One Liners
Permalink Closed

hi folks

Have been noticing that quite a few posts are just one liners, and don't quite add value to the forum.  I would strongly urge members not to post "me too" kind of messages as they contribute nothing to the forum.  Such post are alright only if they ask a relevent/critical question.

Once this message is widely read, I shall start deleting such new unnecessary posts.

regards

Completely agree. I think now we're 10 days past your email, so we can start the pruning when appropriate.

Aseem - can I suggest we maintain a "sticky" thread on the usage policy, and keep adding links to the specific policies to that sticky thread. I'll add a master policy thread, and then you can review it and make it sticky.

I can already see this thread, and "new thread vs. existing thread" being 2 policies.

Hey Guys,

I agree few of us here are amateurs and are here because we enjoy it a lot and also learn from our more enlightened members. With that in mind sometimes trivial one liners are instinctive and adds to the general informal feel of the forum.

The creators of this site have obviously done a wonderful job to bring us all together, and I feel deleting posts however trivial they may be, will impede the same people from posting again. And thats not something we want right. And frankly I dont believe that the problem is so large that action needs to be really taken against it.

So perhaps the powers that be would like to reconsider the idea of deleting one liners.

I do not mean to offend anyone, and I do sincerely apologise if I have done so but I thought I should share my opinion, after all isnt that what a forum is meant for!

Cheers

Shub

Hi AKLDEL,

Thanks for your comments. However I feel that in the overall scheme of things, just posting "I agree" or "me too" does not add to the value of the forum, it brings it down. Because when someone else is browsing the forum with 10 posts where 5 are "me too" posts, the value of the thread is reduced.

Members are definitely encouraged to post replies, but they must include some something of value to the community - maybe some alternate view point that will spark a discussion, maybe some additional information to consolidate the current discussion.

"Me too" type of answers are of course welcome - but only in the context of a poll - where only multiple choice answer is allowed. But in the forums, they retract from the intrinsic value of a thread.

For instance, I could have just replied to your post with a "I don't agree". That would have added zero value. You could have just posted "We should allow one-liners". Once again - zero value.

Both of us have taken the pains to collect our thoughts and write a proper response, and I think it's fair to us to expect the same from everyone here.

folks!

we had earlier adopted a policy of discouraging one-liners, but we haven't been able to pay that much attention to it.  Recently, we have noticed that the quality of threads has been affected by such replies that don't take discussion any forward.

Please refrain from posting one-liners along the lines of "me too" and "I also feel the same" kind.  They are alright if they carry discussion forward, or give new direction/perspective.
