Does anybody remember this Sahara Airlines crash in 1994?

Sahara India Airlines crash in 1994. Was in my 9th grade then and even remember discussing this with a classmate who was another aviation nut like me (he now writes articles for the Bharat Rakshak website).

This would appear to be the only fatal crash of private airlines in India in recent years-and that too it did not involve passengers.

Thrust assymetry, On a twin engine a/c, where if one engine losses power, the other engine has to increase power to compensate for loss of thrust. However this causes the aircraft to turn / bank, as you can imagine if some had to push only one of your both stretched out hands, its a unequal force. To compensate this the rudder is used to induce a drag and keep the aircraft straight and level.


This is part of the pilot training manouvers, the TRI manually reduces/shuts power during climb immediately after take-off. In this case due to application of wrong rudder pedals the aircraft, rather than create drag the opposite was experienced resulting in accelerated bank.


Most modern aircrafts have thrust assymetry computers on board that sense this condition and kick the APPROPRIATE rudder in.


Have they learnt fom this incident, the Mumbai accident last october, and a CRJ in GOI in january, sometimes i worry about the state of DGCA. As i mentioned in another post, we desperately need a regulator to put minimum requirements in place equalling or exceeding global standards.

What's the story of the CRJ at GOI, they finally put that a/c in a hangar. Saw it the other day when we landed in GOI, it looked like the landing gear went through some serious abuse, the corner block on the wing also seemed to be damaged, and the aircraft was smelling of fungus being in such a high humidity area.

Knowing the chindi chors ( scrap thieves ) that the SAHARA group is, they are probably trying to salvage every bit of serviceable or near serviceable spare off that a/c to be recycled through their stores. I am sure they have or the lessor have got the insurance payment for the a/c.


It was a case of heavy landing, i was in GOI on the next day on my way out of the country. The whole airport was crawling with SAHARA shris and shrimatis.

The other day I was driving around the Tarmac & noticed VT-SID lying in a sad state,minus NLG,with #2 Engine Windmilling.


Why dont S2 make an Attempt to Fix these Aircraft.

I am led to believe Mx and repair of the leased aircrafts were the main issue surrounding the collapse of 9W-S2 M&A. S2 is messing it up for all the domestic players.A similar situation prevailed during the early 90s aviation boom. It was Modi-luft and East-West that had defaulted causing some leasing co to fold up, subsequently many lease co refused to do business with airlines in India.


In a western country, S2 would have been slapped a huge parking fee with a possible ban till they had got rid of the aircraft, thanks to the apna AAI.

 If i am not wrong 9W,s 737 had also belly landed once though i guess their PR dept. played a fantastic role and were able to down play the incident in a nice way...

No Avijeet, that is not the only private passenger airline crash in India that has happened since the Open Skies policy came into effect. Here another fatal crash...

9Ws VT-JAL B737 on T/O roll pulled to the Right as #1 Engine Stalled.Some Mx work did not call for High power run & malfunctioned on T/O.The Aircraft went into soft mud & NLG Colloapsed.Its was a Small rectification unlike VT-SID.


Olly the Sahara story deals with the Alleged Faulty Rudder PCU story that has plagued the B737 for many years now.Although it cannot be pointed to it 100%.

I was told that VT-SID had been paid off for by the insurance co to the owner(ILFC), and the aircraft was now "condemned" and that ILFC is looking for someone to break the aircraft up and ship it out. From prelims of what i heard when it ran aground was that while it was a major damage it was well within the realm of repair. So WHY did this happen??? Any insights? Also, the avionics of the aircraft are on a nice display at the local sahara guys. Isn't it time some TV channel did a sting on these guys?
