Could this be true? Mischief at immigration

Caution: This report has to be verified. Just pasting an email a friend sent to a new

"Sir,

I have been a regular writer to the 'Letters to the Editor' for a number of years.

Recently, I have migrated to Canada and have received the following message from one of my friends. As the contents of the message would show,it is indeed quite disturbing if it were to be true. I sent a letter to you but it was not published. I can understand that as probably the policies that govern the column would not perhaps permit such a letter to be published.

I am sending this to you with the hope that you would find a way to highlight the contents through the columns of your esteemed newspaper if you would find it worthy of bringing to light a regular practice that is alledged to be adopted by personnel at lower level belonging to immigration and police to harass the NRIs returning from abroad with the diabolical intention that these are milch cows that could be coerced and blackmailed into submission to part with a part of their hard earned wealth. The long term ramifications of the same for the image of our beloved motherland is really hard to  imagine.

QUOTE MESSAGE

The following message has been sent to me on June from my cousin ------ who is working for Lufthansa in Frankfurt-Kindly do not take your eyes off the passport while stamping or elsewhere.
Truly,

                                                                  ***

Scary but true ...

This is a well organized conspiracy by Indian Immigration, Police, Customs and Air India staff with networking at all the Indian International Airports.

Be watchful when ever you give your passport to Immigration/Customs/Air India staff. The pass port can be easily tampered and can create trouble to you. They have found easy way of making money from NRIs. This is the way it works:

At the time of the passenger's departure, if the passenger is not looking at the officer while he is stamping the exit, the officer very cleverly tears away one of the page from the passport. When the passenger leaves the immigration counter, the case is reported on his computer terminal with full details. Now all over India they have got full details of the passenger with Red Flag flashing on the Passport number entered by the departure immigration officer. They have made their money by doing above.

On arrival next time, he is interrogated. Subject to the passenger's period of stay abroad, his income and standing etc., the price to get rid of the problem is settled by the Police and Immigration people. If someone argues, his future is spoiled because there are always some innocent fellows who think the honesty is the basis of getting justice in India.

Please advise every passenger to be careful at the airport.

Whenever they hand over the passport to the counters of Air India, or immigration or the customs, they must be vigilant, should not remove eyes from the passport even if the officer in front tries to divert their attention. Also, please pass this information to all friends, media men and important politicians.

Every month 20-30 cases are happening all over India to rob the NRIs the minute he lands. Similar case has happened with Aramco's --------

He was traveling with his family. They had six passports. They got the visa for USA and decided to go via Hyderabad from Jeddah. They reached Hyderabad. Stayed about a month a left for States. When they reached States, the page of the American visa on his wife's passport was missing. At the time of departure from Hyderabad, it was there. The whole family had to return to Hyderabad helplessly. On arrival at Bombay back, they were caught by the police and now it is over 2 months, they are running after the Police, Immigration officers and the Courts. On going in to details with him, he found out the following:

One cannot imagine, neither can believe, that the Indian Immigration dept. can play such a nasty game to harass the innocent passengers.

All the passengers traveling to & fro India via Bombay and Hyderabad must be aware of this conspiracy. Every month 15 to 20 cases are taking place, at each mentioned airport, of holding the passengers in the crime of tearing away the passport pages. On interviewing some of them, none of them was aware of what had happened. They don't know who, when and why tore away the page from the middle of the passport.

One can imagine the sufferings of such people at the hands of the immigration, police and the court procedures in India after that. The number of cases is increasing in the last 2-3 years.

People who are arriving at the immigration, they are questioned and their passports are being held and they have to go in interrogations.

Obviously, the conspiracy started about 2 to 3 years ago, now the results are coming in.

Some of the Air India counter staff too is involved in this conspiracy.

Be Aware Of It. And pass this on to all your Indian friends living abroad."

A friend of mine wanted to go to Nepal. Ex Delhi.

He is a Mumbaite. He took the Go Air flight and then was booked for the Indian to Kathmandu.

Whilst booking neither did Go Air nor did Indian tell him anything about his passport or his election card. They only told him that a photo ID was necessary.

Their flight to Delhi was fine, but Delhi Airport was an ordeal for them.

When IC boarding for Kathmandu was announced, these people reached immigration and were in for a surprise.

The immigration officials told them that without their passports or their election ids they would not be allowed further.

To this, my friend and his colleague suggested that they were having a valid photo id which was the driving licence and the pan card which was issued by the Govt of India.

The immigration did not help them instead an officer suggested that if a bribe of 1000 each was given then they could consider.

My friend was not only astonished but wanted to get to the bottom of this and went to the superior to complain and then the ordeal began.

He ran from pillar to post and was directed to the APD, then to the Airport Grievance Officer, then to the Airport Manager and then finally when he lost it...........he barged into the office of the Chief Immigration Officer.

The CIO was not only rude to him, but also suggested that my friend not waste his time. This CIO was baldie and wore glasses. My friend explained that he would file charges of harrassment and bribery to which the CIO asked my friend to get out of his office.

Needless to say that my friend was not allowed, but he came back to Bombay and then did file an RTI. Now let us see what happens......

The incident happened on August 27th, 06.

And to top it the CIO even threatened my friend of dire consequences if he took that incident any further.

Needless to say, my friend here a SARDARJEE just needed that kick of dire consequences and he took to his head and said, come what may, i shall get to the bottom of this.

What i heard about 30 minutes back was that people from Go Air called him, people from Indian called him and even the Immigration Office has summoned him to clarify their situations.

Man RTI rocks

But then immigration or customs is not at fault that your friend didnt know that for going to nepal u need a passport or a voter id card only. Its the travel agents thru which he got the tickets booked who didnt inform him about the same why is the gentlemen pointing a finger at others when its his own fault.

we all know its easy to botch a driving license, pan card and a ration card while the same cant be done for Voter card or passport where a proper intelligence verfication is done .

My friend did not go thru a travel agent..He went to the airlines office directly and they guided him. The at that point of time did not mention that they needed any other proof apart from the drivers id.

Also, in India everything can be botched. Passports from Lucknow and Uttar Pradesh often find way into the pockets of ppl who engage themselves into nefarious activities. The biggest one was the MEA launching a nation wide campaign to cleanse and only after the cleanse it was discovered that Abu Salem got a ppt w/o verification. (Im not sure he got his drivers id like that, or does he even need to drive).

No hard feelings man....
