I do not have any idea about the railway rates. The major road transport companies like Gati and Safex charge Rs. 8.00 per kg for bulk cargo on BLR-DEL. Local truckers charge even lower. It would be very difficult for a cargo airline to match those rates.

Aseem it seems you have the markets messed up a bit .... i think they primarily intend on the overseas freight market with short bursts of domestic stopovers... but given the fact that they have chosen the 777Fs is indicative of the long haul freight market.

Freight in India hasnt developed at all compared to the pax volumes but eventually the potential is massive. I would feel if it was more of the domestic sectors in mind... they would have probably settled on the small to medium capacity freighters.. picking up a lot of the old 737 conversions

Flyington inks $1 bn deal for four Boeing aircraft
Our Corporate Bureau / Mumbai July 20, 2006
Flyington Freighters, a cargo airline company promoted by Hyderabad-based Deccan group, is all set to launch international freighter services by the year-end.

For this, Flyington Freighters has signed $1 billion deal with Boeing to acquire four B-777 freighters.

The deal was signed at the Farnborough International Airshow in London.

These cargo aircraft, which is having a pay load of 103 tonne, will be delivered in 2009.

Flyington Freighters Managing Director Deepak Parasuraman said: "The company has placed firm orders for purchasing four Boeing frieghters for our international cargo operations."

Currently, there is Indian company operating cargo airline service to international destinations. Blue Dart Aviation is the only domestic player in cargo airline segment. Courier firm First Flight is also entering into industy with three aircraft from August.

Parasuraman said the company would acquire six MD-11 aircraft, which can be used for long range operations on wet lease from Boeing for initial operations.

"We will take the delivery of three leased freighters by end of this year to kickstart operations while remaining cargo airplanes will join us early next year," he said.

Flyington Freighters is planning to make Hyderabad as hub for its cargo operations.

"We will be operating to China, Far East, Hong Kong, Japan, Malaysia, West Asia, Los Angeles, New York and Europe," Parasuraman said.

The company is in talks with aircraft asset financing companies for arranging plane lease. Initial capital outlay is estimated at $50 million, which will be contributed by promoters. "There is no immediate plans for private equity placement to raise funds," he added.

There's definitely a huge market for international Cargo to/from India. Even BLR has many dedicated freighter flights - M11 from LH, 330 or 772 from EK, 747 from AF, 747 from SQ etc. - with a lot of them being daily flights.

I've been seeing the AF 747 Cargo at BLR for at least the past 10 years. It's a beauty and used to arrive around 2 pm on Tuesdays (this was 10 years ago, when my office had a clear view of the landing path on RWY 09).

International freight in India is booming however was always was good, most of the foreign airlines operating to India manage good revenue out of the belly. As a frequent SA ticket holder i have been bumped off many a times due to pay-load. This is on flights to ME, Europe and Hkg, well i am sure there is better statistical data available to back my point of robust freight growth out of India, this was ex of some soft data.

The chip factories of Hyd will fill these MD-11 & 777, smart move.

Well lets see if reliance can kick start the retail boom, you can then expect Kashmiri lychees in blr on your dinner table within 8hrs from plucking off the trees in gulmerg

with respect to the freight volumes i meant the domestic traffic for freight compared to capacity for the pax volumes... International market wise it was always at a high... been upteen number of times we have operated 744Fs and 747Fs to BOM to cope with the jump in payloads that couldnt be worked into the MD11 schedules and capacities..

same for SQs long standing demand of upping their cargo destinations and frequency... in addition to EKs ever persistent request for greater access for their freighter runs..

domestically though it surprised me that nobody picked up the cue and took on Blue Dart

Well SQ has it's wishes answered - the latest SIN-INDIA bilateral has completely opened up the market with no restrictions whatsoever. So SQ can now theoretically bring in 5 747Fs a day if they'd like to.

If they run with B777s they would be tough competition compared to the other small ones. But the Ground Network is the key.

Personally Something is not adding up.I have my doubts.

the rules applicable to the passenger segments may not necessarily be binding on the freight sector.... IMHO i dont think its applicable... so they can fly international from the outset..(?)

if thats the case then why not start off with Cargo and not go into Sauve passenger segment.

And now a hypothetical question! What if a newbie Cargo carrier after flying international, plans to fly passenger?  We he still have to wait for 5yrs?

I dont think rules might differ for that as it is the T7s wont come before 3yrs so maybe they might operate just one flight in domestic cargo.

No domestic, international only. Start off with MDs before the new birds arrive. No 5 years required for int'l freighter ops - however, no protection from international competition. No interest in pax flying. Either very smart and has found a nice niche which will avoid the internal pax airline slaughter to come in the next 12-18 months, or doomed to a very quick failure.
