earning and BA downgrades the aircrafts to India.

Seems Branson is leading the way.

a) Over a thousand pax a day who flew in and out of Delhi, are now using Amritsar, from/to UK.

b) Another few hundred who used UK as a transit airport, are working the non-stops from/to North America.

c) What to talk about BA dropping from 747 to 777, even the "authorities" who made big bucks hassling the passengers bound through Delhi to/from Punjab are scaling down.

d) Upper Class on VS is almost as good as First Class on BA. Club on BA, with half its seats facing the rear, is terrible when compared to Upper Class on VS, though they cost almost the same.

e) Most of all, a little bird told me about an upcoming link-up between an Indian LCC and Virgin Atlantic, so that's where the back-of-the-plane traffic will likely move to.

It is rather surprising that BA will not add flights to CCU.The thrice weekly is a joke as one can never get a confirmed seat on either outbound or inbound services.I think LH will be more aggressive.

Says who?  The BA configuration is wonderful, and only the most absurd individual would find a rear facing seat to be an issue.  In fact, the very last rear facing window seats in Zone B on the lower deck, and the rear facing seats on the upper deck by the exit are prime seats that are incredibly hard to get.  I have yet to find anyone who complains about a rear facing seat.
