Lease will be for about a year with a clause that can terminate at 6 to 8 months!!!

A340s are most probably the older lot. The ones with the hair dryer engines. Don;t expect The 300E!! Leave that to 9W!!

Anyway, nice to see an A340 in possible AI's colours. Word is that AI bosses are wondering whether to have a white painted plane with just "Air India" writtten on it or go in for a full Air India colour scheme.

Did you guys notice the registration on the A340. It's VT-EFO, the registration of "Emperor Kanishka"

Actually in the start the AI Mgt had cleared 10 A340-500s but then Boeing couldn't swallow this.

Then later Boeing had talks with AI and 68 Boeings were decided for AI

Mate those were 10 A340-300Xs and 18 737-800s, not A340-500s [this was way back in 2001]

Here is the link from Airliners.net which confirms the selection of the A340-300 for the fleet and the dissapointment of the few Indian members at the time.

Dude there is a 100% chance in the media nonesense as usual... especially when it comes to AI and IC.

So better lets drop off this topic... we'll sue the media later on

As far as my reading is concerned i still remember it was A345 but could be a media messup...they might not be knowing the difference between the dash 300 and dash 500 series

Air-India to take 3 aircraft on dry lease
Mumbai, Nov. 12 (PTI): Air-India has signed a Letter of Intent with Montrose Global Capial LLC for dry lease of three aircraft as the state-run carrier plans to ramp up its operations for the busy summer season next year.

The LoI with Montrose is for dry lease of three Boeing 747-400 aircraft, a top airline official said.

The aircraft would join A-I fleet in February and March next year, he said.

Air-India has also decided to take one 767-300 ER aircraft on wet lease from Globespan Airways UK.

"This aircraft would be used on Mumbai-Delhi-Bangkok and Mumbai-Delhi-Kuala Lampur route," he said, adding the aircraft would start operations starting from November 22.

Further, the airline has decided to extend the term of two A 310-300 aircraft, which are on dry lease with it up to February and April next year.

Air-India to put up Boeing simulator at Mumbai facility

Mumbai, Nov 16 (UNI)

State-run carrier Air-India has entered into an agreement with Alteon Training, a subsidiary of US aircraft manufacturer Boeing, for putting up a Boeing 737 NG simulator at its Mumbai facility.

‘‘At Air-India, we are rapidly expanding our fleet to meet the increasing demands of air travel in India and we have been working closely with Alteon to identify and develop the most suitable training solutions for our new airplane orders,’’ AI General Manager (Training) T Manilal, said here today.

The new Boeing 73NG simulator is scheduled to arrive in Mumbai by the month-end and would be installed in Air-India operations building and certified by end of January. This would be followed by Boeing 777 simulator in November 2007 and Boeing 787 simulator in early 2008.

‘‘By providing solutions in Mumbai instead of having their pilots and crew travel to other training centres, Air India can save both money and time,’’ said Manilal.

Other Indian carriers flying 737 NG aircraft can also train their crew at very competitive prices at this facility in Mumbai, he added.

am I missing something here. don't B744s come factory fitted with winglets.  AFAIK they all have it, unless you are confusing them with B743s, which obviously don't.

looky VABBy, it's better to humbly accept error than to goof up again and again.  The trade mark of any B744 is its winglet, and thats what differentiates it from B743s.  "The" very first B747-400 rolled out with winglets, and to prove that point let me provide you with the link to oldest photo of B747-400 on A.net's database.
